    "And what happens if you're right, Jekyll? And you do manage to separate good from evil? WHAT HAPPENS TO THE EVIL!?" I fucking love that line from this musical. It's just this fantastic mix of ominousness and dramatic irony.

    You know what? Jekyll is actually in the right at this moment in time. Everyone has a dark side which they conceal from the rest of the world. They are just as false as we can be sometimes. This is a excellent way of holding up a mirror to society.

    They removed a part of the song at around 6:54 where they say “you’ve missed the opportunity - this whole things too bizarre - just open up your mind and see - this man has gone too far - why won’t you listen to me? -dammit man - don’t you see - you’re on your own” and a bit more …. I can imagine the onstage voices didn’t sound good during that part. But that is my favorite part 100% and I need to find it being performed live.

    One thing I didn't like about the original BoG (board of governors) scene was that most of the Governors didn't get any solo singing bits (except for Lady Beaconsfield). Almost all of it was Madame Stride singing. And while her voice was absolutely incredible, it drowned out the rest of the Governors. (for example, "Henry I've always encouraged your enterprise" was supposed to be sung by Sir Danvers, not Stride because she hates Jekyll, so it didn't make sense for her to sing it) But here, they fix it up a bit so the BoG actually get a say in the matter, (Bishop and Sir Danvers getting most of their lines back) therefore being a bit more accurate to the original play. Don't get me wrong though, I loved both of Madame Strides performances, but I prefer this one due to accuracy. Sorry, had to get that off my chest

    I don't think Simon Stride from the original musical was intended to be a villain, so I don't think Madame Stride is one another. Sure, he's in rivalry with Dr. Jekyll for Emma, though I don't really think he's in the story enough to be a villain. Madame Stride acts more like a mother figure to Emma with her criticism about her engagement to Dr. Jekyll. I guess it kind of makes sense to have a Madame Stride, especially in a high school production. Plus, I think it could be because the plot of the musical already has Emma and Lucy having feelings for the same man, so two men having feelings for the same woman as well would have made things more complicated.

    In the actual musical Simon Stride actually does die. At Jekyll and Emma's wedding Jekyll transformed into Hyde after a several week/month hiatus. I believe Simon tried to stop Hyde from killing Emma and Hyde stabs him in the chest with either a stick or his own sword i think.

    In the original version of the story, the character of Stride is male. He is a rival for the affection of Emma (or Lisa in the original). He is the owner of the Red Rat , where Lucy works.

    I think a big part of how they act has to do with the coordination of their lines with the pacing of the orchestra. This show is infamous at this point for speeding up its songs, this being a clear example.

  • @K4Cubing
    @K4Cubing12 күн бұрын

    What… Madame stride???? Anyway I don’t like this version because it takes all of the lines away from the other governments and just gives them to stride who is just overly showing off her singing ability which is unnecessary and almost detrimental in portraying the proper emotion. Yes the performance is very impressive but that’s not important when it gets in the way of telling the story. Also the line “The bishop speaks for all of us when he says ‘You’re playing god’” makes no sense when Stride herself was the one who said that, not the bishop like in the original. Anyways, I’m overly critical but things like this truly bother me. Why did anyone feel the need to change this already INCREDIBLE show? Don’t they recognize a finished work?
