I can relate; The year 1971, I was 22 a wild child building a business and sowing my oats. She was a 17 year old school girl from a small town in the Appalachians, tall , blond hair, blue eyed and from the minute she walked through the door I was in love. We spent many a day together over the next year as I would drive miles from anywhere I was to see and be with her. She was the first woman/girl I respected enough to not consummate our love out of wedlock. The caveat was she was engaged to the towns rich kid that treated her like a possession he could show off and she really didn't love him. Time went on and I pressed her to call it off with him. One night as we were sitting on her parents porch he showed up and a confrontation ensued. He left and I gave her an ultimatum to make a decision then either he or I and if she couldn't I was leaving not to return. She was upset, crying and couldn't so like a hot head young fool I left driving out of those mountains never to return. A bit of time went buy I found consolation in another I married on the rebound for a brief period of time, thoughts always drifting of her, comparing other women to her. A few years went on and she found me at a place I was working, she married him because she heard I had married. She wanted to see me so I sent her a plane ticket, the day arrived and I went to the airport to pick her up but she didn't arrive, heartbroken I went home and moved on with my life. Years go by I met another, we decide to marry. I come home from work one day and my soon to be bride hands me a bouquet of flowers telling me a lady had dropped these off for me. Looking at the hand writing and special spelling of the name I knew who it was. The next day at work I get a call from her once again at work. She is in a few towns over on a business trip and wants to get together. Pride once again hinders my decision making and I tell her I am getting married an that after she didn't show with the pain I went through that I didn't want to see her. All the while my emotions screaming at me to drop what I am doing and run to her, which I should have done because my marriage to the other was doomed from that point. Many many years go by and thoughts always drift back of her. Over the time relationships come and go thoughts always drifting to her and the comparison keep me from commitment. My 50's come along she on the East Coast, me on the West, happenstance puts us in contact with each other. We write, We talk on the phone, she's unhappily married with a child, I single, she has a business meeting she has to come out for and we decide to meet. I fly to where she is, from the time I walk through the airport gate and see her the love we felt for each other was like it always had been. We spent the next week laughing, loving, making love as though we were never apart. Time came to leave, I wanted her to leave him and come be with me but her being the person she is she couldn't break up the marriage for the sake of her child. Time went on and the separation took it's toll till the decision was made that we had to let it go for our own well being and so physically it ended but I always in my heart even at 73 years old I carry the love of that one special person I had in my life for a brief while....So yes I can relate.....Sorry for this being so long winded but I'm happy to tell my story and this song brings fond memories.

I too have one of these lost loves out there. We know we are each others soul mates but we belong to someone else now. We made a pact many years ago that if we ever single at the same time we will be together again. Not sure if it will ever happen but I think about it often. No one knows what the future holds. Live it one day at a time.

I don't know if anyone else can relate but when I fall in love I don't stop loving them ever but it transforms into a different kind of love. The kind of love that heals your heart. I don't think anyone has ever truly loved me in a romantic sense but for me love is my strength. It's something I will always carry with me from every person I have ever loved. Someday I hope I find someone who can love me back the way I have learned to love because it's so beautiful and I just want to share this feeling with someone who can understand.

That’s not to say she hasn’t accomplished so many amazing things in her career, because she has, and she has made herself a household name especially with Sugarland. I love how raw she sounds, its portrays how it really feels when you love someone like that. Just watched a CMT Crossroads show with Jennifer Nettles and Cheap Trick, and she did this song as a duet with Robin Zander, and it was pure magic !Robin Zander is one of the great underrated vocalists of rock and roll, and he can sing with the best of them, even at the age of 68 yrs. !!!

I met him my senior year of high school…I just came out of a bad relationship and he completely swept me off my feet. Though we met through social media, that first FaceTime call I knew. My heart felt like it was glowing and I just couldn’t get enough of him from the beginning. We fell in love so quickly, but we were long distance which sucked. After 4 months he moved to my state and we were inseparable. Let me tell you…you always hear the stories of love at first sight or how falling for that person just happened all at once. That’s how it was with him, it came as second nature. He was my other half…due to family issues and things out of our control we had to end it after a year and a half. My heart felt like it exploded, I never imagined having to say goodbye to the person I loved the most. It’s been 6 months and he’s trying to move on and so am I, but there is still something making me hold on. I hear his name in conversations, I notice when somebody has the same birthday as him, I see his truck everywhere and he doesn’t even live in this state anymore. I can’t get him out of my head. I’ve prayed and tried fo get him out of my head but he’s always there. I wish I could unlove him if he’s not going to make his way back into my life at some point. I miss my best Friend.

I fucking cry every time I listen to this. I always think about my ex that I was with for 3 years and how I'm still very much in love but the feelings aren't mutual. "I wasn't lost until you found me." 💔

This woman has a very rare gift....her voice is sooo real and raw....just listening is like WATCHING a live performance.....and to watch her perform!!!! Each and every time she's on stage it's ALWAYS ALL-OUT and dead on with the subject matter of the lyrics.....I'd never turn down the opportunity to be in the audience....she crushes me.

