Very interesting review and terrific editing at the end to let us directly compare! To my ears, all the challengers sounded brighter than the red Dunlop Jazz III. I'm a fan of the Dunlop Ultex Jazz III. I think the material is a bit softer and gives an even darker more mellow tone.

Kudos on such a well cut video. Your comparison cuts flowed well together and were very consistent, something that is surprisingly uncommon here on the tube. I would also like to compliment your presentation style in your tutorials, you never come off as pretentious, and you're not a show off like some of the guy players I have watched, lol. I tend to use a J. Dunlop big stubby 3 mil. ($3.50 American plus free shipping on ebay for a 3 pack.) I've used bone picks but after a time they make your fingers smell like you've had them in an unholy place. (great lesson Sandy)

I've tried so many different shapes, sizes, thicknesses and makes of picks (including Jazz III) over the years, but always "returned home" to my "one and only" favourite type of pick: the small teardrop "358" shape pick. Any make and material I can get my hands on, I'll try! I've got quite a collection of them and use them in different thicknesses (from 1mm up to 2mm or more) and materials, depending on the guitar, scale lenght, string gauge and even amplifier. So I have quite a palette of tones but 358 shape is the only one I'm 100% at home with, I find them very precise and agile. If I had to choose just one, it would probabily be the Pro Plec D'Andrea 358, 1.5mm (which is also the smallest 358 pick I know). I also have an Ernie Ball Prodigy, white, 2mm 358 shape pick. I see that most jazz guitarists love Jazz III shape... anybody else loves 358 picks?

Oh yeah, I had a Gibson pick like that when I started. Used to be my favorite. I've since moved to the Dunlop Tortex 1.14 mm purple stubby jazz pick. It's been a solid pick. ❤

Being a Gearhead, I love these kinds of videos. I use the original Dunlop but I'm always looking for something different. Will check out the ones you've listed. Thank you for another interesting video, lovely Sandra.

Thanks for our kind words! A fan sent me a $50 Blue Chip pick (2mm Jazz 3 shape) and it sounds awesome. Just wanted to let you know, that this would have been my winner probably. But I got the pick after the test and it's easy too expensive.

My personal favorite Jazz IIIs are the Ultex Jazz III XL and the Primetone Jazz III XL 1.4 mm. Honorable mention to the John Petrucci Primetone. My Blue Chip Jazz LG 35 is my real favorite, but it's too expensive for me to recommend unless you're a huge pick nerd like me.

​@GuitarversumSandraSherman I've paid the Bluechip pick tax and had to replace it before. I spent the extra $10 on the wooden case for it and haven't had an issue losing it since.

I play a V-pick, which I think is similar to the Gravity picks you've reviewed. It's also made from acrylic, but it has a triangular shape. It's very smooth. I really like it.

Yes, they are one of my favorites too. Nothing glides faster through the strings like acrylic picks.

I have been using Ernie Ball prodigy mini for roughly a month now absolutely love these phenomenal picks for strumming and shredding. Even though I personally like every aspect of these picks I want to test out what a Dunlop jazz 3 would actually feel like but I am unsure if it is worth buying since they’re particular identical. I love your comparison between the guitar picks really well done and reliable thank you.

My favorite pick is the Dunlop Ultex Jazz iii XL. Love the texture from the raised lettering

Yeah, that's quiet helpfull against slippery picks.

As a bass player I often use Ernie Ball Prodigy Triangle 1.5-2.0mm, it is very stiff, heavy and sounds great on thick bass strings.

Best comparison so far, exactly what I was looking for, I want a longer lasting pick, because I keep wearing them out

Waow, what a great review! Thank you. My favourite Jazz III-sized picks are: Nylpro plus, Acrylux Nitra (super smooth, barely any pick noise at all), Badazz 2.0 mm (roughness goes away rather quick after some playing) and Max Grip Carbon.

great job on all your vids. very concise. I've been a fingerstyle player for 40 plus years, country blues mainly , but recently started dabbling in jazz. When I saw this vid I dug through my pick collection and strangly enough found a D'Addario Black Ice 1.5 mm pick that I received from Planet Waves as a gift with some purchase. It looks like the Jazz III except black. Very smooth and so far I like it. I'll work with it a while to see if I can get the hang of using a pick. Thanks for the pick review.

