One of my favorite episodes was with the hillbillies in the bar. That was brilliant. I also enjoyed when Jean Smart met her fiancé Bill’s mother and aunt while staying at Bill’s family home. That was lovely. Oh and lastly, I like the one where Jean is a new mother or several months pregnant (can’t remember), and she fell asleep at an appointment and said her pantyhose were down to her knees and she was walking like John Wayne. 😂 Oh wait one more - when she and Mary Jo are looking for a missing set of pearls and frantically rooting through the salad bar and Charlene puts her hand in the canister of dressing and says to the confused waiter “Is this French or thousand island?” 😂

My favorite episode will always be the one where Julia stands up for Suzanne during her reunion. You could feel the love she had for her sister in that episode through her words. Will always remember her telling Suzanne that it doesn’t matter what anyone thinks of you because most people forget you ten minutes after you die, anyway. I have never forgotten that, and still live by it. Love Jean Smart and all the women that made this show the classic that it now is. Miss those days.

I think my favorite episode was titled, "Charlene Quits Her Church". Julia has been nominated to sing the closing hymn for a city-wide choir production--it happens to be "How Great Thou Art" and she doesn't know if she'll be able to hit the high notes. in the meantime, Charlene is trying to convince her pastor that women should be allowed to be preachers and he doesn't agree. The women get together for a dinner and Bernice, their elderly friend who has a little, off most times asks to attend. For every scripture the minister comes up with to prove women should just take a back seat, Bernice throws another Biblical quote back at him that disputes it. The pastor remains unconvinced, and Charlene resigns from her Church. Discouraged, she returns to the office to find Julia having an anxiety attack over her solo, but Charlene explains what she just did and reminds Julia how important it is for women to be represented. Julia gives one of the most moving performances ever and hits that impossible high note that had frightened her. It makes me cry every time I watch it. Jean Smart is an amazing actress.

Oh I LOVE this SO much!! I grew up watching Designing Women on homemade vhs tapes with my wonderful grandmother at her house every time I visited her and we’d just laugh and laugh! Plus, it was the FIRST show she introduced me to that dealt with women’s issues at a time that so great did! Now I’ve seen more Golden Girls and Maude, of course, and all were classics but Designing Women holds a special place in my heart because of my grandmother! ❤️❤️ I really loved how all the shows tackled women’s health like Dorothy telling off that former doctor that dismissed her in that now ICONIC scene from Golden Girls and the way Julie AND Suzanne supported Charlene when she was going through her Breast Cancer scare and that awful doctor who was telling her to “just come back in 6 months, it’s probably nothing and just let ME worry about it” and other bs like that dismissed Charlene from his practice for daring to ask for a referral for a second opinion and how Julia got his name, realized he was the SAME doctor that dismissed her cousin’s concerns who died from HIS horrible treatment of not listening to her about the lump on her breast sooner and how Julia went down to that office to tear him a new one AND let him know he was being reported to the state medical board!! 👏🏻👏🏻 That was definitely ICONIC too!! And I also LOVED when Charlene and Julia were speaking out against the Southern Baptists’ outdated views on how “women shouldn’t become Pastors and dead the Gospel!” 😠😠 It was SO emotional for Charlene to leave her church and pastor that had been there for her for years but she did it BECAUSE they wouldn’t support women becoming pastors! And when he tried to say, “I don’t think it’s up to us to question God’s wisdom.” and Charlene goes, “I’m not. I’m questioning YOURS!” Yessss!! LOVED IT!! 👏🏻👏🏻 Or when Bernice can quote more Scripture than another man who didn’t think women should become pastors and also quoted the ORIGINAL translations and pointed out how many versions of The Bible had been “translated” by men of a certain time period who clearly thought little of women and it left the guy speechless until the audience was roaring with thunderous applause! 🎉🎉

