This looks so awesome. But re some of the written cards in the trailer.....a king taking a mistress wouldn't have really scandalized a nation. It was kind of thought like "oh well he's appointed by God, and he's also a man, therefore who are we to object?". Papers might have reported on it, but Kings taking mistresses or kept men was extremely common and tolerated. Jeanne Du Barry was an unusual choice, but absolutely not the first commoner to be selected as a royal mistress (Madame Pompadour, etc). Plus, being the king's Mistress was a pretty sweet gig if you could get it. Tons of perks, swag, money, properties, and you had a lot of influence over the king's decisions, without the job of having to represent the state everywhere and produce an heir that might have webbed feet due to inbreeding.

This looks so awesome. But re some of the written cards in the trailer.....a king taking a mistress wouldn't have really scandalized a nation. It was kind of thought like "oh well he's appointed by God, and he's also a man, therefore who are we to object?". Papers might have reported on it, but Kings taking mistresses or kept men was extremely common and tolerated. Jeanne Du Barry was an unusual choice, but absolutely not the first commoner to be selected as a royal mistress (Madame Pompadour, etc). Plus, being the king's Mistress was a pretty sweet gig if you could get it. Tons of perks, swag, money, properties, and you had a lot of influence over the king's decisions, without the job of having to represent the state everywhere and produce an heir that might have webbed feet due to inbreeding.

You're right, that's not what was scandalous; she refused to follow the rules, right from the start she broke the rules of court, not only looking at the king in the eye, at first meeting, but smiling at him 😱 especially when she was just a commoner who was born out of wedlock 🤯 then she wasn't just his mistress but kept by his side, whispering in his ear. The real Jeanne du Barry was the illegitimate daughter of a common seamstress who used her intelligence and sexuality to rise within the ranks of high society, eventually becoming the favored courtesan of King Loius XV.