I learned a few more things I didn’t know that I didn’t know.😁 I saw the late great Joe Pass on a lesson dvd years ago and he cut the tip of his pick off and used only the tip. Of course he played hybrid finger style. And, of course, he was Joe Pass. He always said to do the easiest thing to play the sound inside your head(I’m paraphrasing). Love your lessons, Sandra.

Thank you so much for all your wonderful videos , I've been playing all my life and now I've hit 70 and still trying , this was a great shootout , we just don't see a lot of these picks down here , I've been looking all my playing life for a pick that felt comfortable and sounded good to me, last 12 months I've been using a John Pearse Fast Turtle 3mm , if you ever get the opportunity to try one , give it a go , took me quite a while to get used to it but the sound keeps dragging me back . once again thank you for sharing all your knowledge . cheers, tt.

I use the white tortex jazz III the black nylon 1's in X-L THE SMOOTH BLACK tortex 1'S JAZZ III IN XL and D'Addario planet wave black ice stiffos and the purple stuby jazz 1's from dunlop and john petrucci signiture picks from J-dun-lop as well

I mostly play with my fingers, but the Dunlop 207 is my favourite pick! Round tip, good grip, clear tones without the plastic scratch sound.

You should consider the V-Picks made in Nashville. Great selection and great sound. I used to use Gravity until I discovered V picks. No comparison. Great picks and even greater company. Check them out.

My favourite pics are Dunlop Jazz 208 3mm

Möchte empfehlen, Dunlop Prime Tone SCULPED in verschiedenen Stärken - 1,5 bis 3,0 mm - anzutesten, da Material fester als Dunlop III, also auch nicht kratzt, und SCULPTET = schräg angeschliffen. Leichtes Drehen des Winkels zur Saite ändert Ton von weich (=entlang des Schliffs, up und down-sPleks angeschliffentroke) zu impulsiv und heller (= entlang der Kante des Schliffs up und down). Dazu bei vielen Modellen sind alle drei Seiten des Pleks angeschliffen, = viel Variation in einer Hand, und sie klingen eher nach Akryl als nach Plastik. Dass die Pleks größer als Deine kleinen Jazz III sind, stört nicht, probier es aus. PS: Deine Videos sind einfach toll und sehr sympathisch.

Dava control Jazz Grip Delrin. Stiff, rubber grip, small never breaks a string like my old black Dunlap picks. Available at Amazon.

@@GuitarversumSandraSherman 1.5 MM according to a secondary web site. The Dava company sight does not give a thickness. I don't feel like they flex at all, but I can hold them tight or loose to get a different attack and they don't slip around because of the rubber grip. Definitely worth a try.

I got excited about the prospect of discovering a new possibility...pick wise, but your review has highlighted what I like about the small Dunlop 3 mm stuby ( clear purple )... which I think I will definitely stick with... not sure what its strummability factor is because I am not really inclined to strum much... perhaps it's because it's not a good strummer!hmmm🤔. For some reason I never liked the Stubby. But I know that a lot of people love it. It has a very good sound, it's just the handling I don't like. If you don't strum, it's probably the perfect pick for you! Cloink, cloink 😊

Thanks for the reviews Sandra! They all sound good in your hands! But I'm with you in the Ernie Ball pick and Gravity! I am using 2 now. The Dunlop Jazz JD 205 and D;Andrea Plec 1.5mm. The 205 is a bit bright and the Plec a bit dark and my strings are Thomastik Flat Wound Jazz Swing JS 112 (12 gauge) on a used Epiphone Joe Pass ii pro I just bought used....It is so hard to find the right pick!!!

