Jeep CJ7 at the Gorge (Learning to wheel a...)

When you learn to wheel in a lifted automatic Wrangler JKU with brake lock diff traction control, it's quite the adjustment switching to a fully analog 1977 Jeep CJ7 with 4 speed manual transmission, gobs of power (from the SBC V8), leaf springs and air lockers.
Here's a recap of an awesome spring run with a nicely upgraded Jeep TJ at the lead, the beastly CJ putting on a show in the middle, and the minivan of Jeeps a 4 door Wrangler at the back of the pack.

    Great day wheeling. Really liked that CJ-7, and the young lady knows how to use it 👍

    There's something about wheeling that's just so much fun.

    Looks like a fun area to play in. Nice CJ. If you don't mind a bit of constructive criticism based on what I saw, there's way too much reliance on brakes in the descents. Those Jeeps were not in the correct gear for that sort of thing. You should just be able to put it in the lowest available gear (i.e., 4Low and 1st or 2nd gear) and crawl down those boulders easily w/o touching the brake pedal.

    Will give it a try this year, but this was the first time we used this CJ off-road. Might be doable with the manual and better crawl ratio in the CJ (64:1), but definitely not possible in other Jeeps we have (automatics with 30-40:1 crawl in 4L and first gear).

    @@EricCantin Yeah, give it a try. It's just called "engine braking". Old technique. With the CJ you should be able to crawl down nice and slowly, more evenly paced, with better control. And the front or rear tires can't skid on you, unless they're ALL going to skid! In which case, you shouldn't have tried going down that one. LOL I can't say about newer 4x4s. I know that some of them have fancy things like "Crawl Mode" etc. And I don't know about driving an Automatic offroad. Never owned one. But I know people who swear by them for fourwheeling.

    Crawl control modulates the brakes. I can do a better job modulating the brakes than the computer. All about trying, learning and hopefully improving with minimal collateral damage.

    @@EricCantin Modulates throttle too, from what I understand. At least with the Toyota systems. So you don't need to touch the pedals at all while in one of the CM settings. But I agree, it's another mod con. For people who are really green or don't want to bother to develop the basic skills. Have fun! It's a great pass time. FWIW, I just have an International Scout II. It's as analog as your CJ.

    It sure is! This is one of the local trails that we learned how to wheel (and many others as well). Its located near Calabogie, Ontario. Highly recommend exploring it with someone that knows the trail, since there are a few traps waiting for prey. Here's a spot where we've unstuck 3 Jeeps in 2020. kzread.info/dash/bejne/qaGiscGsfqe4iKg.html

    Did you do an axle conversion on the '77? Those axles look a little wider than stock unless the wheel width and spacing is messing with me.

  • @EricCantin

    @EricCantin

    It has upgraded axles, and 10”wide wheels with different backspacing. The tire track is narrower than most CJ-YJ-TJs around here, so the turning radius isn’t that great (or the tires would rub the frame). We just pick our lines like we would with our 4 door Wranglers and that usually works.

    Keep in mind in case u have a frankinstein jeep, 1982 was first year for 4 inch wider trac in rear, 3 inch wider in front. Just tore the rotten 1981 nt off my cj, with some 1982 cj8 axles.

    I realized the total advance RPM for our configuration was too high at 2500. Been slowly dropping it. Currently at 2100rpm and plan to drop it another 100rpm next time we use it. That really helped it run cooler at speed (engine at +/- 2000rpm at highway speeds).

    No tailgate? Fiberglass? Is it flimsy? How hard is it to install and hoe much reenforcing was needed to make it structural like the steel if not better? Debateing a fiberglass swap on mine, steel is pretty bad so either buying new tub and seem sealing the shit outa it or going glass, only all the glass omes ive seen in person have been trash, but they cant all be that bad.

    @@EricCantin by anychance do you know what brand it is? I have one. But. I think its a chinese one from the early 90s and its flimsy as hell. Will need to be renforced with lots of steel. Ive heard shell valley ones are pretty good aswell as the 4 wheel drive hardware ones that are no longer sold. But reguardless i will still have to tie my roll bar into the frame

    All I remember is it was installed over a decade ago. It came with a few binders full of receipts, but haven’t unpacked them since we moved. Haven’t spotted a tag on it while doing various work on it.
