Jeep Camping Overland Style - Remote Oregon High Desert Trip - Pt 1

Jeep Camping Overland Style - Remote Oregon High Desert Trip - Pt 1
Another overland car camping adventure in the Jeep Wrangler JKU Rubicon. In this trip I headed out to a remote area of the Central Oregon High Desert to explore some country I've never been in before. Along the way I show some of my Jeep Car Camping set up, gear used, and sights and scenery along the way.
Hope you all enjoy!
Casey

You picked the right vehicle for this, in a big Jeep guy, currently have a expedition built Toyota 4Runner , completely expedition ready but I miss my 4 door Rubicon's, 4:1 transfer case, electronic sway bar disconnect , front and rear electronic selectable locking differentials and lower axle gear ratio. I was in Moab a few weeks ago hitting some "difficult" rated 4x4 trails and am always amazed at what the Rubicon's will do in even "stock" form. My 4Runner was bunged up by a mechanic getting it ready for Moab so I had to rent a rubicon for the trip and I really miss my rubicon's! Even with 4.88 gears, TRD selectable rear locking diff, body armor , warn winch etc, it jsut doesn't compare to the rubicon. I'm actually looking at selling it and getting another Rubicon to build into an expedition rig, either that or doing a Dodge Ram power wagon which is a rubicon in truck format and doing a 4 season camper . Haven't decided but watching your videos and starting a divorce , I think it's time to get out in the wilderness and do some "healing". I love 4 wheeling , have my whole 40 year life and love camping if I can have se creature comforts like a toilet and decent bed and shelter so with all the options with rooftop tents, 4 season campers , expedition motor homes etc I really feel like it's what I need to do. Work during the week and camp weekends. I've been watching your videos for a few weeks now and just feels like that's what I need to be doing to get through this difficult transition. Thanks for posting them, they help people more than you'd think. I live 2 hours north or Moab, Utah , so a lot of potential. But seems like what I need to be doing. What state are you located in, seems like slot of your adventures are in similar lands to where I live. One more question, are you married? Is this a solo venture that your wife if ok with regularly or are you single and role with the wind? Just trying to imagine my life in the direction it's unfolding. Thanks again. 👍 be safe and carry on!

Hello my friend. Yes the Rubicon has been an absolutely fantastic vehicle for my adventures. I just got back from another trip that was a brutal 150 miles off road on some rough trails. A lot of it was at under 5 miles an hour. One day we spent 5 hours going about 12 miles. I”m fairly newly single/divorced as well. And for sure I’m going out more than ever. I’m doing exactly what you mentioned. Working during the week and heading out camping and adventuring on the weekends and it’s exactly what I need to be doing during all this. My wife was pretty good about me going on my adventures but she was never interested in participating. I think over time it became one of the things that made us feel like we probably weren’t the best fit for each-other. Cheers my friend. Hope you get start getting out there more!

Coyote Works thankyou for the reply, I'm a fan for sure. Agreed and excited to get it there, been a long time but think it's where my head and heart needs to breath for a bit. You ought to come out utah way and do some exploring in Moab, amazing Jeep trails and endless amounts of exploring and trails to your hearts content. 👍 love your videos and when things get to busy and cluttered with messy garbage thoughts I love to turn your videos on and jsut relax like I'm out there too away from the chaos. Thanks and be safe! Look forward to more . 👍 thanks also for the tips, I'll be starting from scratch when I start again and haven't done overlanding even tho I have a vehicle so appreciate all the insites and tips!

I appreciate your stone placement to the side of the road, just as the pioneers there did. Your choice of crab salad, potato salad, and cheese sausage made my mouth water. I've found that sweet potatoes (not yams), placed in foil, into the coals yields not only tasty fiber and carbohydrates, but a wonderful dessert! . Thank you for the grand ride-along.

I appreciate you letting me know. I think there is some level of control I have over where the ads are placed. Thanks for your patience with them. I sincerely appreciate it. Cheers!

Coyote Works if memory serves me correct, there is a "north side" and a "south side" separated by the post/Paulina highway. On the south side is where the headwaters of the south fork are next to the "headquarters" are. I was able to do some fishing out there. We lived on the north side where my dad overwatched that side. TONS of country.