I really enjoy the JD 205s. Haven't tried D'Andrea yet but I'll be sure to. I'm pretty new to jazz in general but really I'm loving this new world of music. Is there a particular hollow body or semi-hollows that's on the affordable end that you think is a great first jazz box? I've been playing for a long time now but new to the genre. I hear both Epiphone and Ibanez offer great bang for buck value as well as Godin if one wants to pay a bit more

@@grawman67 In the years that I have been playiing (still a beginner) LOL, I would never buy a guiitar over say $1200 and most of my guitars were in the $500 of lower price range. I also try to buy used which would even knock those prices down. My preference in order would be Ibanez both hollow and semi, then Epiphone. These are the guitars I have gravitated to when I first jumped into learning jazz. Now if you can get a Godin I heard they are amazing guitars. Currently I play as Easrman AR371CE for a hollowbody that I bought used for about $700 and D'Angelico Premier Mini DC semi hollow that I also bought used for about $800. My other favorite jazz guitar and if I was only to have one would be my Fender 50's road worn telecaster. Yes, telecasters using the neck pick up are excellenty jazz guitars. Check out the channel of Tim Lerch on youtube. He plays a tele and man what a jazz sound he gets!

I recently switched from jazz3 to gravity 003 picks. They are acrylic and have a very loud and clear top end without sacrificing mids or bass. They feel extremely slippery and the tip feels quite sharp which allows for very fast playing and feels great. They are even slightly smaller than the Dunlop Jazz3 which might not be for everone. Current cost is about 4 Euros per pick. Another pick that kind of grew on me is the Hense "Happy turtle" Jazz3 version. It is quite expensive costing 20 Euros, but it has a very smooth and warm sound with beautiful overtones and the feel against the strings is unlike any plastic. It's pointless to describe. Just get one and see if you like it. I would compare it to a Dunlop Jazz3 Ultex or maybe the Petrucci pick, both of which sound and feel slightly duller tho. Since the price of the Hense pick is 4 times that of a Dunlop I'm not sure if I'd replace it in case I lost it. But I'm very happy with it and wouldn't go back to a nylon pick any time soon :) I,ve also been playing bufallo horn picks which I think sound very warm and organic and produce bright overtones, but they wear down quite fast and The tip is too thick to play fast..

The winner of this test, the Ernie Ball, sounds dull compared to the Blue Chip. But the Ernie Balks are still my go to picks. I'm always afraid to lose the expensive Blue Chip 😊

The cool thing is, picks aren't that expensive. (Although I was given one for $50 :-O) That's why it's fun to check out different ones. GAS on a cheap level, lol

Great comparision! I play mostly the red jazz III and Ulltex (small and normal) and the max grip carbon, but last year just 0.86mm celluloid reduced to the size of jazz. I liked the prodigy and the primetone the most from all you reviewed here. As an allmost intermediate blues player, I experiment with different picks, reshaping them, and with selfmade ones. I like to have a warm, rich and mellow sound with velvety hights. The jazzIII Ulltex did sound less bright after filing a ca. 33*-35* polished bewel on both sides till the tip (like on a dagger). The polishing allows a smoother glide with less stringnoise and a mellow sound. The micro-roughness induces high frequencies stringvibration during the glide. It also will happen to the acrylic picks. I made myself a 3mm out of dental acrylic (I'm dental tech), with the same 35* bevel. The sound was nice and mellow round at first, but after time the microscopic chiping produces more trebble even with the worn off tip. The manufactured shapes of picks often need fineadjustments to personal likings... The roughness of the badass III would be my to go pick for metall (...but have to learn it first...)