Not to mention the classic “The Nights Went Out In Georgia” scene or the hilarious nudist colony episode where they don’t know where to look and Mary Jo says, “Off the top of my head, I’m thinking anything wicker will be a bad idea!” 😆😆 Obviously I never saw that one until I was an adult, but now it’s one of my favorites! Or when Mary Jo got robbed and they took a self defense class together and the next year, she saw the mugger as a waiter at a kid’s pizza place and struggled with so much PTSD as she tried to be certain before turning him in etc. Or when Mary Jo was advocating safe sex be taught in sex Ed class instead of just abstinence and they were calling her “The Condom Mom” or something like that. Or when they were working with a young friend if they’d who was a man who got AIDS from a transfusion and they didn’t treat him any differently and a woman Julia had known a long time as their boys went to school together jumped to the con kid him that he got AIDS because he was gay (he was gay but that had nothing to do with how he got AIDS and even if it had, he and anyone else going through such horrible things did NOT deserved to shunned and blamed that way!! 😡😡 And that awful woman actually said as far as SHE was concerned he was “being punished for being sinful” and stupid, hate-filled, ignorant bs like that and Julia went into one of her famous speeches before she sent that woman packing! Oh it was a brilliantly done scene! They handled such difficult topics SO WELL!! And they even had Suzanne stand up for Anthony in that one where they got stuck in the blizzard on the way to St. Louis and that horrible hotel owner jumped to the conclusion that they were an “unmarried inter racial couple” and treated them so terribly, wanting to throw them out in the middle of that blizzard?! Or when Suzanne went back to her high school reunion and overheard all those catty women in the bathroom fiddling and sniggering cruelly shoot her weight gain and it was SUZANNE’S turn to make a speech up on that stage when she was voted “Most Changed” or something but they meant it as a dig and she spoke passionately and seriously upon the subject of her weight and the bullies! Oh it’s one of the countless speeches that give me goosebumps and as much as I love Julia’s rants, I LOVE that they had SUZANNE standing up for herself and having the speech that time! 👏🏻👏🏻 Or when Charlene figured out her cousins was being hit by her husband and they all talked to her and gave her and her daughters and the baby she was expecting a safe place to get away from him! Yes, watching it now as an older adult, I do see some of the issues with the that episode like Suzanne doing black face even no one else was for their part of the talent show and how it ended with the cousin and girls getting there with their bags like it was all going to be OK, when we certainly know THAT cannot be resolved in a 30 minute sit com! But still, they were one of the first shows to TALK about domestic violence, breast cancer, dismissive male doctors, menopause, weight, religious men in power not wanting to share that power with women, full term wit bing moms turning on moms that did not have a job outside of the home or “only” worked part time, how hard it was to get child support on time from school scumbag like Ted that I’m still amazed Scott Bakula played so convincingly when I see those episodes now as an adult, being a single mom and working and raising kids after a divorce or becoming a widow and all the things Anthony went through! They did a heck of a job addressing all sorts of issues on this show with a mixture of serious and thought provoking moments and side splittingly hilarious moments too! And itis STILL one of my favorite, nostalgia, feel good shows of my childhood and always makes me think harder, smile, laugh AND think of those fun memories with my grandma! 😃😃

I love the one Kelly is talking about, but I love the one where they have a New Years Eve Party. They had the Christmas tree still decorated and Jean Smart's ( Charlene's ) dress was so gorgeous...!! They all had the most beautiful clothes that they wore on the show, but that black dress she was wearing with the red underneath it at the bottom of dress was absolutely gorgeous....!!❤ There's so many other episodes I loved too. It will always be one of my favorite shows. ❤❤❤❤ I met Gerald McRainy ( Dash , Suzanne's boy friend and Delta's husband in real life ) and I got an autographrf picture of him one time at a car show in Atlanta. It was back in the late 80's and I was only about 16 or 17 at the time. I believe Chuck Berry or Little Richard was there too.

The episode where Julia was trying to let loose, so she would order these sultry outfits and go off and sing at a piano bar - upon speculation, Charlene says: "...what if she's developed a split personality and she doesn't even know it. I mean c'mon, don't you people watch 'One Life to Live'?!" That, and the celebrity guardian angel is when I knew Charlene was my character, lol

She's kind of like Laurie Metcalf. All raw TALENT while quietly mastering... actually killing it (their craft) decade after decade. Nothing pretentious, high maintenance diva-eaque, attention seeking. All about the quality*work. You'd never know by how UN- assuming she is she's been sweeping every major acting award. I also love it when they OWN & embrace their beginnings (early work that put them on the map) vs blacklisting it, or being dismissive at best.

I wish Jean Smart, Delta Burke, and Annie Potts (as Meemaw) would do a "Designing Women" reunion in the Big Bang Theory franchise. They would be part of an episode plot or subplot, and the characters would be watching "Designing Women" making tongue in cheek comments of the show and actors/characters during the tag.
