Jeep Renegade review - tested on and off-road

The new baby Jeep Renegade offers genuine off-road ability, but is it as good on the road?

There's always been one hostile environment Jeep could never conquer, and that is the European car market. Their latest tactic is to dive into the world's fastest growing car sales segment - compact crossovers. They're doing it with the new Renegade.
You've only got to spend thirty seconds on any European road these days to know that compact crossovers, or small SUVs are hot property these days. There's the Nissan Juke, Renault Captur, Mercedes GLA and MINI Countryman - every manufacturer has either got one of these SUVs or is scrambling a team of designers to get one on the market.
Jeep promises it designed the Renegade to be true to its off-roading roots and have the best all-terrain ability in its class - not that it has much to beat. The Renegade is a really good little off-road car. The steering doesn't jump or fidget around, the body's nice and stiff and, crucially, it's fairly difficult to get the Renegade stuck.
Jeep's SelecTerrain four wheel drive system is present in the Renegade. It's an adaptive system where you can select a range of modes consisting of snow, mud, sand, rock and automatic setting. There's also a hill-descent system.
On the road, the Renegade is a bit of a mixed bag. Visibility is pretty bad both front and rear, but the gear change is positive, it doesn't roll too much in corners and there's plenty of grip. It can't quite match the sharper drive of the Skoda Yeti or MINI Countryman, though.
The interior certainly has a sense of humour with paint splatters on the dials and a reminder of Jeep's birthday. The plastics aren't as good as they could be and the infotainment system from Alfa Romeo isn't as good as the system found in the larger Jeep Cherokee. The interior sums up the Jeep Renegade - lots of flair but some flaws.
There's no doubt this is the most relevant Jeep in years, and there's finally a model worthy of comparison with European and Japanese rivals.

The car review business is full of $$$ influence and the Germans dominate with the perks they give 'top' reviewers, then their verdict becomes defacto and lesser reviewers are scared to break the narrative or they are considered poor. Ignore the pressreviews and look at the user reviews on cars they are always more accurate.

Nice review.....atleast we get to see and hear details of the on-road and off-road capabilities. Looks like a nice car, if it comes in under $23,000 for the 4x4 I'd be tempted to buy one. Driving here in icy or snowy conditions scares the crap out of me...you really need the 4x4.

A lot of people screaming "ugly car". 1) It's not a car. it is what we refer to as a Crossover Utility Vehicle (CUV). Not a truck or Body on Frame (BoF) SUV, and not really a car either. 2) Since it's not definitively a "car", its actually a very attractive CUV, I just wish these companies, FIAT CHRYSLER is FAR form the only one at fault for this), would figure out how to make A, B, C, and, as called for, D pillars that were only as thick as a Baseball bat and not a Cricket Bat. Did you see that A pillar? 3) Bright candy colors are NOT the Renegade's best suit. More earthy, more muted, even military, colors will work better. Other than all that, it looks positively smashing.

I think that's a good market for Jeep to enter. Good on Fiat for continuing the brand, and marching it into a direction. I don't don't think near as many people live in areas that would require off road capabilities, but it's nice for the ones that do to have a small unique car that can get them to work year round and yet still be stylish. Maybe I don't agree fully on the looks but I get it.

Finally someone that gets it. I live in the mountains. I have to go on bad forest roads and do all sort of off-roading almost every week. Not to mention the huge snow falls in the winter. If I were in the market for a B segment SUV/crossover I would need the capabilities of this vehicle. If you live in a city and drive this, well you're an idiot. You'd be better off in a Ford Fiesta.

I´m quite happy that it does off road well, because that is what I would suspect a JEEP to do, similar to what I would expect from any Landrover Product - That heritage from the history of JEEP does not just go way in a blink and should also not IMO. It looks terrible on still images, but it looks slightly better in motion (Still it is a very awkward tall design with a rather bad stance impression as a result). I have been very critical on this new Renegade and it´s exterior design and the worst thing that could happen was if it would be a bad off roader which apparently it´s not - that must help it´s credentials. I do understand that JEEP wan´t a bite of that market - if any USA brand should take it, then it should be JEEP. My guess is that the European market is not the only target for this Renegade, actually the looks might be better received in the East Asian markets and perhaps also in the South America. I have no real clue about how it will do in the home market, but my guess is that most American buyers still like it a bit more muscular than the expression of this new Renegade.

HesteBremse It will sell reasonably well in the US despite its looks. It has some nice features and there isn't nearly as much competition in the B segment as there is in Europe. You are correct that its major markets will clearly be Asia and South America. It is a very good fit for those markets.

Keep it in the cities where it belongs, let it make money, who cares, it is not off road capable. A dirt road is not off road... its still a road! Just keep the wrangler for those of us who want a solid frame, full length axles, 35" tires where we can crawl, mud, and winch ourselves across this beautiful country called America!