Guitarversum Sandra Sherman Yes, I made a silicone mold in the shape of the small stubby pick. Never tried an acrilic from the market, but dental acrilic is kinda sticky to the fingers, with bit of sweat even more. 😃

Guitarversum Sandra Sherman An innovation!😃 Oh, that would be something haha. The pick sounds very nice to my untraind ears, mellow, not bassy, not scratchy, and the rounded tip I made specifically to have soft hights on the thin strings. All angles and curves have an impact on attack and sound and feel....besides the properties of the material😊 I suppose there is almost nothing left, that is'nt been tryed out as pick-materials in the past 70 years or so... ( I even tried a brush for strumming😂) Ofcourse- lifetime supply 😉

Habe wenig Freizeit, daher kanns bissl dauern... Ich werde mir Deine Spielweise anschauen und die picks entsprechend gestalten.... da gibts entscheidende Feinheiten...😊Weil ich blues sound im Kopf habe, weiß ich nicht ob die picks dem jazz gerecht werden können...Wäre aber sehr neugierig, ob sie Dir entsprechen. ... (vielleicht werd ma millionäre😂) Nur eine frage: magst Du ne Delle, oder n flaches pick? Delle fühlt sich kontrolliert an. Du weißt immer , wie und wo die Ecken stehen. mache es so, daß Du spürst ob Du mit Spitze oder Rundung spielst. Welche Stärke wäre angenehm? Kann jede Dicke machen😊 (mein Gedanke tendiert zu 2 oder 2,5 bis 3mm (eine Delle läßt sie aber dünn anfühlen und sie hopsen nicht raus)

Hi Sandra, my fav pick is Pickboy J-pick jazz, d'addario acrylux nitra, and Eric Jhonson jazz iii..so far is the best pick for jazz and perfect substitute or upgrade for standard jazz iii imho, and also you should try Gravity standard mini and Taylor thermex..you're a great teacher! I discovered the D'addario Acrylux pucjs after this video. I wish they made them in 2-3mm. I be acryluc materials for pics. So smooth. And the shape is perfect, just like the jazz 3. But they're so thin.

Great video, I went through quite a few before finding that the John petrucci jazz 3 are perfect.

@@GuitarversumSandraSherman yes but only slightly, I find they have the perfect amount grip (due to the jp logo) and because the picking end is polished they glide across the strings very well. I was very apprehensive buying a " signature pick" but petrucci had a lot of input and it really shows.

I agree with Karl. The Petrucci jazz III are my go to pick but the Prime Tone is also in my pocket.

I like the gravity trip but I'm using the trip by gravity I'm using the trip standard to it also has three edges I think you were reviewing the mini but I have the I think it's the regular since I'm blind I can't tell if I think I'm using the regular size but it does have three different points so for me it's the gravity trip standard to Great review thank you my autocorrect is terrible but to confirm I'm using the trip standard 2

I reviewed the Mini AND the Tripp Big Mini. I think the Tripp only comes in this one size, named Big Mini.

Amazing comparison as I'm a member of the jazz III cult myself. I was disappointed with the chicken pick at first too, but the roughness disappeared after a couple hours of playing and I'm really happy now

Dunlop 208 for lead and the JazzIII for essentially everything if needed. Also use Dunlop 1mm b/c they are nice on round wounds but less on flats, and Tortex Yellow for blues, rock and anything not jazz.

I never cared much for the sound, more for the haptic. This test opened my eyes too. The differences are even bigger when you play it yourself, than listening to recorded sound. The instant response is totally unique to each pick.

Ok so i just got my Ernie Ball Prodgy Minis today. Brilliant!! Great tone and great for hybrid. Thanks so much for your recommendation.

Thanks so much or the kind words. Let me know what you're thinking of the Ernie Ball picks! As for the weight, I've counted calories, bc that really showed me what I eat and have me a feeling for Weltausstellung better or worse. I also try to not eat for 16 hours (early evening till next morning) on about 3 days per week. The last meal I eat is always rock of protein. Proteines are a fat burner over night.

