Jeep JL Wrangler Tire Carrier for Oversize Spare : EVO Heavy Duty Tire Carrier Installation

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Soon after installing a heavy 37" spare on the factory tire carrier of our Jeep JL Wrangler, Cindy and I had a myriad of people declare that we were for sure, going to jack up our tailgate. Of course, they said they saw it on social media and so it had to be true. I literally had guys trolling me about it on KZread and demanded that I admit, we would bend or break our tailgate in 6 months or less. It was just nuts! Well, 8 months after the fact - I'm happy to say that our tailgate was still holding up just fine and without any bending or breaking of any kind. However, I'd be lying if I said this setup was a perfect solution. As some of you know, we spend an enormous amount of time bombing across the desert and hard hits would in fact cause the tailgate to move just enough, to make an annoying knocking sound. Needless to say, this was something we wanted to address and did so, with an EVO Tire Carrier. In this episode of the JL JOURNAL, you get to see to install, one on your Jeep JL Wrangler. Thanks for watching and we hope you find our video to be helpful.

    To help hold the door in place, I've used wooden wedge shaped window shims. Adjust the wedge shims to fill the gaps before you start and tape them together once you have a good pre-load on the shims. Then if they do squeeze a bit while doing the job, just tap in another one or two wedges into the gap to adjust the gaps as required. Being wood also helps with not scratching the finish.

    Couldn't you just do one hinge at a time?

  • @phantumdrummer

    @phantumdrummer

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@LarryRichelli The hinges may be installed individually, but the carrier piece that actually attaches to the door is a one piece unit with both the upper and lower hinge points on the same unit. BOTH hinges will still have to be removed before installing the single carrier unit/piece. You will have more trouble and lose more time trying to line things up. As you will have loosen both hinges to get them lined up, while trying to hold up the carrier piece at the same time. Causing even more possibility of the door moving. It's best to have the carrier unit attached to the hinges making sure they are already lined up. Loosely install with everything together until ALL the bolts can be installed. Then tighten it all down equally after all gaps have been adjusted or checked that they did not move.

    I installed the equivalent of this on my JK a little over a year ago, holding a 37" on a steel wheel. Works great, no rattles. Only issue are the cheap bicycle brake pads used as bumpers. I made some out of HDPE with carriage bolts. I'm very happy with it.

    Great Tire Carrier, but guess what, at age 69 I struggle even lifting my 26x14x37 tires. What is NEEDED is a “Spare Tire Lift Jack” to remove heavy big tires from the tire carrier. This would be a HOT selling item!! Even young guys would buy one. I would buy one right now to save my back. See if you can get an engineer to design one and bring it to market. Hint: it would be a scissor-lift.

    The evo tire carrier is very good. Can be a bit noisy in the cold. But I have no regrets about mine on my JL. The only thing about it was. The third brake light mount that was included was mounted with the small Torques screws for the camera. And mine they ended up getting tired out and then stripped out after awhile on bumps. I had to get a after market third brake light mount for it. it does takes a bit more time then you would think to install. Great video!!

    Agreed about the 3rd brake light. As you'll notice, I didn't even bother to install their bracket. I instead installed a Mopar relocation bracket. As far as noise in the cold goes, I can't say that I have any and it's been down in the 20's here.

    I installed the Evo tire carrier. First thing I'll say is that it comes with shims for the hinges that bolt inside the jeep so you can align your bolt holes as needed. In my case I taped and shimmed the door (with wood wedges) and I needed to use both shims on the bottom bracket to get it to sit higher/ align with the holes. After installing the tire and testing it out, it's pretty obvious to me that the door settles downward when opened. This creates a fairly hard close as it's coming to the jeep a little low every time. Everything is snug so it seems like I need even more shimming on the lower bracket. The shims given were at least 1/8" stacked up so it looks like i might need a 1/4" total of shimming on the lower hinge. This leads to me to believe that either you all should start off with the Carrier sitting a little higher than the tailgate bolt holes or maybe I just have a tire carrier that's a little off. Another comment i will share is that the spacers when bolting the hinges to the tailgate don't cover up all of where the existing one was. This leaves a little bare metal. This is not too big of a deal for me but some of you might care. I'm sure some touch-up paint could fix it up good enough. If you look hard at the end of the video you can see what I'm talking about. It shows up more visible on my Jeep because it's red.