I will be purchasing it out of practicality, to go camping/hiking in the warmer months and skiing in the nearby mountains for winter. Great for Canadian winters where 4x4 is a necessity. Guess this guy is only considering his market and not others where this will truly shine. Good fuel economy and can deal with different road conditions, yes please.

+Auto Express Genius! You compare the hardcore Trailhook to Mini Countryman, Skoda Yeti or Nissan Juke? It's as if you'd compare a Landrover Defender with a Kia Sorento, Hyundai Santa Fe or Bmw x5. Never used to drive real offroaders on highways? More excursion of dampers, less direct steering and wind noise due to offroading design are obvious compromises. Otherwise, on hard terrain, you would loose contact to the ground, have therefore less grip, get stuck in a hole and break your wristles while controlling your steering wheel. If you want to review Suvs do it and compare them to your heart's content. Do the same with real offroaders like this, but be careful not to mix different cathegories without pointing out what the vehicles were produced and ment for.

Who care's about the reviewer and the name, a lot of brands have shitty names, like toyota Mr2, suzuki LapuTa, Ford Probe etc and are still good cars. This is a unique looking crossover, and just knowing that I can go offroading even though I never may is good enough reason to buy. (May I also add that this kind of looks like a Daihatsu Naked, and it has the dumb name to)

Looking forward to seeing this Renegade. Anxious to see it in person for my final opinion. I for one don't need a trail rated version like the Trailhawk because I can't imagine myself doing a Rubicon caliber of a trail. Although I do see myself doing a trail no higher than a class 3 for some backcountry camping or fishing with the family, in which case ground clearance and skid plates are what's most important to me. Seems to me the Trailhawk could be to much "jeep" for me and the city version maybe to much "fiat" for me. .... Also I must say that mud splash on the rpm guage and "since 1941" is kind of hokey. But all in all I'm looking forward to what's to come with the jeep fiat merger.

I am sick of British journalists being so negative towards American vehicles. The majority of this review was just negative feedback, I mean, give it a chance! This vehicle is a brilliant attempt at entering such a busy market: the exterior is different and funky, likewise with the interior. The quality also, to me at least, looks pretty decent as well, with various engine choices and trims. If the negativity keeps on showing then no one will buy these cars, and then we would probably end up losing Jeep over here in the UK/Europe, which would be a real shame. Let's see how the review of the 500X compares (seeing as they're nearly identical vehicles) to see if the negativity continues.

He's clearly reviewing it from the viewpoint of someone who will never take it off-road. I suspect the Renegade will do well in the US (the new Cherokee has done well, especially the Trailhawk). I am also jealous that the Euro market Renegade Trailhawk gets a 170hp turbodiesel with manual transmission. The US market Trailhawk is getting the 2.4L multiair and 9 speed auto but no other options. The 2.4L multiair isn't bad, but it is QUITE noisy and definitely sounds like it belongs in something with an Abarth badge, I have sampled one in a Dart and was struck by how loud it was even at idle (odd given that it is port injected but is still louder at idle than my direct injected Accord).

I don't understand why, over here in the UK, we're so critical of crossovers that aren't as good on-road as other cars because they have off-road capability. Surely it's the people that buy crossovers with no intention of any off-roading that we should be more critical of? I think it's great to finally see a crossover that has some substance, rather than simply being a jacked up road car with plastic cladding. I guess though that Brits are never going to be accepting of a US brand - we're so convinced that we're still the greatest nation on Earth, and so nothing could ever be as good as what we consider to be our own (Nissan Puke, made in the UK, 'Mini' Countryman, we somehow consider this British).

In the fall of 2017 I purchased a new 2017 Jeep Renegade from a dealer in Anchorage Alaska. I live in a remote Alaskan town with the closest mechanic over 100 miles away - in Canada. I made it clear to the dealer I needed a reliable, sturdy vehicle. The car was fine until the temperature dropped below 20F then it would start - and immediately stall with a noticeable smell of gas. I called the dealer and he recommended using Heet and blamed the bad gas in the town. Heet did nothing and no other car is having the same problem. The dealer is over 700 miles away and I can't have the car towed back. There's no one to work on it here and the dealer is unwilling to do anything more. The car is a princess car - it'll only run if it's warm and sunny. Which means i'm walking to work at 20 below. Moral is don't buy Jeep and don't buy a Jeep Renegade. As soon as possible I'm taking it to another town to trade it in for a Japanese or Korean car. Something reliable.