@@GuitarversumSandraSherman I ended up buying the Dunlop "Jazz III Variety Pack" (one each of red nylon, black nylon, Tortex Jazz, ULTEX XL, ULTEX, Max-Grip Carbon Fiber) to try one each of Dunlop's Jazz III style picks, one 6-pack of the white Ernie Ball Prodigy Mini 2mm picks, one 3-pack of the Dunlop Primetone Sculpted Plectra 1.4mm Jazz III, and one BlueChip BC Jazz 50 pick. After spending one week practicing guitar with each of those different picks my top three preferred Jazz III style picks are: 3. Dunlop Primetone Sculpted Plectra 1.4mm 2. red Dunlop Jazz III 1. BlueChip BC Jazz 50 The white Ernie Ball Prodigy Mini 2mm pick came in 4th place. I liked the Prodigy Mini's 2mm thickness. Although it has almost identical dimensions to the red Dunlop Jazz III the Prodigy Mini's all-around bevelled edge made the pick feel in my hand smaller than it is. Also Prodigy Mini's pick tip felt too pointy (maybe because of the bevelled edge) to me. I like your practice of not eating for 16 hours (early evening until next morning) 3 days per week to help you stay slim. I do the same!

That's so sweet of you. I don't really like my accent. Spent some time in the UK as a kid (almost everywhere), my Dad is American, but I grew up as a German native speaker. Well, as long as I don't sound like Arnold Schwarzenegger :-)))

This is awesome! I like the look of the Sunrise pick. And you say it plays smootly? I will check it out. Not sure, though, if my local music store has those.

@@GuitarversumSandraSherman I do like the taper at the edges of both. I gave a John P to my guitar teacher (also Jon P!). He had been using a pick for over 20 years and has switched styles. Thanks for the "Greetings from Austria". I toured your country with Eidelwiess Bike Tours out of Mieming and spent some time there on other rides. 2 friends and I were on Grossglockner on a pristine summer day! A priceless memory from a beautiful country.

actually, "Motorcycle" tours!

In condition of high gain , distorsion or any metal sounds effects thermosomething , acryllics even ultex chirp like hell.I tryed lots of picks and materials.Nylon and tortex are much noiseless than all.Nice video.

Hi Sandra, I also like my Prodigy Pick! I tried the 1,5 mm and the smaller sized ones too, but my favorite is still the same one you chose. I like the Wegen Picks when playing my Dupont MD50 because they just feel "Right" and sound very good. Have you tried the Guzz 3 Pick yet? It's quite different than the Wegen but that's good! Because it gives you some variety, but is still has everything you are looking for in a Gypsy Jazz Pick. Thanks for another very informative and interesting video Sandra!

For Gypsy I use a Wegen, small, 3.5mm pick. It's very cool, although it produces a little too much cloink noise. I'll have to try the Guzz you mentioned.

I used the jazz 3 picks for years but finally found a pick that blows them away, Zenfire picks. They make a pick they call the Phat Jazz. It is almost exact in size and shape to the Dunlops but the zenfire has a wicked good grip and twice the tone and feel. I'm not going back.

I played that one for about 15 years, until I realized it's too large for me. Ever since I play smaller picks, they don't slip through my fingers anymore.

Just a small point. The Ernie Ball 2mm Prodigy has several different types. Which one did you use? Large Shield Mini Multi pack Sharp Shield Standard Teardrop

Good review. The gravity Trip looks like a very versatile alternative to me. Do they make larger sizes as well? I'm not that fond of the mini picks... I use Jazz III XL's (regular and Ultex, depending on my mood and the guitar and amp I'm using). Lately I ran into Dunlop Primetone sculpted picks too. I am very fond of the 3 mm version, which is easily getting me into gypsy jazz territory. Great stuff, especially if - like me - you don't use a very tight pick grip.

Yes they come in all sizes. I have a screenshot of the website in the video, where you can see all the options of shapes, sizes and others.

The dava control pick ho guive you the flex you want when you need it to achive the best control possible but it could be a little bit longer to masterise

i use the wheel of a riveter on the tip of a small soldering iron. The heated wheel turns around the tip, where it is fixed with little washers and a guitars belt pin. It stitches tiny holes, and the pick gets a sandy, grippy surface.

