In this guitar lesson I'm going to be showing you how to use your guitar pick while simultaniously using your fingers. This is called Hybrid Picking and it's an essential style of modern guitar playing, no matter what genre. For jazz guitar players it's almost a must. It's the most flexible way to play chords and licks in one song. Today we don't have the classical role seperation of rhytm and solo guitarists anymore. Everyone needs to be able to play everything. Sometimes fingers are the better choice sometimes a guitar pick. If you don't want to constantly put your pick aside, then put it back in your hands again, you need more flexibility. Hybrid Picking is the best way to not lose any time, because the pick is always in your hand, while you can still use your fingers.
I'll teach you how to hold your guitar pick (plectrum) correctly, which is very important to be able to use your fingers along and also get the best sound and flexibility.
Then we'll make some exercises to slowly overcome that strange feeling most beginners of Hybrid Picking have, when they start out using that technique.
I'll also show you how to connect chords and melody, using Hybrid Picking technique in exercises.
If you use Hybrid Picking from now on, it will become second nature to you and you won't want to play any other way.
This Guitar Lesson on Guitar Hybrid Picking is for all musical genres, not only for jazz guitar. If you want more flexibility, use it!
As always, if you like my Hybrid Picking guitar tutorial with exercises, please give me a thumbs up and share the knowledge!

    Hi Sandra, yes agreed...commit to it and persevere. I am a convert, but for a while it seemed like such an insurmountable obstacle. What I found helpful was to avoid switching to hybrid picking on tunes you are already used to playing non-hybrid style but instead start hybrid picking with a new tune. Dunlop 3 mm stuby is my preferred pick. Missed you last week.

    He played thumb only. He once said in an interview, that he has 7 kids at home and a pick is too loud, so he started using only his thumb. The most occurring mistake I see with this technique is, that people don't tensen up their thumb well enough. While a pick should be held loosely, you need to put a little tension into your thumb muscles, else the sound won't have good definition.

    Is it a requirement to use the pinky also with HybridPicking?

  • @GuitarversumSandraSherman

    @GuitarversumSandraSherman

    Yes, othersise you only have 2 fi gers left. Most jazz chords gave 4 tones, so you need that pinky. And it has the melody or voice leading tone, so you even need to play it a little louder.

    Thanks for all your great lessons. Very detailed and practical. There seems to more and more use of finger style jazz guitar being played out there. In switching from using a pick to finger style I've been learning Hybrid picking so this lesson is very helpful and I notice it seems to be your preference (as opposed to full finger style). Yet, I feel I can have even more flexibility if I learn full finger style technique. I've previously avoided that because I was afraid I would lose speed in my single line playing, which is why I've been drawn to Hybrid picking. But, after watching Joe Pass and many others, (not to mention Flamenco players!) I know that when done correctly, speed is not a problem. Do you also do complete finger style without a pick? If so, I would love a lesson (technique, exercises, etc.) that helps us pick players learn to make the transition and throw away the pick.
