He's far from my "favorite" contestant, but he's far and away the best Jeopardy! player I've ever seen (with the exception of Ken, who showed he was better, only because he adapted his "comfortable" style of play to deal with the pressure-filled competition from James' high-risk/high-reward strategy, and KILLED IT! BWAH-HAH-HAH-HAH!)

Davies made a really excellent point, the greatest thing about watching James on tv is the juxtaposition of his two identities. One is the game show villain, the antagonist who will be quick to make a snappy comment, plays aggressively, and is evidently fond of "crushing people's dreams". The other is the family-oriented, philanthropic, down-to-earth guy who really cares about the people around him and expresses that very clearly. The result is a very chaotic but lovable J! champion who leads by example both on and off the Alex Trebek stage 👏❤

@@rachel_a_whisman17 She played great and she easily could have won that final guy, but at the same time it wouldn't have been fair to James after winning just about every game to not win the tournament after just losing one game, so I think it went down how it should have. Mattea was the only player to outplay James though, which she did in that last game. Her family should be very proud, and I'm sure her dad is wherever he is. Mattea is very likable, she seems like such a nice person so I understand rooting for her.

I can't imagine what the contestants were feeling. James was so gracious despite his heartrate probably doubling. He handled it so well; I'm glad he won. All of the masters were great, but he stood out as a champ from the start. To do as well as he did and have it all come down to the last second was stunning. I was so worried for the guy. Kudos to the Jeopardy legend, Ken Jennings; he did a spectacular job and is such an elegant host.

It was fun and entertaining, but I am a bit troubled that Jeopardy's idea of "The Masters" was, as Sarah mockingly called it, a "repeat of the most recent Tournament of Champions with James." OK, I get it - Schneider, Amodio and Roach are three of the top five most successful players in terms of games won, but two of those contestants didn't even win the Tournament of Champions. In fact, Amodio and Roach finished third in their respective semifinal matches. Obviously, Roach and to a lesser degree, Amodio proved that their "one-and-dones" at the TOC were a total aberration, but why did both of them get a "second chance" while other truly formidable players with TOC titles on their resumes were left out in the cold? While Andrew He and Sam Buttrey did make the finals of the TOC, their accomplishments prior to the tournament weren't exactly legendary. He was a five-game winner - plenty of those guys can claim such bragging rights over the years, including a plethora of standouts who had to "retire" after five games. Yeah, I know ... He's run ended with a loss to Schneider, who obviously turned out to be an all-time great in regular-season play. Nevertheless, there are, as I mentioned earlier, plenty of five-game winners over the years, along with six-, eight-, nine, 12-, 13, 19- and 20-game winners as well. And Buttrey was a professors' champion. Mind you, he certainly held his own at both the TOC and The Masters, but again, why is a professors' champ invited while others with far more impressive accomplishments are dismissively snubbed? For example: Colby Burnett is a former teachers' champion (I think we can say that "professors" and "teachers" are pretty much interchangeable when it comes to game shows). He also won his respective TOC and then triumphed in a match against two very strong players (a former TOC champion and a former TOC runner-up) at the Battle of the Decades' tourney. On the other hand, Buttrey, who looks like a super nice guy and I really enjoyed his sense of humor, took third in the TOC and yet, he got the nod over a far more accomplished teachers/professors' champion like Burnett? And what about Brad Rutter? Yes, he was shockingly invisible at the GOAT tournament, but he is still the all-time money winner and defeated so many legends at the Ultimate TOC and the Battle of the Decades (including Ken Jennings multiple times) in the process. Perhaps Jeopardy wanted to move on from the "old" era. Thus, players like Brad and other all-time greats such as Chuck Forrest or Bob Verini are ... well, I guess, no longer "attractive" for these special tournaments. However, why does the "new" era include just James and the more "heralded" 2022 contestants? Why not Alex Jacob, who had, perhaps, the most dominant TOC run ever? That was after the UTC and the Battle of the Decades, so it's not like his performance is ancient history. If you want to stick to more recent times, what about Sam Kavanaugh? He won the 2021 TOC against some strong competition. Sure, there were no 20-plus game winners during that tournament, but as Andrew He and Sam Buttrey proved, even the most statistically dominant players (such as Roach and Amodio) can be defeated and even crushed by mere "mortals." Let's not forget Emma Boettcher either (I have a hunch Jeopardy James knows her status as a three-day champion is a bit modest to say the least). Again, it was a still a delightful tournament to watch and great television, but the fact that Jeopardy's attitude was basically, "Well, regardless of the success of all of the champions over the past 30-something years, we have determined that the greatest players ever (with Ken being ineligible since he is now the host) are James and five other players from the 2022 TOC (and, I hate to keep beating a dead horse, but two of those players didn't even WIN a match at the TOC). That's our evaluation and we're sticking to it. End of discussion." Thus, my response is, "Wait, what?"

They really need to do something about this format because it just doesn't make sense. Congrats James, it's unbelievable he could the record he did against players this good, and I don't think most people realize how insane that is. Mattea really upped her game more so at the end, and was the only one to give James a real game, and she did it twice, and even outplayed him the last game. My only criticism may have been the format setup or points system. Maybe only 3 contestants should have made it to the semis or finals, and overall points playing some kind of role? James was 6-1 in regular games, 3-0 in semi-games (9-1), that I would have been disappointed if Holzhauer would not have won by simply falling behind in only one game or because of one Daily Double, when he had already won nine games. I would have felt like the true winner (and audience), or most deserving, would have been cheated out of the overall win and title.

James is awesome. He completely deserved this title , whether or not he won the last game, and the format shouldreally be tweaked. He was clearly the dominant player. However, he sort of dodged the question in the middle of the interview. Does he actively study on a regular basis? Has he been studying since the GOAT? I am genuinely curious how he and these other contestants become such encyclopedias. Now that they have completed their big jeopardy runs are they constantly studying in anticipation of the next time they could get a call to play in the next jeopardy tournament?

The thing is James DOMINATED the whole competition in a very extreme way. If James losing one game to Mattea at the end meant he didn't win the competition, it just wouldn't have seemed right or made any sense at all. That's the problem with the format though, it just makes no sense, and the fact he could have lost is crazy. He beat everyone countless times and most games in a very dominating fashion. I know he still would have been considered the best player by far even if Mattea won, but I think it's only fair James gets the first place price and recognition as the winner. If only she let her instinct took over and assumed that since Jame's game is exceptionally way, way off and that the FJ would certainly be very tough then there is a chance he'd miss it. I didn't have to root for him, I knew he was the best player on that stage, even though I had Mattea favored to win it all going into the last Final clue. But his wagering instinct was just as good, giving him that win. As always, it takes someone else's A+ Game to even have a shot to beat the Master. It's literally amazing to me that, had James not second-guessed himself in that one Final Jeopardy!, he would have been undefeated in the entire Masters tournament! And, speaking of an A+ Game, I was (admittedly, pleasantly) surprised when Ken showed that he could match up with James in the GOAT Tournament (and adjust his strategy outside his comfort zone in order to win quite convincingly).

They don't want to take it away at all. James is by far the best player ever without luck and variance. His stats are insane. The game is a bit more complicated with all the variance. They also had a horrible format for the masters, and they did that for excitement too since it gave any of the 3 players a good chance to win in the finals regardless of what happened before hand. Skill wise they should just add up the points for all the game to determine the best player.