You might really like the Dunlop jazztones I believe it’s 2.4mm and a hair smaller than the jazz iii

Interesting video even though I'm strictly a fingerstyle jazz player. I'm not sure if I even own a pick. 🤔😄

I bought the Tripp 3mm, 1 size up from the Jazz3. Although the size was just what I was after, it has an annoying characteristic of making a sound like a tink on a pipe when hitting the strings, whereas the Jazz3 doesn't. $11.70 for 1 pic, shipped...ouch.

Some picks have that click sound, but I didn't hear it in the Tripp. Maybe it's the way we hold the pick differently?

I used to play the max grip for a while, until I realized, that I can't rotate that pick for strumming, die ti the max grip riffles.

I like the chicken pick for power chords actually.

I like the Dunlap Jazz III 2.0 mm, and sometimes the Dunlap Jazz I which is very rounded and gets over the strings easily.

Heavy Fender 358 (small Jazz/Mandolin Pick) for me. i play Tele, Hybrid picking, and the 358 picks come closest to the sound of my Fingernails.

358 picks (I have many different brands, materials and thisknesses of them), My hands are very small and they are the smallest, most agile and precise picks, for me... they seem to be so unpopular that it's not easy to find them in shops.

Try to find Pee Wee picks from Fred Kelly Thumb Picks in America. Best I have ever used. They are small "jazz picks" .

i just got the Eric Johnson jazz 3 , a lot darker than the original .. I'm back and forth with back them.

I've never tested that. I always wondered, if there's a difference, bc all those endorsement jazz 3 picks look rather identical.

Termine comprando la jazztone 207 Error. Punta muy redondeada, debi elegir la jazz 3 Acá en argentina con el costo de envío pague cada 207 unos mil pesos. Compré 3 o sea tres mil siendo un salario de 100 mil en promedio Caro el hobby Abrazo Sandra y amigos !

what is your opinion on Teardrop picks? Those little elongated ones, like D'Andrea 358 or something, I've found some that are quite heavy and sharp just like a jazz III. Ordered a bunch to check them out, but I'm wondering why they are so unpopular, I've never seen a single guitarist using them... But they sell so many varieties.. who buys them lol??

I used to play the purple Dunlop 2mm pick for a very long time. It was the de facto standard for jazz guitarists back then. But I always found them rather big for my small hands and I had little control over them. They always slipped out of my hands. The smaller jazz 3 size is oerfect for me (and it seems for many others too), bc it sits right in the groove of my index finger.

The red Jazz III changes its sound once it is worn out compared to the black one which is consistent

Yep, tried that obe. Has a really good grip, but turned it down, bc I sometimes turn the pick 90 degrees when I do Swing comping (strumming). The elevated grip scratched the strings and I got stuck between strings.

Mine is Jim Dunlop Big Stubby 3 mm.

Hehe 😊. But the right pick (for you) can still help. But then again it's practice and getting into details. I once tried to figure out the best angle to cross strings smoothly in various scenarios (coming from a downstroje or upstroke etc) . I spent a few weeks on that and it changed my playing for the better.

Nein, das string noise kommt nicht von einer falschen Haltung. Es stimmt zwar, dass es leiser wird, wenn man den Pick gerader hält, aber der Pick gehört nun mal leicht schräg gehalten.

There are plenty of different materials. Buffalo horn, Delrin, Acrylic.. I love acrylic picks. Check out the Gravity Picks or V Picks.

have you tried the new dunlop flow picks? they're bigger than the jazz 3s but not as big as standard ones. they also come with gauges upto 3mm

the flow picks are very similar to the primetone picks except they have width to them which you didnt like about the primetones, so you might actually enjoy those

Haha! They have two variants (the standard which are a bit smaller that range from .73-2.0 and then they have the jumbo ones which also start at 2.0-3.0) id recommend the 2.0 (standard which is color black) i know it's kinda confusing because they have 2 kinds of 2.0mm available. Just be sure not to use the green one since that's the slightly bigger 2.0 version