  • @okanaganoverlanding2912

    I just installed my Evo carrier today and I used one shim on the lower hinge. With the tire, the tailgate closed perfectly. After the tire was added, it dropped on the open side - probably between 1/8 - 1/4". I adjusted the door catch, but that's not the solution. I'm not looking forward to trying to get that second hinge spacer on, especially as I know it won't be enough. Any suggestions on how to slide that 2nd spacer in with out un-installing the carrier? I'm actually thinking I may loosen all the bolts that attach the carrier to the tailgate surface (leave all th thing bolts tight) and lift up on the tailgate with the hope that there is a little play where those 12 bolts pass thru and then tightening them in that new slightly changed position???? fingers crossed!! As for the bare metal showing - I have that too, it sucks - but I will paint it with touch up paint. The camera feels a little exposed and I'm not crazy about the 3rd brake light holder. I have an amazon LED circle coming next week that goes behind the wheel. Lastly, the gaps left where the hinges pass thru are ugly. Need to figure out if they bother me enough to come up with a fix.

Also did EVO provide anything to cover up the bare metal spots on the tailgate under the hinge? Those spacers they provided leaves those little corners showing bare metal. I'm not sure if the outer sheet is alum or steel(i thought the inside was a mag skeleton for strength). Always loved evo products but those hinges look cheap and loose :( As always...great video! Hi Wayalife😁. Great video. I've been contemplating for weeks on what to use to mount my spare tire 35s ( approx. 96lbs) on my 2018 JL and still keep my camera. Right now my spare does not clear the bumper. I've seen the EVO but I'm not a big fan of it visually for what I want. I don't want a bumper mount either for reasons you have mentioned in other videos. I've been recommended the Mopar reinforcement kit (plate). And getting a relocation bracket to raise the mount. Also, I've been told the RC relocation bracket should be good enough as well (no Mopar reinforcement plate needed). So basically I'm all over the place on what to get. I don't rock crawl .....just light off road and every day use. I would love to hear your opinion. Thanks

  • @wayalife

    @wayalife

    5 жыл бұрын

    What I would recommend is that you do in fact give the Mopar tire carrier a look. It should address what you need and do it well. I would NOT recommend that you install an RC relocation bracket by itself. It will cause your spare to act as a lever and will rock your tailgate. This will be something you can hear when driving over bumps.

    EVO has a new powder coater and the problems they've had have been fixed. Of course, if you're still concerned, you can always order it in bare steel and then have it powder coated locally. I did this with their rocker guards and it came up to being a bit less in the long run. As far as the camera goes, I just cut out the factory housing and made it work.

However, I didn't add anything between the carrier and the door for protection against rubs, paint scratches etc. Are you concerned about that at all? (The carrier against your painted door?) Thought of taking mine off just enough to put something between in hopes of minimizing scratches. Thanks and great vid!

    I would have like to have seen loctite or nylon nuts to be sure nothing comes lose, especially the ones you can't access after install. also, would it be worth painting the spots where the factory hinge came off the tailgate since there is no paint seal there after you remove the hinge? It might look great, but I can see the gate drop half inch or more when you open it...the carrier is doing nothing to hold the weight of the tire, its all on the latch. I hope you can adjust it. if not, its going to cause you problems down the road. Thanks for sharing.

  • @wayalife

    @wayalife

    5 жыл бұрын

    Nothing is stopping you from using locktite. As far the spots go, the skin of the tailgate is aluminum and I can assure you that you're not looking at raw metal. Even if it were, it's not like it's gonna rust. Regarding the drop, EVO now provides shims to correct for it. That being said, I was able to correct it by adding some preload to the tailgate.

  • @wayalife

    @wayalife

    5 жыл бұрын

    Nope. Tried that on our TJ and our JK with multiple different bumper tire carriers. If all you do is rock crawl, it's a good solution but if you like to drive hard and fast across the desert, they tend to allow for too much movement and this causes the spare to bang into the tailgate. In addition to being noisy, we've seen more than a few break over time. Of course, this is to say nothing about how heavy they are - most weigh in close to 200 lbs and that's way too much weight for us especially just to carry a spare. Now, is this EVO tire carrier the best solution? Not for us but it's the best one available at this time. We'd rather run what we have on Moby as that has proven to do the best job for us.

    You're in luck! With 35" tires, I would recommend that you just run a 2.5"-3" lift at MOST. Anything more will be way too much and in addition to throwing off your center of gravity, you'll have to address a LOT more thing such as drive shafts, control arms and steering components. To give you an idea of things, I run about 3.5" of lift on my JK and run 40" tires. Granted, I have trimmed my fenders to make this possible but that you should give you some ideas on things. As far as lifts go, I've run TeraFlex in the past and can tell you that their 3" coils will yield over 4" of lift. Also, their coils are about the harshest I've ridden on but then, ride quality is 100% subjective and if you're into that, maybe you'll like them. As far as their Falcon shocks go, I've seen too many break at the bar pins and leak to ever want them. Mopar makes a good kit but again, that's a LOT of lift for just 35's.
