@@jazztutorial one thing I’ve wanted to learn is how to play a non jazz song in a jazz framework. Take a song like Happy Birthday or Yesterday or whatever and show how it can be reframed in a jazz style. Show how you can vary the degree of complexity you take in a jazz approach. Can any song be reframed like this? Can Metallica be re-interpreted? Do you have to stick with the standard jazz chord progression through out or can you swing back and forth to suit the original song? Are there any techniques to employ to make sure you are taking the audience with you as you improvise around the root melody?

@@splice_joe381idk video yet, but me i take a scale, usually it's gonna be mimor or change a scale for it's sound more classical, like scale C, i change E to E flat and A to A flat and everything sounds good, for the melody of the left hand i do arpegios or chords/break chords, right hand just do everything you want in the scale, trille, chords, some chromatic if you want, octave. I hope it would help you, if you have any question, i can try to answer it. (And sorry for my bad english, im french)

Fantastic thanks. This just proves the point that keeping it simple is the fastest way to develop. Too many teachers try to make ill begotten money and will try and mistify the obvious in order to throttle the max $ out of a student. I used to teach jazz guitar decades ago. I always tried to do exactly the same simple but fast track methods such as he does in his ii V I (vi) examples above. My biggest problem was that students expected it to be really difficult and was their biggest obstacle breaking the mindset that it MUST be diffcult.. This demonstrates it fantastically.

I have, on occasions, taught improvisation to adult learners. You are the first teacher, other than myself, that I've heard reference speech patterns. I always point out to students lacking confidence that they already improvise every time they speak. Also, when improvising alone, I will often take a half-remembered poem from school days and use its phrasing and rhythms as a starting point .... or invent my own.

What's really cool is that when you used the "half-step below each chord tone" approach over G7, almost all of those notes are in the half-whole diminished scale. Taking the 4 notes in the chord times 2 (adding a note a half-step below each chord tone) gives you 8, which is also octatonic. The only difference between the 2 groups of notes is the b2 in the half-whole diminished scale vs the major 7th you get by approaching G from a half-step below.

This was beyond helpful. Thank you. I’ve learned more about improv in this video than in the last 15 years I’ve sought to learn. Thank you again

That means so much for me to hear. The visuals take the longest, but I believe they are essential to learn jazz theory

Thank you so much for your time and effort put into this video! It has been so helpful with some improvisation i’ve been struggling with. My next step is making some more interesting left hand comping!

What’s crazy is you can pretty much play anything, it’s about where you land. The fundamentals of jazz are lots of dissonance to a little resolution but generally speaking you don’t want to fully resolve ever. This is all subjective of course.

4:37 "If you're feeling more advanced you can use a b9" "More advanced" depending on how much you want to think about things (which obviously matters depending on the context of the band or tune/chord). It just sounds so damn sweet. Even if you're not feeling very advanced, I'd definitely encourage people to use all sorts of tones in different contexts to see what combinations and possibilities of flavour exist.

I just meant, you can hear it, regardless of knowledge of theory, use and trust your ears, develop your language ❤️

I don't play, but I'm scratching the surface of theory and even though it's what Bill Evans would call approximating, it really bangs my pan and gives me a better ear for listening. This is a fabulous lesson. You extoll the same wisdom Bill Evans extolled; approach the thing simply - no matter how fundamentally - but absolutely accurate and true. And you must embrace, even love the process, so that you will have something you can build on. I used the same approach with my haircutting students. The principal is the same regardless of the artform. You will have learners who embrace it and you will always have learners who want to race ahead and skip it. But for those who do take the time to learn how to walk the benefit is well worth the slower pace. A terrific and inspiring lesson you've given. Thanks!

This is awesome man. I wish I had seen these types of tutorials a bit sooner haha. Every time I played a solo in my high school band I would always just use the blues scale. Yeah sure it sounds good, but it doesn’t always work and it kinda gets boring! Your tips about the “whole step above” and the “half step below” and the “enclosures” were so good. I’ll really try and master these as it they sound so good when you play them!

Excellent exposition, I’m seven minutes in and that which appeared mysterious and opaquely dense is revealed in formulaic detail. Top stuff Julian . 👌

I understand every single thing you say, but as a classically trained pianist, i always find myself improvising in a classic rhythm pattern, even when im using jazz chord progression
