The pressure on world leaders to reduce carbon emissions is greater than ever. Many countries have plans to hit net zero, but questions arise as to their feasibility. Adopting a net zero solution requires radical change to our way of life which some argue we are not prepared for. Protests have arisen in Oxford after claims that net zero encroaches on civil liberties. Can we reconcile net zero with economic growth or must we look to an alternative economic model? What alternative solutions could we be pursuing?
ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY: The Oxford Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. Since 1823, the Union has been promoting debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.
The Oxford Union is deeply grateful and encouraged by the messages of support in response to our determination to uphold free speech. During our 200 year history, many have tried to shut us down. As the effects of self-imposed censorship on university campuses, social media and the arts show no signs of dissipating, the importance of upholding free speech remains as critical today as it did when we were founded in 1823. Your support is critical in enabling The Oxford Union to continue its mission without interruption and without interference. You can support the Oxford Union here: oxford-union.org/supportus

The UK needs to deal with the fact it's not a empire anymore, China & India's building of coal power plants currently and with future plans to build more, doesn't only cancel out Europe's and the USA's carbon emission plans, we are likely to see an co2 emissions increase globally in the future, the UK would be best served given it's irrelevancy in size on the global scale to focus on how to better enrich it's people and prepare for the hard times ahead, than crippling itself on carbon emission standards that in some cases have been literally omittedly confirmed not possible to be reached with current technology and in others situations practically impossible, while harming your economy, especially on the poor. I have noticed recently any legislation that would bend the poor over and would be deeply unpopular, is now somehow characterized as being apart of climate change and therefore blasphemy to question. Free yourself from this blood letting mindset.

Is this a British thing? She is dressed as if going out for a fun weekend night. In the US, a young woman giving a serious speech would dress much more professionally. Would she go to a job interview dressed like this? Would she go to work dressed like this? Also, young men giving speeches on the same platform are not dressed in tank tops. As an American, I am curious if this is a British thing or just her. I have seen other young women on this platform dressed as if they are going to a ball. Maybe as students they don’t own professional outfits yet. Young American women seem to be better prepared and more aware about this kind of stuff. Her speech was okay. Needs to improve her delivery and annunciation. I searched her. She gave another speech and she was wearing another black evening gown. Maybe it’s a British thing. Maybe young men and women dress for these events as if they are going to the prom. Strange.

The dress code for speakers at The Oxford Union is black-tie which is a societal dress code, not a professional dress code. Also men wear dinner suits, not a suit and tie. She is very much dressed in accordance with this dress code. Wearing a "professional outfit" would in fact be quite the opposite of being "aware of this kind of stuff".

@@SilvanBennett Yes, I looked at a few more videos, and you are correct. It just seems strange for Americans to see bright young women dressed like this to give a serious talk. I think a more professional dress code would put the young men and women at more equal footing. If young men and women showed equal amount of “skin,” it would be a more fair debate. I respect your traditions but reserve the right to have a different opinion and preference. We dress like this too but to go out for a fancy dinner or a ball, which by definition involves wanting to attract the interest of one’s date. Not to debate.

Leave it to an American to dress shame a woman as one of the first comments. Interesting priorities

@@bobbrown8155you’re spot-on. On May 8th they had a woman speak and she was clearly and intentionally exposing most of her breasts. I made a similar comment on that video. A woman shouldn’t seduce viewers with her breasts. I would assume that’s common knowledge.