Closest thing to this IMO is the Subaru XV. It's got that undeniably good Subaru AWD system, about the same ground clearance (8.7 in, same as base renegade, trailhawk has a few more millimeters). Only difference off-road would be the approach angle, XV has an overhang on the nose, but that wouldn't really matter unless you go rock crawling and the renegade isn't designed for that either. On dirt, mud, snow, and gravel they're an even match. I personally would go with the XV. More refined on-road, better looking (at least not as polarizing), just as good off-road and probably priced similarly and gets similar or better gas mileage. Also, brand reputation comes in. Subaru's last forever. Jeep wasn't well known for reliability to begin with, now that Fiat, the most unreliable European carmaker, owns it I'd imagine this Renegade thing will struggle to last 150k mi.

clinkit I drive a Subaru XV, and actually take it off-road. The approach angle to speak of is completely true, as my front bumper has been scraped quite a bit from off-roading. Every angle of off-road specs I've looked up, the Renegade Trailhawk has superior approach, departure, and breakover angles. So I'm actually quite a bit jealous, though the bad approach angle of the front bumper likely helps with my fuel economy. Also, the Renegade Trailhawk comes standard with skid plates, while I had to order aftermarket skid plates and rock sliders for my Subaru XV.However, the stability control and traction control of the Renegade Trailhawk is likely to be better programmed for off-road use. Unlike Subaru's new SJ-chassis Forester or BS-chassis Outback, the GP-chassis XV doesn't get Subaru's X-MODE off-road programming that optimizes the stability control, traction control, and transmission for off-road use.Biggest two things that keep me away from the Renegade are the lack of a manual transmission on Trailhawk models and unproven strength and safety of the unibody structure. My Subaru XV's chassis passed the IIHS's stringent Small Overlap crash test, and I doubt most small crossovers are capable nor as strong as my XV's chassis for safety.

flybyav8tor Just light to semi-moderate stuff. If you've been to California's SVRA's, I generally drive on the green (easy) trails, and some blue (moderate) trails. The Subaru XV not super-capable like a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, but it's not entirely useless off-road like a Toyota RAV4 or Honda CR-V. What I know for sure is that I could probably take on the low level Moab trails with my Subaru XV with some scrapes to my rock sliders and skid plates.

So its not a bad SUV. I dont want a car or pickup truck because i have no use for that much cargo space so there isnt a whole lot out there.

In case you Yanx didn't notice, this is a British car magazine's channel, where they review mostly (exclusively?) cars sold on European/British market. And they review them using European/British point of view and expectations on how cars should perform over here. We have different transportation culture, hence we need different cars than you. This car (bubbly 500x under this boxy shape) in Europe comes with half of the engines with FWD (1.4, 1.6 petrols) and half with AWD (2.0 diesels) [and I bet their AWD sales will be 1/4 or 1/5 of all Renegades sold] so yes, you buy this car to drive it downtown too and if it corners like a 6wd troop transporter down the narrow old town streets or twisty country roads - it sux. That all being said, this guy missed to review rear passenger space, boot space, practicality and whatnot, so someone should send Mat to do a proper review.

Only Italians would dare to offer old-fashioned yellowish halogen lamps as DRL on a fresh relevant new car such as this in 2015. Are they trying to favor some halogen bulb lobby or what? As for FWD on a Jeep, that's what Fiat vehicles are for. The Compass already tried that move and it failed. Other than that the looks are great on the outside in my view. Oh and BTW nothing wrong with its name. In this time and age of asphyxiating police state and political correctness all around us, Renegade constitutes a well refreshing nameplate.

  • @be2keen

The guy is worried about the name? --The name of an American vehicle? Really? Well I have, unfortunately, met so many Brits in my life that I know that had he been reviewing a Land Rover named Renegade he’d then be praising the idea to no end. I can hear him saying, “Oh and the name, Renegade, what a brilliant stroke of genius on the part of the Land Rover marketing department. Right-O, cheerio I say. Why what other name could better convey the sheer magnitude of drama and controlled strength that this august vehicle carries in its DNA…” --And same for the Patriot. Now, as for the new American-designed Jeep Renegade, well, it is um, well, I’m sure it will be better than it seems. The interior is quite decent, and hill descent is cool as well. Anyway, the JK and Cherokees are at the top of their segments, and that is not going to change for a while.

It could never conquer the European car market? The first generations of the Jeep Grand Cherokee were huge successes in Europe too. That lasted until taxes went through the roof with Europe protecting its own market.

I'd rather be seen in this than a Cherokee, I just wish the new Cherokee was more boxy in the body and came with a 6 speed manual and proper transfer case... if I ever buy a new jeep I want a decent one and I don't want to get a wrangler that every man and their dog gets!

I think a lot of these cars will be replacing retired AWD Honda Elements. If this car can take the beating I give my Element, handle snow as well, stay stable in crosswinds, and not eat up a pile of parts it'll be welcome in my garage some day. Not to mention it comes with a manual, like my Element has.

Why doesn't anybody actually take this vehicle off road? The Cherokee had plenty of videos of it going off road vs driving on dirt roads. Aside from the semi low ground clearance, this should have all the right parts to handle anything it won't get hung up on. Intelligent awd system, low range transfer case, and short wheelbase would make it fun on less than paved scenarios, but no one seems to use it to its potential. Any more videos of people droning on about how it doesn't handle like a car and I might have an aneurysm.
