This is a testament to how accessible this game is for blind/visually impaired contestants. His only accommodations were a Braille card containing the categories, an auditory signal for when the contestants could buzz in, no visual clues (which often happens in episodes without blind/visually impaired contestants as well), and a Braille keyboard to input his Final Jeopardy! response and wager.
What's even more impressive is how much he knows despite not being able to read as quickly or easily as a person with sight. Think about how much of what we know comes from reading, then imagine you couldn't see anymore. Eddie is truly one of the Jeopardy! greats.

Well, you also have to consider that he's had years to adapt. I haven't seen his episodes, but I wouldn't to be surprised if he were able to read faster than some people with sight.

Plus he's at a considerable disadvantage since he doesn't see the visual cue that the buzzer is activated, it wasnt until the ultimate T of C that they added the "ping" noise to help him.

@@chocolateangel8743 read up on jeopardy "buzzer theory". Basically once the clue is read, a tech flips a switch to turn the buzzers on, the contestant knows this by a light that comes on around the gameboard (you don't see this on the air). If you buzz too early it locks you out for a fraction of a second, buzz too late and your opponents could beat you to it. It's all about timing. Eddie never had the luxury of seeing the light so he was literally shooting blind (sorry for the lack of a better expression). When he came back for the ultimate T of C since the level of competition was tougher they added a "ping" noise that went off at the same time as the light to help him a little.

"Offered additional assistance but refused". Without a doubt one of the most impressive contestants ever on Jeopardy! I remember watching his run as a kid. I admired him so much then, and admire him even more now as an adult. These are the types of contestants we should be celebrating; those who overcame actual adversity without special treatment and those who aren't seeking some sideshow spectacle. We will not forget your Eddie! God bless!
Great contestant. Eddie was a big hit when the shows featuring him aired. Would love to see him back again.

Eddie is truly amazing! To play Jeopardy and win is phenomenal! He has not let his lack of sight hinder his activities or hold him back in any way!! His attitude toward life is something to be emulated! Blessings for him and his family! Eddie ☆☆☆☆Star of Jeopardy
I remember those days with amazement! Happy to see Eddie has gotten married and has a family! Congratulations Mr. Champion
I was 9 years old and when I first watched Eddie Timanus live in 2000, I didn't think he would have won a single game. ...Little did I know that guy became my favorite jeopardy contestant ever.
Wow! Truly inspiring, and I love how he met his wife through TV and they had a kid! What a great contestant.
Man, right in the feels. That is true dedication, determination, and inspiration.
A real inspiration
This story gives me hope.
He's one of my favorite contestants
This story made me cry and Eddie is a GREAT contestant!
Eddie you are truly awesome!! ☺
Won 5 times on Jeopardy and has a family, that's a big winner
I really wish these episodes could be found somewhere. I'm totally blind myself and I kind of want to see if anything is different for those contestants. Call it trying to knock as many nerves out of the equation in the future as possible
Eddie Did Awesome On Jeopardy Since 1999
I have never rooted so hard for someone on Jeopardy. Eddie was awesome!
Eddie is the man😎😎
Sir. You are truly an inspiration.
Wow. Absolutely in awe.
Very remarkable
One of my all time favorites! Love Eddie, so glad he's doing well!

@@morganjanelle4282 And let's not forget that aspiring young scientist who was diagnosed with ALS in 1963. With a life expectancy of two years, he made the best of those two years until he had to face the inevitable. He revolutionized the access to physics, gathered fans all around the world, became one of the greatest and widely recognized geniuses of all time, until those two years were over and he died... in 2018. He also was the only actor to play himself on Star Trek: The Next Generation, this Stephen Hawking.
I somewhat remember that guy's run. I was impressed that he could play Jeopardy! without seeing the clues. I guess if you know the question and can hit the button quickly, you can do anything.

What's even more amazing is the fact of not having the advantage of the light the others had as to when to ring in, in addition to the rest of it. So he was handicapped several ways when playing.
It's so weird to think that I was 9 when he was first on Jeopardy, and I've remembered him all these years. So glad to hear that he's still doing well.
Incredible. Absolutely incredible.
Wonderful! I needed this.

What a beautiful family he has!
The More You Know 🌟
This is truly amazing and he is an inspiration. Goes to show that nothing, not even a visual impairment can keep someone from playing the game of Jeopardy. It's just a matter of being able to play the game.
So cool. I remember watching him when I was a kid. Good to know what he's been up to.
Lovely!

My mom and I watched his original run! I’ve thought about him lately with the champions games and such. Thanks for the update!
I hope they continue to follow his son closely...many kids go into remission only to develop solid bone tumor cancers as teenagers once growth hormone kicks in. My nephew died at 14 after successfully fighting retinal blastoma , but died from osteosarcoma that showed up throughout his body!
His son is soooooo cute! 😍
There are four contestants that almost any Jeopardy fan can name off the top of their heads. Three of them are the the all-time greats, Holzhauer, Jennings, and Rutter. The fourth is Eddie Timanus. If they ever choose to have another all-time greats series like the one they did at the beginning of this year, they need to include him.

When they do their 40th season, if they have another big reunion tournament akin perhaps to their 30th year event, he has to be for sure.
He is in the top 5 of my all-time favourite contestants alongside Ken, Brad, Hans von Walter, and Ramsey Campbell.
What they mentioned about his son is nothing short of amazing. Cancer research matters people.
I think other than the Braille cards, he did have an earpiece that chimed when the board light went off, which allowed him to use his signalling button like the other contestants.

Man that's a great end to the story!
In 1999 Alex Trebek is more nervous about Eddie Timanus they gave him a card as you all know that contains all the categories in braille so he need to use his memory only to figure which clues in the categories that they used up.

Eddie, you are disabled but able to rock. You made history as the first disabled person to appear on Jeopardy. At least the show was very Americans With Disabilities Act friendly, with accominations like a Braille Board. If you and your family ever comes to Atlanta, Georgia for DragonCon, we will get you the Braille editiod of our picture program book and get top priority seating. And, you and your family would get to see me sing. DANGER WOMAN
Proof you can play Jeopardy with your eyes closed.
Does anyone know how he was able to keep track of which values had been called?
I hear he only drives the cars at night.

how cool that he found a wife because he was on Jeopardy!
Eddie Got His Eyes Closed, Maybe He’s Been Sleeping By Those Monsters.
I like the part where alex trebek says: here is a braille card for you.
Due to Eddie Timanus being blind, there are some changes in accommodation after passing the test. Eddie was given a card with the categories in Braille for each round & he was given a keyboard to type his response and wager in the Final Jeopardy round.
And he won two cars. Lucky guy!
