In this guitar lesson I'm going to be showing you how to use your guitar pick while simultaniously using your fingers. This is called Hybrid Picking and it's an essential style of modern guitar playing, no matter what genre. For jazz guitar players it's almost a must. It's the most flexible way to play chords and licks in one song. Today we don't have the classical role seperation of rhytm and solo guitarists anymore. Everyone needs to be able to play everything. Sometimes fingers are the better choice sometimes a guitar pick. If you don't want to constantly put your pick aside, then put it back in your hands again, you need more flexibility. Hybrid Picking is the best way to not lose any time, because the pick is always in your hand, while you can still use your fingers.
I'll teach you how to hold your guitar pick (plectrum) correctly, which is very important to be able to use your fingers along and also get the best sound and flexibility.
Then we'll make some exercises to slowly overcome that strange feeling most beginners of Hybrid Picking have, when they start out using that technique.
I'll also show you how to connect chords and melody, using Hybrid Picking technique in exercises.
If you use Hybrid Picking from now on, it will become second nature to you and you won't want to play any other way.
This Guitar Lesson on Guitar Hybrid Picking is for all musical genres, not only for jazz guitar. If you want more flexibility, use it!
As always, if you like my Hybrid Picking guitar tutorial with exercises, please give me a thumbs up and share the knowledge!

Thank you, thank you. Hybrid picking has given me fits, and I am sure this will help. I am used to having my pinky as an anchor so I feel like my hand is all over the place. I really enjoy your channel, hands down I feel you are the best instructor on KZread.

Same here!! The pinky has been my stabilizing crutch for years while fingerpicking with only first 3 fingers (can’t bend ring finger at first knuckle due to childhood injury). And enjoyed your instruction greatly. @guitarversumsandrasherman do you have any suggestions on arm/hand positioning to over this habit?? Thanks
THANKS!!!

Guitarversum Sandra Sherman The technique is very usefull if I have allready a pick in my hand. But I will translate and practice your lesson for just finger-picking or with a thumb pick. Liebe Sandra, Hut ab vor Deinem Wissen und Können! Ich würde gerne einen schönen blues spielen lernen und möchte mich dabei an der Komplexität von jazz bedienen😊
Do thanks, you are a great teacher..👍👏👏👏👏

@@jamesmargulis332 Yes, I read several comments throughout the last years, regarding hybrid picking problems. So I thought it's about time to do a committed tutorial on it.

Good one, Sandra! Following your comment section I understand that many people are having issues with that technique.

Hi Sandra, yes agreed...commit to it and persevere. I am a convert, but for a while it seemed like such an insurmountable obstacle. What I found helpful was to avoid switching to hybrid picking on tunes you are already used to playing non-hybrid style but instead start hybrid picking with a new tune. Dunlop 3 mm stuby is my preferred pick. Missed you last week.

That's a good tip indeed! Sorry for not showing up last week. During the weaker season, I take a week off sometimes, in order to have more preparation time for new videos. Also, I'm currently in the studio, working on some audio recordings.
Hello Sandra. I had no idea what the heck Hybrid Picking was until I saw your video. It certainly made a believer out of me and put me on another path to accomplish something new out of my sweet jazz guitar whom I name her Nelly.

Hey, glad to be of help. I wish I could play fingerstyle better. I also don't know how to use a thumbpick correctly. Well, not everything's for everyone, I guess 😊
BTW, I notice that lovely Eastman behind you. Looks similar to the Guild Starfire II that I have. I also have 2 Eastmans and love them. The AR372 and the T386. Eastman makes beautiful looking and sounding guitars. Great quality for the money.

Absolutly! Eastman gives great guitars for the money.
Ha, as a finger picker I've been struggling with that bitchy pick for a while now. This tutorial comes at a perfect time :-)
I've been practcing this for the last weeks and I'm slowly but surely advancing. The pick doesn't feel like a total strange thing in my hands anymore. But I've still got a long raod ahead, till it feels really naturally.

Thanks for the lesson! Just started hybrid picking, and these exercises are perfect. Do you have any advice on muting while using this technique? Thanks again!
@GuitarversumSandraSherman

Always test your thumb across the lower strings. The higher strings I sometimes mute with my fingertips, a short slight touch is enough.
Great lesson on what has been a frustration for me. What do you have as far as fingernails? Not press on nails I hope.

Thanks for this. Do you have any thoughts on Wes Montgomery's finger style? I've never seen him play with a pick, yet his sound was so unique......Cheers!
@GuitarversumSandraSherman
5 жыл бұрын
He played thumb only. He once said in an interview, that he has 7 kids at home and a pick is too loud, so he started using only his thumb. The most occurring mistake I see with this technique is, that people don't tensen up their thumb well enough. While a pick should be held loosely, you need to put a little tension into your thumb muscles, else the sound won't have good definition.

Great lesson. I have been growing my nails for hybrid picking. I see you don’t use your finger nails. So you’re just using the meat of your finger. At an angle. Can you explain that?

Well, I don't like the scratchy fingernail sound. Also I bite them sometime (yeah, I know 🙈).
hi sandra been looking for an easy lesson on this and i find the pick slips a lot when i'm practicing. the pick has a little grip on it but still slips the guage of the pick is .88 but doesn't bend is this normal for begginners are there anymore tips for stopping this
@GuitarversumSandraSherman
Жыл бұрын
Every pick slips unfortunately. But there are picks that have a sand paper like structure (just where your hold it), maybe that's better for you.
Is it a requirement to use the pinky also with HybridPicking?
@GuitarversumSandraSherman
3 ай бұрын
Yes, othersise you only have 2 fi gers left. Most jazz chords gave 4 tones, so you need that pinky. And it has the melody or voice leading tone, so you even need to play it a little louder.
Thanks for all your great lessons. Very detailed and practical. There seems to more and more use of finger style jazz guitar being played out there. In switching from using a pick to finger style I've been learning Hybrid picking so this lesson is very helpful and I notice it seems to be your preference (as opposed to full finger style). Yet, I feel I can have even more flexibility if I learn full finger style technique. I've previously avoided that because I was afraid I would lose speed in my single line playing, which is why I've been drawn to Hybrid picking. But, after watching Joe Pass and many others, (not to mention Flamenco players!) I know that when done correctly, speed is not a problem. Do you also do complete finger style without a pick? If so, I would love a lesson (technique, exercises, etc.) that helps us pick players learn to make the transition and throw away the pick.
