Michael Douglas on "Franklin," and playing a founding father

He was the son of actors, but Michael Douglas says he was reluctant to follow in the deep footsteps of his father, Kirk Douglas. But as an Oscar-winning producer and performer, Michael has earned his own legendary status. He now stars as the revolutionary figure Benjamin Franklin in the Apple TV+ series "Franklin." He tells correspondent Mo Rocca that the show's story, about the founding father's efforts to save a burgeoning democracy, is timely given today's dangerous political climate.

Thanks, Michael, and whoever else is responsible for bringing this important fore father, Mr. Franklin, to the forefront! This nation’s fore parents weren’t perfect, but they got a whole lot right! Our US Constitution and our Bill of Rights were, and still are, pretty darn radical! Let’s make sure we remember that and honor them by voting! 🌊🇺🇸💙

Michael Douglas is the 'spitting' image of his father. They could have been twins! There is a saying that to see what we will look like when we get old is to look at our parents. That is so true in my case as well. I look just like my mother when she was in her 70's, which is my age now. BTW, MD is a superb actor!

I saw Michael Douglas in April 1987 filming at the 21 club on 52nd street in New York which unfortunately is now gone filming Wall Street. When I saw him exit the trailers and walking to the set, he looked like a million bucks. I knew that movie was going to be great just by the way he dressed for the part. I recommend two underrated movies he did because nobody talks about them and he was great in. 1989’s Black Rain and 1996’s The Game. Two terrific movies to watch on a Saturday night.

Benjamin Franklin is my favorite founding father. While he owned slaves occasionally and ran "Runaway" ads in his paper, by 1750, he had no slaves and became an abolitionist, arguing against slavery. He was 70 years old in 1776, and had many careers by the time he became a statesman and diplomat. He proved you're never too old to learn or try domething new. It ain't over 'til it's over. He died in 1790, having live 5 lifetimes in his 84 years.

Of all the characters you're going to play while using the misnomer "democracy" (4:22), Ben Franklin should not be him. When a woman accosted Mr. Franklin outside the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia (1787) and asked him, "What kind of government have you given us, Franklin famously replied "A REPUBLIC, if you can keep it..." He did NOT say, "A democracy, if you can keep it..."

MD has shown great instincts re: choosing films to produce and/or be in. Also, he can be counted on to give excellent performances.
