Ғылым және технология
A teardown and repair of the JBL Flip 3 portable bluetooth speaker.
I repair a broken USB charging plug and show you how!
The USB socket I used was from ebay. Just search for 'micro USB 4 vertical legs' and you'll see the parts.

Helped a poor soul out here today. Thanks so much
It's great to have people who are passionate about repairing gadgets, especially in today's culture of disposable electronics. I just got a brand new Flip 3 and stumbled upon this video. Nice, clear and interesting even to someone like me who doesn't do repairs.
almost made me cry, same has happened to my red one but i dont have any equpiment necessary for the repair, none the less beautiful repair man.

Same issue - job done. Thanks for taking the time to film and share :)
Excelente vídeo! Resolveu o meu problema. Fiz o reparo com a segurança da certeza de saber exatamente o que estava fazendo! Muito obrigado! Abraço!
Well done, thank you. Your video is amazing. Love the attention to detail. Liked!
Hey there, mate. You have no idea how thankful I am that you've got this video for me to find and watch! I exclusively purchased two of these Jbl Flip 3 not even a year ago through the biggest apple store here at the country I currently live. After 4 months or so when my guarantee period had already ended, I started to struggle to properly charge the speakers because of the connector--- its teeth were gradually getting damaged. I use many devices at home and they all have the same or similar charger , so I never really care which one corresponds to which. They all seem to charge all, plus I was told that it didn't matter, so I was good. Point is, after both charging connector were just too ruined to ever charge again, I took them to several places for them to be repaired, but most of them said that they couldn't do anything, and that this device is recycling to be used once and so I needed to buy new ones as last and only alternative... Now this video of yours I'll shut them up for being useless technicians to even try to find out the solution to this small problem. I'll be buying the USB charging on ebay for replacement and then I'll be taking the speakers to the stores again for evidence and demonstration very soon . Cheers!

Hey I have Jbl charge 3 and when I was charging it and pulling the charger out the micro usb teeth broke. Do you think what warranty can change it or is it like sort of my mistake and I will need to pay money for repair:) Waiting for answer. Hope to hear from you soon :)))

it' will be a common problem with charge 3 because of rubber cover, which presses down a usb cable. It would be wise to pushing it down with scotch tape or another kind. But I also just bending out the cover and prop up a speaker on it.

Thank you as well. I'm new to soldering and probably won't attempt it.
This was so satisfactory to watch! I don't know why, but you just made fixing devices my new obsession :))))
Thank you very much for posting this. The tip on how to remove the outer cloth cover was great, down hill from there! My son left ours in a cooler full of water and it was no longer working. Of course it had water in it after disassembling, but after hitting the control board with some electronic cleaner and some air, it turns on and appears to work properly! I'm going to leave it disassembled for a couple of days so the main area dries out, but there appears to be a reasonable chance that it's saved. Our model is newer and slightly different, but close enough that this was still extremely helpful.
Dude!! Great video. I wish I can have your skills and tools. My love my JB.
Fixed an issue with the buttons no longer responsive (case too tight) thanks to your vid. Cheers!
To those who have asked: Unfortunately we aren't set up to do repairs. We recommend taking it to a local electronics / mobile phone repairer and even showing them this video if they are unsure of what's involved. Good luck and thanks for the interest! :)

I DID THE SAME
Great instruction! And stil valid.. Mine dropped and sound was gone.. could connect and charge.. but not even the intro sound. Turned out to be the 1R5 block on the board, it was completely broken off but no further damage. When I pushed it back in place, tada sound was back. Bit of superglue and problem solved!
Wow man. I don’t have words to say. Really appreciate
Un fenómeno señor!...muchas gracias!
A relative did the same to mine, got the charger all munched up. I guess she was expecting an iPhone connector. Sadly I don't have the money to get a soldering iron and a hot glue gun right now, otherwise i'd fix this thing right now with your video. thanks for taking the time mate!
I like your way dude, pure and simple, with no ads or useless talking, if you keep this up you will be able to compete with jerryrigeverithing ,good luck k bro
Clear enough and really helpful ! Thanks a lot !!!
Great vid, helped me out a bunch after mine went for a swim in Exmouth

Well made informative video - thanks a lot.
Perfect. Muchas gracias espero poder repararlo.
Great video! thanks for sharing this with us...
Excellent tutorial, thanks!
Great video, considering attempting the repair myself. Been a while since I've handled a soldering iron, bit worried about damaging the circuit board.

