I like her one from a few years back, but that’s because she was singing like herself. She was coached to sing and talk more like Aretha for the film.

Why is their mixed reviews on this movie RESPECT starring Jennifer Hudson? Why can't everybody be on one accord? I think she did a wonderful job portraying the musical giant Aretha Franklin aka Queen of soul

There are mixed for the simple fact she shouds NOTHING like Aretha L. Franklin and her on screen portrayal is subpar. Aretha voice went through 4 stages in her life and Jennifer doesn't have the essence of either stage, nor the charisma or coyness of Arethas off stage persona or her on stage personality. Jennifer is LOUD! She got the role years ago on the strength of her friendship with Aretha and her portrayal of Effie White. She went into this role 'sing like herself sing an Aretha song' rather than 'portraying Aretha singing an Aretha song'. Add to that the fact the film glosses over alot of Aretha's hardship and trials that ppl already know about. Granted, these are things Aretha did NOT want talked about nor does her family, it presents a half told story that's not even threaded in a believable straight line. The movie was not done right and her story was not done justice, probably why she's been working on this film since 2009.

Do you even realize how difficult it is for an Afro American woman in this country too take home that golden little trophy that only white people are capable of winning??? We our talking about a Oscar winning singer not even the Queen of soul came out shining like a diamond with an Oscar win even after fifty or more years! When it cones to Jennifer Hudson she rose from the ashes and became the superstar that she was called to be by the grace of GOD she came out on the winning side. She is victorious in every aspect of the word and I am most definitely proud of her many accomplishments!

@@Suri-o7w Jennifer hasn't had a hit single nor album since her debut album, her last big role was Effie White in "Dreamgirls", both of these were before 2015 and her upcoming album had been pending since 2015 with 3 flopped singles. She's not 'shinning like a diamond' when her latest big role is being called into questions by critics for her singing and acting. She took home an Oscar Award years ago, for Supporting Actress, because she acted and sung her ass off in that role. And she's been recreating that role in every other singing role since then. We can tell the truth without being emotional, Jennifer did bring Aretha to life on screen or in the studio. She showed up as herself a d that's not what we wanted to see. And Aretha didn't need an Oscar Award to solidify her place in the industry. She shifted culture and broke barriers, she's involved in so many Black History moments in history, she had a career that spanned 60 mostly just in the music industry. You're a damn fool to think she need a Oscar Award or any award. Her voice is considered a national treasure, Jennifer's voice is considered loud, dramatic and one dimensional.

You can tell who actually listens to Arethas music and who doesn't.......that's all I'm going to say...

I watched this movie yesterday for free during a Southwest flight. I don't have access anymore so I can't rewatch this entire scene. I was so intrigued by all the differences in the three versions she and the Muscle Shoals band tried. The producers said the first version was too churchy (I liked it and the one musician even said "I liked it!" :) ) and then the second one--okay, she said it was too busy. And the third, okay, it's pretty much the final product we all hear on the radio. I liked all three but I can't describe the distinctions. Can someone musical describe them? I also didn't find the songwriter's version boring. I'm not a musician so I'm sure I am missing something. What am I missing? lol

I didn't hear effie in any of these songs. I definitely heard effie in her actual lines she delivered but if you think she sounds like effie in these songs you must have forgotten the movie. Jennifer has literally never been this comfortable in her higher range before with little strain. She is mimicking arethas higher tone the entire time and some moments she does drop it and sounds like jennifer hudson but definitely not effie.

Loved the fact Jennifer Hudson #PrincessofSoul protray Aretha Franklin #QueenofSoul but wasn't feeling the movie could've been better director

It's such a shame that Jennifer is being sidelined this award season for her masterful portrayal of Aretha in favour of some ridiculous perfomances from white actresses. The amount of purging Hollywood does about racism, diversity, inclusivity but still has only awarded one woman of color with the academy award for best actress, and sidelining a great performance by a black woman in favour of cartoon performances like Jessica Chastain and Lady Gaga is abysmal, deplorable and downright unfair
