The "woke" character who told them about the system also told them that he would be in prison forever. Then he came forward and told on them for talking about escape. He believed in the system so much that even knowing it was wrong when presented when an opportunity to escape he choice to stay in subjugation. The news reported that seven people escaped but there were eight people at that table. Some of us spend our whole lives saying that this world is messed up and crooked, But never do anything more than complain. Instead of trying to change the world the way we talk, we act, we think, We stay the same, We choose to live our whole lives only worried about improving our own personal conditions. Then die knowing that the world was messed up and we did nothing to fix it .

But, of course, in order to do so, you need to be aware that it has been locked up in the first place. Hence, Carter. The very aspects you believe are preventing you from said escape (the guards and warden) are powerless once you have taken the initiative to release yourself. Go and create your legacy.

This is my interpretation: Jay z is Ron Perlman in the scene. He’s portrayed as an old white man who has lots of power and influence. The video doesn’t end with him escaping but over the news you hear that seven escaped but he’s still inside. I feel jay Z is trying to say that he has spent his whole life trying to win in a white world and became successful and influential, yet still locked up in a prison which represents the system that he still wants to fight. I feel like the character played in the clip is like jay teaching younger generations after him to not get locked in the system yet again but to break free entirely-not become just another white man. he’s trying to say that you don’t need to follow the white man rules and become more white to find success but to recreate your own destiny and do it your way. He’s exposing how chasing the latter only gets you so far before you realize you’re still locked up.

not really. they shot it in a prison that they rented for a day and had some actors dressed like prison inmates have a conversation and some other actors to fill the room. they had a lady in an office and that's it. this video wasn't expensive at all. just because it's over 10min long and a room full of people doesn't mean it's expensive.

Wow, this was so deep. Wasn't really a Jay Z but this video definitely has me eager to listen to this album. So many hidden meanings in this video which is easily understandable for those who understand how the world really works.