Bit late for this comment, but this advice applies to anyone that's not too confident in soldering. Use high heat, and leaded solder. Use more solder than you think you need. Always apply heat and solder to the part directly, do not apply solder to the iron except initially to aid heat transfer, and again after you clean the tip. Keep heating times as low as possible, without creating cold joints (malformed or very little gloss). Apply extra flux if you like, and always use solder with a flux core, rosin, not acid flux. If the finished joint has black specks, you've cooked the flux, reduce heat a little and try to be faster. Wipe the board down with an electronics/flux cleaner after you're finished.
Thanks for the wonderful video.Do you know the app. size of the battery, or at where can we buy a spare?
yay, you are my hero. I have a UK version of the JBL 3 and it has less screws. only the four at the ends mainly for what i needed to sort. the clip on grill has a slot clip one end and two clips the other. My issue is my on/off button stopped working and i assumed the clicky button had worn out. I soon found the cause, they had used hot melt glue inside the speaker and during the unusually hot weather recently in the UK had melted this hot melt and it had run down and over the on/off button. once the heat died down the button no longer worked. All i had to do was carve off the now solid hot melt and clicky works again. , reassembled and happy.
Great video and explanation but can you show the de-soldering and re-soldering, how do you stop the solder from connecting to the next pin? These micro USB connectors are tiny
excellently done. Thanks you.
MATE! THANKYOU! you saved my speaker, I soldered a new plug in and "Hot Snotted" it in. Cheers

Ebay, china, gota hunt for them but they are there. about a month ago i Mashed the new port (many swear words came out), i have now soldered in 2 small cables in which i connected the port. Its relegated to a desk speaker but at least it isnt totally useless!
Thank you, awesome video
Great job , well done.
Great video, subscribed!
Hello! What is the model of microswitches (construction with micro switch buttons) that are responsible for enabling column, lowering and raising the volume, call answer button (pause), and pairing pairing mode with other speakers JBL Flip 3?
What kind of screwdriver did you use to unscrew the ones on the two sides where there are 6 on each side? I have Philips #1/#0/#00 but they all slip on those screws, even though they worked fine on the ones at the two ends
Is it easy to replace the 1R5 inductor mentioned in 9:45 ? where do i get one of those inductor´s ?
I have one, thanks for the teardown info.
Technique Question: I see in another repair video the USB connector was removed by using a soldering station heat gun that used hot air on the rear side of the PCB, heated it, until the connector slipped off. Do you recommend that technique, or no?
Great video. I was wondering how to get one of those to bits.
Nice repair
You are a bloody genius. I can't do this, but I can at lease send a link to the repair guy & say see!!!! My son only had this for 3 weeks before we stood on the USB unit while charging & munted it. Chur
Sometimes the inductor doesn't get installed all the way. If you don't have any sound push it down and see if when you turn it on it plays the on tune.
Thanks so much very helpful
NFM, great teardown. Quality info, no BS... Much appreciated! Quick question.... Is the microphone the small circle to right of speakers? i.e the end opposite the charging port, front side (opposite the buttons), and to bottom right of right speaker? trying to figure placement for best voice pickup. Thank you!

Yes, just took apart my own Flip 3 to check.
Really helped me there.. Battery was running down pretty fast. Didn't know how to open the device.
Interesting video man!
This was super helpful. Nice to see how to open the speaker. My speaker's USB port looks fine and it will start charging. However, it will not continue charging, It keeps starting and stopping. What would the most likely reason for this issue?
Just watching this as mine wouldn't charge, luckily I've managed to re-align the bent pins, but it would look likely for a repair at some point in the near future... how feasible would it be if I'm doing this repair to fit an apple charging port or new style USB-C port?
Very well made video!
Thank you, mate!
Very good explanation, which is helpfull in my case. Thing is, the pcb board is smashed. I did find the usb-port online, only to find out there are more problems. Any idea how to find this particular pcb?
Thank you so much!
I ripped of the USB/AUX protective flap off, will it affect the splashproof-ness of it? looks like it would.
My dad left this exact speaker after he passed with the exact problem of the damaged USB port thanks for the tutorial 🙏
Works great, looks great.
Hello, does this necessarily have to be the USB connector of a JBL flip 3, or we can use that of a phone for example ?
Well done!
what r ur suggestions on fixing a monster blaster...when im switching it on, it givs a kind on like a radio screeching sound....some of the music is coming out, but its covered by the radio screeching sound...need help bro.
Great video thanks
Do you know if you can buy a new board with the micro USB port? It would be interesting to know if the part number can be bought separately.
Finding a professional with the expertise to do this would involve paying them for at least an hour of their time which would be more costly than the item being repaired. On the other hand, if an amateur is willing to take maybe two or three hours of their own time....and they have more time than money and are sufficiently skilled, talented, and motivated.......then that's great. Of course, all of these situations could be totally avoided if the plug was initially designed to be idiot-proof so you could not accidentally repeatedly put it in backward. Your friend is lucky to have you. On the other hand, 3/4 of a million people have viewed this, I suspect/hope you will have been well compensated. : )
Hi Mate I have a similar speaker which has been dropped. I can hear something rattling about have you came across that before?
Great video! I have one question, can you buy the whole USB board, to eliminate all the soldering?

