JC PENNEY PINTO CB Radio First Turn On in OVER 20 YEARS Did it Smoke

Ғылым және технология

JCPenney Pinto 23 Channel Base Station #cb #cbradio AM CB Radio Base Station. This radio has been in indoor storage since 2002. The Pinto has a decent receiver, it is fairly quiet, good channel rejection and the audio quality is good. The transmitter section gives very good modulation but RF power is a bit weak and does not provide much forward swing. I believe this is due to the radios modulation limiting circuit. Even though the modulation limiting circuit cuts the radios audio back it still has a great sounding transmitter section. ( with the stock mic ) the Pinto's limiter could be removed for more punch and swing however I will let the next owner do the mods.
My plan is to make the radio spec out as close to factory as the day it was made.

I just have a soft spot for JC Penney radios... just because the first radio I ever had was the mobile 23 channel. Enjoyed it.

Do you know any detailed information about a JC Penney CB Model No. 6211/Catalog No. 981-6331? I have one and can’t find any info on it

SAMS manual #100👍 I had this same radio a year or 2 ago. Previous owner had built a wood cover for it and also added 2 toggle switches with crystals on them to add extra channels. Thanks for the video!

Ok, some rules of thumb for aspiring radio restorers: Solid state radios rarely blow up capacitors when they are powered up. They are more insidious, failing gradually and in unexpected ways. Tube radios do blow up. This is because after decades of closet sitting they suddenly have 300 volts or more applied to them. I have a current monitoring power supply and I connect it to the filter capacitors and leave it sit for a few hours. This gives the capacitor a chance to reform without the stress of high voltage. I haven't blown one up since I started doing that. This radio, like a lot of them, powers up the power supply as soon as it's plugged in. The on-off switch only disconnects the DC side of the supply, so unless you have to, unplug it before you open it up. Crap happens. This radio, like so many AM radios, uses the 37/10 MHz crystal scheme. Six 37 MHz crystals, four 10 MHz crystals for receive and four 10 MHz crystals for transmit gives you the 23 channels. Parts radios are very good sources of crystals.

I had an a.m. only radio back in the old days because I was poor and my teacher gave me a Metrotek Pacer II. It was a pretty good radio as far as I knew then. When people started going to the “uppers” I couldn’t afford a crystal for that, but I put in a capacitor on the variable receiver and allowed it to listen in on channel 30. It’s amazing how many of my “friends” would talk nicely to me on channel 5 and then go up to 30, where they were sure I couldn’t go, and badmouth me! When I finally put in a channel 30 transmit crystal, I sure did embarrass a bunch of people who were busy stabbing me in my back! Always be careful what you say!

I have the old mobile version of the Pinto. It still comes on, receives and transmits but I don’t know how aligned it is after all these years.

Bring back the adjustable ANL! That’s a cool idea. Using warm white LEDs would be cool to maintain the old school look but eliminate the heat of the old bulbs.

I'd spice it up a tad 390, put some l.e.d's in it. Is that a big ass filter cap in that rig???(black thingy in the power supply isle)😏👍

Yes Eric, the big "big black thingy" is a 4000mfd capacitor. I want to make the lights look stock, however I'm out of incandescent bulbs. Then I thought I would just install some white LEDs... Then I find that I'm out of those as well. I do have a bunch of blue ones.... NO! Cheers