This is the kind of love I wish everyone could feel in their life time. I was married to a man that his touch would send chills through me, just watching him in whatever he did I would ache for him just to touch me. I had that gorgeous man for 21 years. God needed him home and he left so unexpectedly . I would die to have him back to touch me. There will never be a man that could make my body cry and hurt for them. I am so thankful I had the opportunity to feel that kind of love espically with him. It's been 28 months since he went to heaven to this day when I see hours pictures I get that ache that hurt like it was a minutes ago. My angel forever

I haven't heard Jennifer Nettles' songs in A LONG time...This song is so heartfelt, sad & awesome.

There's always going to be that one. That one who can rip your beating heart out of your chest.. Oh how I would I love him if I could. I've loved him since I was 14..we went to school.together. we had a brief encounter when I was 23. I told him how I felt..he wasn't ready for that I touched his cheek and said you don't know what you want do you. I drove away. I didnt see him again for 35 years..Through synchronicities that I can't explain we were able to talk again. He came here from some states away. I never loved anyone like I have him..He still doesn't want me like I do him..After 2 years of crazy love he's going to leave me. I never knew pain this intense. Like I can't breathe without him..Unlove him? For 40 years I haven't been able to. I guess I've been fortunate to not have felt the pain of heartbreak this for 54 years. This one is going to kill me. I don't think I can survive it. Life can be so cruel..And you would think I would be better prepared for this at this age. Feel like such a fool.

8yrs for me..... and this one pretty much summed up my thoughts exactly. I am still friends with him although we kind hit an awkward moment where he sort of backed away due to not wanting to give me false hope etc but the reality is I know all this and I don't actually expect that to change (hope one day MAYBE sure - I mean you're not exactly gonna just be like lock it in a box and throw the box into the ocean especially when you know that box ain't gonna sink no matter what you try to make it do so - its fighting a losing battle) but when I try to sort of go I get where you are and I can't change that and all that the reality is I'm always gonna care and love you on a scale that nobody - not even myself - can explain.... this song basically EXPLAINS just that (that you can't explain it)... you can't unlove them no matter what you do and you kind of accept that but also need them to understand that that is just how it is. It's not their fault really and it's not even yours it's something that just seems to have wedged itself in the one part of your soul that you simply can't shut off. The only real solution of course is if they totally and completely did you wrong like an ultimate betrayal of sorts... and then maybe you could toss them out of your life/heart/mind/soul but that's not what anyone wants from someone they love THIS deeply. (I imagine that would actually completely break a person).

This song can bring so many interpretations for so many of us who have hurt from love. Jennifer knows what words to sing to help us get through tough times. I have loved her music from the start and happy she is out doing her own thing just goes and shows everyone to never give up on ur dreams they will come true if u try hard enough.

For me, the story is the husband's betrayal and her not being able to not love and want him anymore. It's hard to stop loving someone. As a matter of fact, you don't. How hard it is to walk away and forget no matter how toxic but knowing it's the best thing.

no matter what I do , our love was so deep I will never forget him. no matter what happens I will always think of him. it's been 2 yrs now and I still think of him everyday. this song just makes me cry bc love is truly supposed to hurt.

If you don't feel her soul when she sings this...then ..... It fills my eyes with tears and it is very relatable. Who has not experienced love lost or a broken heart? I surely have and it is true....you can't UNLOVE someone.

God introduced me to the man I was to marry shortly after He had given me an invention. After I met the man, God told me he would reject me because we were to go into a test together before the invention comes to pass. The man's rejected me through the whole test because I'm sure he can't change his mind mid stream. The test had been 19 years so far. I can't remove the love God rooted in me when I met him!!! I've been stuck like Chuck ever since. Until the test is over. Sure makes it hard at times when people don't believe me but I stick with God's choice........not my own!!!!❤

She is simply an amazing artist. One of the few true artists still out there able to articulate the incredible human experience - good, bad or ugly.

I couldn't have found this song at a more perfect time, falling in love and falling apart and then finally able to walk away. My interpretation anyway, I'll never stop loving you, I'll never stop thinking about you and I hope one day our stars will align and I'll be in your arms. Until then, I can't do it to myself.

Most of these comments are about loving someone who is abusive, controlling, and/or just all around bad for the relationship. 💔 This song makes me think of the one that got away- because I let him go. It was what I had to do at the time, but it has left a void in my heart. I still believe he is my soulmate, which I never believed in until I met him, and I still feel like we will somehow be together again. My heart aches for him. I can never unlove him. 🐰❤🐻

I've often wondered how you can love someone who's hurt you the most. My daughter's dad left when our youngest was diagnosed with brain cancer at 5. I've stayed single and have just focused on raising my girls. I spent 20 years of my life loving someone who I want to hate, but cannot explain it. My daughter's 3 years in remission now and my oldest has left for college. Maybe one day I'll allow myself to experience love again, for now I'm a mom of 2 amazing girls who I love more then life itself.