I don't know how to solder and have no proper equipment, so I am also interested if entire board can be purchased and replaced.
hey i'm french ^^ hello i have a "flip4" is this the same pirincipe repair?
Hi my ribbon cable connecting to the power button is kinda damaged when I was doing a battery change. Do you know if that is easily replaceable?
Thank you for the helpful video and link to parts. Much appreciated.
Great vid mate!! Unfortunately there's no way I can fix it myself, and nobody seems to take care of these devices anymore in my city. Definitely I'm not buying JBL anymore!
thank you so much mate :)
Thank you!
Thnx dude, you save me!
You skipped bit where you do soldering to this tiny 5 pins. Why? I was waiting for this bit and u skipped it. Do I have to solder each pin separately?
Great video. I have same problem but not your skills or equipment. I suspect this is a stupid question, but with the right usb cable, is it wired to charge through the aux jack?
@NearFarMedia
4 жыл бұрын
Nah, unfortunately it only charges through the USB jack.
I love the channels that explain by talking cuz its much more easier to understand Noice
Thanks man! I've been struggling with that for months
apart from these being sold on ebay what is the actual part number of this USB?
Hey I've got a question! I have the same problem, and I think I'm not the only one. But how did you solder those super mini five solder pins behind the micro USB port? The four pins on the sides are not that difficult, but how do you prevent that the solder pins don't hit each other? Thank you!
@NearFarMedia
7 жыл бұрын
A steady hand, a small amount of solder and a fine soldering tip will do it. If you do bridge the pins with solder, some solder wick or a solder sucker can be used to remove the excess solder but leave enough for the pins to stay attached.
do we really have to take everything off like you did the speakers etc?
Will it keep it's water proof capability after taking just the speaker grill out and reassemble?
Thanks dude, Great video. time to order a soldering iron :/
Very informative. Thanks. Only one thing. What is the string for lol
Hi there. I would really love to know where you got the 'geometry' styled vinyl worktop covering from? I am building a worktop for my studio and love that pattern but can't seem to find it anywhere online. Great video as well thanks.

Hi ! Please write the exact battery model, full name with the voltage and capacity?
Could you do a video of how we could change the battery please... Mine keeps turning off as soon as I turn it on.. It turns on for just a mili second then it turns straight off after... Probably a battery thing right?
Niiiiiice ! Thank you
thanks man il try this myself
Very useful instruction. I had the same problem but built an alternative solution. Instead of replacing the micro USB connector I rebuilt the existing Line-in connector to a "Power in" port. If you connect a 3.5 mm jack to the USB cable, be sure to use a 3 way jack and leave the middle contact unused to prevent short circuit when plugging in the jack. Yes, you loose the audio-in port, but I never use it anyway.
@haroldpalmer3245
6 жыл бұрын
Frank Zandee, can you please go into detail on how to do your alternative solution please. I'm with you, I never use the audio IN. I like your idea, you would never have to mess with it again. Thank you for the post.

Hi Harold, I followed the instruction video from NFM but I found it very difficult to get loose the white 4 pin connector (power) and the white 3 pin connector (audio-in) without damaging the lanes on the print. In the end I managed. Next I used a multi-meter to measure which pin of the audio-in connector on the print connects to the tip of a plugged in 3.5mm jack and which pin to the base of the 3.5mm jack. Next I soldered two wires on the identified contacts of the line-in connector on the print and connected the two wires to the red and black wire on the 4 pin white connector. I left the original 3 pin white connector loose as it has no purpose anymore. You can also leave the original 4 pin white connector loose since it now connects via the two wires to the print. Then I put back the print in the original position and reassembled the unit. As a last step I soldered a 3.5mm jack to a USB cable. Make sure that you connect the tip of the 3.5mm jack to + and the base to - Hope this helps.

My pleasure Juan. Glad I could help!
Instead of de and re-soldering that little piece is it possible to just buy that whole piece? Or scavenge it from another unit? I have this exact problem, but would not be able to accomplish the soldering.
If it's under a year old and it's a legitimate JBL product you can actually call Harman kardon now and give them a certain identification number that they will ask you for and with no questions asked they will send you a brand new speaker end a container and shipping label for return shipping on the defective unit. My turnaround time looks like 6 days they were surprisingly easy deal with regarding the manufacturer's warranty

What do you mean legitimate is there that many freaking knockoffs going around
Hi there - mine hasnt worked since i dont know when, but when i plug it in a charger, the light turns on. But doesnt connect nor is responsive. When i take it out from the charger, it just shuts down. Any fix for this, you know? Appreciate it.
The passive radiators and speakers pop out when the speaker is left outside because the air inside the unit is heating up and expanding. Since the speaker is sealed it prevents the inside air from equalizing with the outside air. JBL should maybe Incorporate some kind or pressure relief valve into future units. I own a flip 3 in black. It's probably the best sounding BT speaker I've owned to date, I don't intend to leave mine out in the sun or anything, but the issue with the unit being affected like that has possibly been corrected since most videos talking about it are from last year.