Thank you! Yes my Jeep has front and rear locking differentials, front disconnecting sway bars, heavy duty front and rear axles, etc. I plan on adding a small lift and a bit larger tires at some point as well. But as it’s equipped it’s a pretty capable off road rig. I also want to add a winch and some additional external fuel storage. Just have to save my pennies ;-)

Rarely gets below freezing warm weather stretches way longer into the season lots of forest service roads zigzagging the mountains all the way to the coast... No waiting for snow to melt in upper elevations just all around good weather in grants pass... Found that Central Oregon only averaged about 12 to 16 weeks out of the entire year where it was really nice out and that was over run with wild fires.. After living in every corner from grants pass to st Helens to central Oregon and everything in between decided southern Oregon's weather and environment was best to set roots .. Even my mom is leaving everything behind to move here after visiting throughout the year... Will miss it but not the constant cold and neg 20 screw that..

Ha! Not silly. And believe it or not you’re not the first one to ask. I usually wear the Wrangler Riggs workwear cargo pants. They come in two versions. One is made out of a heavier cotton/canvas type fabric and the other is made out of a cotton/poly ripstop. Usually I run the ripstop ones. Great pants and they don’t get holes burned in them from sparks from the fire. Like you said, just simple, functional, cargo pants. Cheers!

That’s a possibility. But it also could have been from one of the ranch hands camping out there to check on cattle. It almost seemed like a site that someone uses a few times a year. And it isn’t the best country for hunting so I’m thinking it’s more likely a cow camp. Cheers!

I have a 2014 Sahara Unlimited that I may trade In for a 2018 and start some jeep camping which I have NEVER done, was thinking of small RV but you have inspired me to go this route, sometimes less is more, just me and my 2 dogs. Link for that tent you have please, also can it be removed easily to be stored after a week long of camping? I don’t want to leave it up on my roof when not out in the trails if you know what I mean.

Awesome my friend. I definitely think less is more when it comes to camping. Going simple makes it a lot more fun and keeps you really mobile. For me I want to spend as little time as possible setting up camp, tearing down, cleaning up when I get home, etc. It’s surprising how little you need to be comfortable and have a great time out there! Tent link is... www.gofsr.com . Mine is the M55 Adventure Series. And yes it’s really easy to take the tent off the rack and store it in the garage. I hardly ever do because I’m using it so frequently but occasionally I do if I’m going on a longer highway trip in my Jeep. Cheers!

MARKLINMAN1 don't mean to butt in your conversation, but as one that's owned quite a few expedition vehicles from multiple auto manuf.'s, let me just say as with this expeditioner , and where you have owned a Sahara, if you are upgrading, and going to be doing more trails and expedition type camping wheeling etc I'd advise going Jeep Wrangler "Rubicon" the Rubicon as with this KZread has been voted best off-road 4x4 , it has front AND rear selectable electronic locking differentials, a 4:1 rocktrac transfer case, electronic sway bar disconnect , along with rock sliders, a beefier suspension set up and lower axle gear ratio , not to mention it has FRONT AND REAT Dana 44 axles , bigger and stronger . Point is for off roaring especially if you will be doing solo vehicle trips the Rubicon is a tank and will go virtually anywhere any vehicles can go. The off-road lockers and all that will get you places you never dreamed of and keep you out of trouble: the Sahara is a great platform but has no lockers front or rear, jsut a limited slip in the rear, a Dana 35 up front which isn't super strong . 3.73 axle ration which is a bit high. They are amazing off-roaders compared to other suvs but if you already have one and are upgrading to do more wheeling and expedition camping the Rubicon is 100% hands down the way to go! Put it this way, I have a Toyota 4Runner fully built for expedition camping with over $20,000 in upgrades , rear selectable locker, lift, winch, body armor etc etc the problem is I've owned a Rubicon in the past, many actually and this Toyota while reliable, does NOT compare to my rubicon's. so im selling and going back to a rubicon or possibly a dodge powerwagon truck which is jsut chryslers truck version of the Rubicon with all the same off-road goodies. You won't be dispointed gong Rubicon route I assure you. I wa at Easter jeep safari in Moab utah this year and the non Rubicon jeeps often had to take obstacle bypasses that the rubicon's walk right up. Jna. Real life off-road situation it can mean your life , in a bad situation where you are stuck, a Rubicon will get you home safe. Casey is smart owning one, and I don't worry for a second about him with his knowledge but also driving a Rubicon. Jsut my .02 cents . 👍

  • @CoyoteWorks01

They seem to work great for a lot of guys. I don’t really need one since I can fit all the gear I need and then some into my Jeep. But they are an interesting option. I like the concept of being able to set up your camp, then drive away in your vehicle to explore if you want. The only way I can do that is if I collapse my rooftop tent. Freespirit has offered several times to let me use one of their trailers for a trip. I’m thinking I’ll do it one of these times just to try out that kind of a set up. Next weekend I”m going on a trip with a guy who will be using his trailer set up. I’ll be doing a video of the trip so you can check out how he sets his all up. Cheers!
