‪@JeffBeck‬

Once a month I let our patrons choose the song that I analyze through a rigorous voting process, and this Halloween they picked this itteration of "I Put A Spell On You" by Jay Hawkins. I hear Joss Stone has a phenominal diva voice, coupled with Jeff Beck's expert blues guitar. . . this is definitely not a trick, but a treat for the ears!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Jeff Beck and Joss Stone for the first time, performing "I Put A Spell On You” Live at Wetten.

Could you please please please do a Janis Joplin? She has been my favourite female artist ever since I was 13. At the time I couldn't even understand what she was talking about, but it always hit me like a ton of bricks. Any song, really. But suggestions would be Maybe, Ball and Chain or Try (just a little bit harder). Love your work!

First time I heard Joss in 2004-ish, I was pleasantly surprised that such a talented southern black woman was making it in the industry at such an advanced age (assumed 40s/50s). Then I saw a tiny white 16 year old girl on the album cover and my mind pretty much melted.

Jeff Beck's 2007 show "Live at Ronnie Scott's" is an absolute classic. Every song on that is amazing. His rhythm section on that show are Vinnie Colaiuta on drums and Tal Wilkenfeld on bass, each legends in their own right. Joss Stone does great vocals on "People Get Ready" from that show.

The shots of the audience has nearly as many A-listers as the Grammys! The same video has Imogen Heap too. Also, Jeff Beck's Rock and Roll Party with Imelda May. The Les Paul / Mary Ford section is great but she takes the roof off with Walkin' In Sand. Jeff loves female singers but to my knowledge, Loud Hailer with Rosie Bones was the first complete album he made with one. Of all of them I think Joss may be the best foil for Jeff, besides him being about twice her age. They seem so on the same plain. Jeff is like the eternal 17 year old, just finding new things in the guitar. The way he plays off a great singer seems to push him to find new things.

For those of us conversant with the late, great Mr. Beck, it comes as no surprise to hear you state that (his) guitar "speaks"; this of course was Beck's trademark - he taught Hendrix a thing or two let me tell you, Elizabeth. This video presentation came before Beck's sudden demise - as I am sure you will be aware; nevertheless, it is a fitting tribute to this guitar impresario, notwithstanding the ebullient & expressive Joss Stone - that's one very sexy set of pipes !! Superlative combination.

Josh Stone is phenomenal on her own. But I've always been in awe of Jeff Beck's support of vocalists. His guitar mimics and converses with the vocalist. Never seen him play over a vocal - just great and tasteful. If you watch his right hand he multi-tasks four functions - strums the strings, adjusts tone, volume and whammy bar simultaneously in support of the vocalist and song. This is why he was unique.

This is a prime example of the brilliance of an excellent blues guitar. The guitar parts are basically vocal lines. I actually also strongly suggest looking into John Mayer's Blues stuff. He has the vocal/guitar conversation with himself. Also, not so much blues, but you really should look into his song Neon. He's basically playing the lead and rhythm guitar parts, percussion parts, AND vocals all at the same time. Just his voice, guitar, and a mic.

blues doesn't even scratch the surface in evaluating his ability/technique and his career. He's your favorite guitarist's favorite guitarist. RIP on a side note, you should consider viewing his set "cause we ended as lovers" from Ronnie Scotts and evaluate his playing as a voice. this was his hallmark in his later years... recreating his voice with his guitar. sweeps bends, trills, distortion, harmonics... it would be interesting to hear your descriptions of how this would be done vocally.

Joss Stone is simply amazing. One of the greatest soul singers alive. Goosebumps all over. And Jeff Beck, well, also simply one of the greatest guitar players currently out there. He can make that instrument sing like no other. There's two instrumental covers where he plays the vocalist lines, and you can literally almost hear the words. Stevie Wonder's "Cause we Ended as Lovers", and the Beatles' "A Day in the Life". No vocals on those, so not necessarily something for the channel, but well worth a listen. 😊

I don't really know Joss' music, but i certainly heard a lot of Janice Joplin in this offering. I was really pleased with your attentiveness to Jeff Beck's virtuosity. He's got to be the most articulate player ever when it comes to pulling a voice out of a Stratocaster. As you're not otherwise familiar with his music, i would like to recommend you give a listen to JEFF BECK LIVE AT RONNIE SCOTT'S, free on KZread. That's normally a Jazz club, but the owner is such a fan of JB's that he gave him a billing for five nights and Jeff showed up with three other monsters and set the place on fire. Several vocalists sat in for a number as well. Please familiarize yourself with Jeff Beck's guitar playing alchemy - he's just too good to not know. Thanks for this and so many more beautiful reactions - 💙 💙 💙

Joss put her first serious content out when she was about 20-years-old, after having performed since she was about 13-years-old. She has always had a powerhouse voice. She's an amazing talent... whose life was a bit of a predictable mess during her twenties. Let's all hope she keeps herself together enough to continue meeting her potential. I'm glad you've found her. Jeff Beck is a legendary guitarist who every musician should know.

