I have a theory about that: Palpatine used most of the dark side to mask and cloud everyone around him. Now that he’s been deformed, killed a Jedi and issued the order to kill all Jedi and create the empire; there’s no point on using the force to hide in plain sight. He can flagrantly show who he is now.

God I miss these lightsabers the current design looks sucky in comparison to the prequels heck even the original trilogy sabers looked awful in comparison

the intention was to show how powerful Palpatine was and that Mace had to draw upon the dark side as well in order to stand against him.
