Jazz drummer reacts: Devin Townsend-Hear Me (Sam Paulicelli)

Музыка

Had to upload because Sam wasn't sure I was serious that I had one of his videos to upload. Proof!
See the video posted after this one for a little lesson in adapting the flam accent for metal and jazz.

Devin Townsend said in a video on the making of Empath that he chose Samus for his precise, almost robotic style of playing. It was perfect for the sound he was after. Great drummer.

He’s basically the younger peoples Gene Hoglan. His blasts and extreme drumming is so influenced by him. Also his precision and cleanliness. He also uses triggers how they should be used.

Жан Агъырджанокъуэ Oh for sure. He has way more groove. He’s like Vinnie Paul on steroids. Sammus is a better version of Derek Roddy ultimately. Hes more styled like SYL’s extreme days but his blasts are very Roddy in nature just better. Another creative metal drummer worth noting no one follows is Peter Wildoer. Extremely musical and dynamic player. He’s the only reason I listen to James Labrie’s solo albums lol.

The flam accent blast is affectionately known as "The Dirk Blast", as made famous by Dirk Verbeuren, who has played for Devin in the past, was in Soilwork, and is the current drummer for Megadeth! Definitely check him out for some insane metal playing, he's got this loose frantic feel that's still incredibly tight and precise, one of the few extreme metal drummers with a clear signature sound, like you can instantly recognise when he's behind the kit!

In metal what you call a flam accent is call a dirk blast since it was “created” by Dirk Verbeuren. Dirk is currently playing with Megadeth but was in band like Soilwork, Scarve and Aborted. I like watching you reacting to metal and being impressed or blown away by what you're seeing. There was a time where nobody took metal seriously enough for it to be able to get by on its own merits, and "He's a jazz drummer" used to be some kind of validation for a metal drummer, like being a metal drummer wasn't good enough. Metal has changed fairly recently, there's a shed-load more of this more technical stuff out there now, and it's really cool to see a non-metal musician appreciate it for what it is.

Please look up Richard Christy live drum cam with Burning Inside... double ride, triple hi hat, absolute beast! Probably not reaction quality but his precision cuts through. Worth a watch.

fred pitt Yes! Dillinger Escape Plan! Honestly do a video of all their drummers cause Gil Sharone is also a killer drummer. But billy has the best drum play thru videos but Chris Pennie got that technique down

It’s cool to see how much you enjoy Samus as well as Gene Hoglan in the other video. Fun fact, Gene played in Devin’s other band strapping young lad. Devin always gets the best musos!
