Fun fact. This song in particular is part of the Sydney Conservatorium for Music's composition course study. Professor Hindson commented on the event, saying: "I will be presenting “And Plague Flowers The Kaleidoscope” to the composition students at the Conservatorium next semester as an exemplar in structure, mixing timbres, meters, modes, how to approach virtuosity, sound and noise, extended performance and techniques. The students will need to study 2 technical aspects of what NE OBLIVISCARIS have done in their music, and then use these techniques in their own classical music compositions.

5:45 "He's just got pillows jammed in there" That is because of the pedals he is using. They are very light and easy to move, but that means sacrificing power for speed. So in order to make everything sound nice, he throws triggers on the bass drums. Adding pillows in and keeping the heads super tight will make sure the triggers catch the slightest hit. It allows for him to maintain those fast feet for longer without having to put the extra effort in.

Hello! I saw a lot of comments answering that consistent bass drum rolls under slower hand patterns aren't considered blast beats, but I didn't see many giving a very good explanation of what the term does encompass, so I thought I'd give it a go. Blast beats are a family of drum beats derivative of the "skank beat" that revolve around a rapid, consistent pulse on both the snare and the bass drum. The traditional blast beat is phrased as consistent 16ths, with bass drum and cymbal on the 8ths and snare on the off-16ths, played at 160-300+bpm. There are many variants, however, and some of the prominent ones don't follow this alternation. The "hammer blast" (the terms were largely coined by metal drummers ;) ) is phrased as straight 8ths with cymbal, snare, and bass drum synced, and the "bomb blast" is the same but with bass drum on every 16th note in the measure. Triplet variants are also common and drummers often ornament blasts with added snare/bass drum notes and modified cymbal patterns, but as long as the beat is still felt as that fast pulse on snare and bass drum, it can still qualify as a blast beat.

Landed on your channel somehow through the infamous youtube rabbit hole checking out Wintersun and Messhuggah reactions and I sat here, in my NeO shirt thinking man, if this guy hasn't heard them yet I'm going to smash a comment asking for one. But you (and youtube) were a step ahead, recommending this video as the next! So glad to see the respect of someone within the field being given with such joy to these guys. You saying it's like a whole new genre of music is pretty much hitting the nail on the head! I'm also glad to see them flourish and expand as the years go by; I remember seeing them live for the first time in a crowd no larger than 30 people, and that's a stretch. At the time it was a selfish listen, standing before these amazing musicians and only a handful of people can enjoy it. Never would I have thought they'd become a world wide sensation, that's some shit out of a movie. Keep up the great reactions!

I think there's something about 'non-metal' musicians reacting/discovering metal that brings us metal heads so much joy (even though you used to play metal as a kid). We always pride ourselves on being in this "exclusive, inaccessible genre of music" but at the same time want/love for outsiders to experience what we experience and show the same amount of passion. So this awesome! and even more so that this video is a reaction to one of my favourite bands from my home town of Melbourne, Australia. Keep doing what you do \m/

Try doing 66Samus playing Devin Townsend's "Hear Me." There's a great closeup video on KZread, he's a KZreadr with a lot of subs, and the blast beat stuff in it is nuts. Devin Townsend reaction videos will draw traffic in general.

I love the pedal and cymbal setup. I wish I could pull off the dual ride use like he does. Mine aren't in the exact same spot but it's close. Super cool to see this guy just rip through this song and look so relaxed.

afaik, fast doublebass with no fast "alternating" snare hit is not a blast beat. a "proper" blast beat is essentially a polka beat played at least at 180bpm or thereabouts (i think Cannibal Corpse is at the slowest end of the spectrum)