Jeff Beck is one of the OG English Bluesmen, as real and powerful as Page, Clapton and Robin Trower (he is someone else you should explore, I recommend the song Bridge of Sighs.) Joss has such amazing control of her voice, she puts her soul into each note and a beautiful soul it is. I wasn't familiar with her work but now that I've been introduced, I'll have to look her up and see what else she has in her catalog. Good stuff, thanks and have the best day you can. ✌️🖖

I’d love to hear her take on Jimmy Dewar, a subtle vocalist who doesn’t seem to be doing much unless you try to sing along, at which point you realize he’s very good, and difficult to match.

Dewar's voice was like a smooth, aged, peaty single-malt. There was nothing simple about his vocals: his voice on "Bridge of Sighs" is as expressive as I've ever heard.

Beck is, to me, the best rock guitarist ever. He can play with a bluesy feel, and he came out of the 60's British blues explosion alongside players like Clapton and Page, players whose obeisance to the blues tradition are more obvious, but his influences are more in 1950's rock'n'roll. Beck has always developed as a player, adopting jazz fusion and eastern themes for example. He is always moving forward. Joss Stone is a great singer and Beck is very good at collaborating with excellent musicians and singers (he's played a lot with Beth Hart too).

I have heard of Joss Stone, but I am not familiar with her work. I am VERY familiar with Jeff Beck. The first time I heard him play (it was on "People Get Ready" with Rod Stewart) it completely changed how I viewed music. I remember thinking "that has to be what heaven sounds like." Jeff is 78 now, and if his recent work on Ozzy Osbourne's "Patient Number 9" is any indication, his touch and his phrasing have lost none of their searing, emotive quality. Looking forward to this! 🎸🎤

My introduction to Jeff Beck was him playing "Cause we've ended as lovers" with Tal Wilkenfeld at Crossroads years back... and I have been a fan of his since. Given that I prefer playing fingerstyle over a pick on the guitar, watching him and Derek Trucks play has always been a bit of inspiration to me :)

Another artist you should listen to; Tracy Chapman. She has such a beautiful powerful voice. There's a live version of her song "Fast car" at Wembley, it's her on a podium with just a mic and a guitar and it's incredible. Her vocals sound even better than they do on the perfectly mixed album (although the song deserves a full band). She's able to get 60.000 people to go quiet and pay attention with her singing in mere seconds.

This is wonderful to watch, not only for Joss but to see you introduced to Jeff Beck. Everything she does is wonderful...and I may add, Jeff Beck has also played with some of the most iconic voices in rock history, most notably Rod Stewart. For an introduction to that pairing, young and not yet nearing the height of their powers but showing their remarkable chemistry, I would recommend "Rock My Plimsoul" from 1968.

Elizabeth - the part when you hear the tone change into the more "rawr" cat noise you made: Right at 4:35 you can see him change the guitar pickup selector switch from the neck to the bridge. This increases the treble tones, which I guess makes it more sharp and "pinchy"? Using the neck pickup is when you get that nice, warm, smooth feeling sound. Hope this helps explain the change on the guitar that matches the vocals 😊

She's sung EXACTLY the same since she became famous in England at the age of just 13/14 years old and had the same voice then!! Even sang on live TV with James Brown who couldn't get enough of her voice! She's a fantastic singer from way down near Cornwall I believe here in England.. Jeff Beck well he's just a Legend Came up alongside and best mates with Eric Clapton and Revered by all the top guitarists for his ability to make the guitar do things no one else ever has! He was around the same time as Hendrix maybe a bit before and took the guitar probably similar direction to where HENDRIX would have had he lived.. (He's the guy Who Jonny Depp flew to England to join on stage and Sing Vocals during the Amber Heard Trial..) in the words of Clapton "He's never changed very down to earth and dedicated, lives a simple life youll find him either tinkering with vintage cars or playing guitar.. and that's pretty much Spot on.. top man absolute VIRTUOSO on the Strat! There's a great small Jazz Club performance of Jeff Beck Playing the World famous Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in London.. Where Eric Clapton gets up joins him on stage to do a song with him that's REALLY good. But there's countless hours of him playing with all the greats! He also discovered Tal Wilkenfield who in his words was "the next Jimmy Hendrix" when she was 14! She was touring the world with him became his bassist and since then has gone on to have a fantastic music career as a writer singer bassist, guitarist and great Musician!) Thing is Jeff Beck isn't a vocalist as far as I know so has always played in bands and been like a lead guitarists was in same band as Clapton in 60s in fact they're about the same age! But he's wearing well for it! Be good to see you cover some of his other stuff collaborations I know he's not really a vocalist but he tends to bring out the best performances of the vocalists and musicians he's playing with.. Cheers from London 👍😎 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧🙏
