With all due respect to Michael Douglas, he is one of my favourites, I think no one can top Mr Tom Wilkinson as Franklin, another one of my favourites.

I met him and his wife, they were staying in a hotel in London, I worked there at the time. Funny story, Catherine (Who by the way is gorgeous in real life as well) ordered a drink with me on the phone line, I took everything down and handed the order to my boss. The drink was a Margarita, which is fucking funny, because, they sent up a pizza. she rang me down and said what the hell is this a joke? I apologized profusely, got the damn drinks order up and got tipped. I remember the tired sigh from her, and apologized for the miscommunication. She knew it was my boss being an idiot. But I give her credit, she did have a sense of humour about it.

Yeah. It does look over exergerated though. I am a fan of American history. Yeah most of the continental congress was in danger of being killed. But just like Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin spent a good deal of time in France. Matter of fact. The play "Hamilton" depicts Jefferson as the one whowas hanging around in france during the revolutionary war. When in fact Benjamin franklin spent a great deal of time in france during the revolutionary war. Jefferson spent time in franch before the war not during the war. They actually said Franklin had a great deal of mistresses in France. In fact one of the reason congress sent Franklin to france as a diplomat was because he was already famous for figuring out that metal can be used as a conductor for electricity. So he was already famouse for the invention of the lightning rod being installed on every tall building in the western world and his history of journalism. Franklins life was the least in jeapordary because he was probably the most famous american politician in the western world during the time.

So, we're all in agreement that Tom Wilkinson's portrayal in John Adams is unbeatable. My question is, who they got to play Adams in this movie since Adams was for a time in France as well? Again, like with Wilkinson, Paul Giamatti slayed as Adams. While we're at it: Stephan Dillane as Thomas Jefferson, David Morse as Washington, and Laura Linney as Abigail Adams. All of them, untouchable, still interested in seeing this movie though.

We have a show in John Adams, a musical for Hamilton, and now a show for Ben Franklin, Fingers crossed we one day get a 300-style semi-accurate films for George Washington

Oh yeah. Franklin was born for this.

We need more movies about the Founding Fathers. The Revolutionary War and its many battles. The countless heroes and sacrifices made by those who settled and founded this great country that we and I as a 1st generation American enjoy. People need to now these names by heart and know the great culture from which this nations comes from. God Bless America!

Hope they don't mess this up... Ben Franklin is one of my all time favorite and important historical figures. His contributions to science, politics and society are profound.

LOL. I know, right? Can you believe these idiots are acting like this is anything other than a joke? Obviously it's an embarrassing vanity project; or else the script was so bad that every other actor passed on it. He was always a hack actor, he was ok, he was never anything incredible. These doofuses are acting like it's Orson Welles playing him. It certainly wasn't like hearing Paul Giamatti was playing John Adams, or Daniel Day Lewis playing Lincoln.

So hyped about this... Michael Douglas best interpretation ever, if it wasn't a series but an actual movie I would feel like it's worth an Oscar. Besides... Benjamin Franklin's story is a heck of a story that really needed to get to the cinema theatres. Many Americans should watch this and remember how Europe has been important in the USA making before the US armies did what they did to end WWII. Our bond is too much important to let it down.

I’m looking forward to this! Ben Franklin was definitely a complicated guy and bit of a playboy and France wasn’t too keen on going to war with England who they lost to in their last war especially for the colonies that were just at the beginnings of trying to develop into a country.

Agreed 10000%. The answer is one of two reasons: 1.) it's yet another Michael Douglas vanity project (he's always been a producer, even before he was an actor, that's what he's best at. Or.....2.) Every other actor passed on it, the script was so bad. (or both)

I never understand why these supposedly historic movies have 1770's colonists with american accents. They were British, many of them were born in England

48 of the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence were born in the American colonies. However, the accent was MUCH different than than it is now. We don't know exactly what it was, but it certainly wasn't anywhere close to Michael Douglas's 20th century accent.

@@georgebarnhill660 But they wouldn't sound "British" in the way that we think of a British accent today. The British themselves hadn't yet developed the RP accent. Both colonial Americans and the Brits at the time would have sounded different than they do today. My favorite take on it is Abe Woodhull's accent on the TV show TURN.

Michael Douglas feels like your favorite uncle you only see every once and a while. Dude's usually only getting supporting actor roles.

Lol. Not my favorite uncle, maybe yours. If the script was good, believe me, they'd have someone else playing Benjamin Franklin. They got Michael Douglas because it obviously sucks. It's a movie made for and by imbeciles. (Just so you know).

I read that Ben Franklin was so popular in France that a commode chair was found with a picture of is face in the bowl!! Now, is that flattering or what?!!!

@yellowstoneloyal8186 the cinematography is great Vanessa Kirby and Joaquin Phoenix make great performances. But the writing and skirting around a lot of important events make it disappointing if you are a history buff.

The BBC would have done it for sure.

I hope this will be treated with the same respect and care the HBO John Adams series was, but sadly, I know that series was made in a different era. This will likely be inaccurate, lame, and gay.

Ohh 100% You can see the downgrade in quality and respect for the character. It's meant to bring it down and lift the next "gender" at the expense of us. Yea I dont think so.

Michael Douglas is awesome. The only thing I've seen him in is Romancing the Stone.

My mind is blown I love Mr Franklin he is one of my heros. Douglas as Franklin is such a crazy and amazing choice. I wish Tom Wilkerson could of been of alive to make a cameo possible as Mr Franklins Father

That may be true, however England didn’t have nuclear weapons aimed at both France and the United States with a King who openly warned them that he would use them if provoked too much. It’s amazing to me that nobody defending Ukraine’s side seems the least bit concerned about that fact.

Wow, Michael Douglas looks painfully bad in this role. He seems to have none of the charisma and humour of Franklin.

Although I totally agree with those saying that Douglas was miscast, if he brings draws in more people (especially the younger crowd) to get some American history they would not otherwise have received, I support this movie. The caveat being: IF the movie is historically accurate (at least to a large degree).
