You're doing a great job with this, Jay! I love that you're talking us through all the decisions you're making and talking through the reasons you're making them. I also love that you're willing to let us know that you are sometimes having to fudge things. Plus, showing us your mistakes is really helpful, so that you aren't the only one learning from them -- we get to learn too! (BTW, I'm building two horse barns by myself right now, and it's taking me FOREVER -- I definitely feel your pain at having to work alone most of the time!)

with the moss on the roof, one thing i learned YEARS ago, if you install strips of copper sheeting about a foot wide every few courses of shingles, with ha;d of the copper exposed to the elements, as it ages it will develop copper sulfate which will keep moss from growing on your roof.

Jason, thanks for being vulnerable. Simply the best kind of video. I’m with Steph, no heights for me neither. I get 10’ off the ground and I’m white knuckle both hands. I don’t even think about it either. Just happens. If I were to get up there, you would be calling the fire company to get me down. Imagine that. Can’t get past it either. Keep the humor alive my friend. Well done.

You know what, Jay, messing up and having to learn lessons the hard way is the best learning experience in my opinion. When I was a kid I bricked the family computer when I was trying to upgrade it or something and we had to get a replacement under warranty. I never made that mistake again because that screw up was traumatizing and I never forgot it. And I've repeated that my whole life. But you definitely fixed your mistake and made it work and that's all that matters.

I find these kinds of videos much more useful and interesting than videos that just bash everything out without any discussion of even issues they are trying to avoid. Seeing you talk and work your way to the cause and solution is great even if a little kluge in the end. It’s also funny to watch someone so close in age to me using slang from our younger days 👍

Great build. This might help you on figuring out the cuts on the rafter with no math involved. Place your rafter on top of your band board. Then scribe a line on your rafter by holding a scrap lumber against the rafter and flat on the band board; this will give you angle for the roof cut. Do the same thing on the girder.

In my experience, band boards run horizontal on the foundation or at the gable ends and under a soffit to divide sidings material. In your case, it would be called a nailer or even a ridge. Joist are used for floor system or ceilings. You are working on Rafters. When you check your plumb in relation to the nail in the foundation check the end of the 6x6 that is horizontal to the nail in the foundation. You set the post with a 4 foot level any variation in the post outside the 4 foot level location when you plumbed them could through you bottom and top off. In your case for establishing the rafter. Get the angle for the top. Cut the the angle set the top on the nailer at the top and tack as close to the end as you can . The bottom end can be tacked to the side of the 6x6 at what ever height and depth you decide to make the birds mouth , usually 1-1/2 deep. Then just trace around the 6x6 and determine your overall length from the 6x6 make a plumb line . Take the board down and cut the length and the birds mouth and you should be go to go. Basically what you did at the end where you placed the board on the end of your 6x6. You should have screwed the rafter to the side of the 6x6 and traced the back side ad the 6x6. If you have any dips/ humps in the old roof your rafter lengths and angles may be off. You get an A for all your efforts!

The angle was different because the point on the roof became the pivot point that was created when you cut the birds mouth, which dropped that end, thus changing the angle ever so slightly.

This episode cracked me up. Last winter while I was preparing to build my 16X36 foot shop I built the roof trusses in my carport. My plan was a 6-12 pitch. After mutch flipping and flopping and flapping of my try square, I built 24 trusses. I was so proud of myself, even I couldn"t stand me!! They ended up 8-12 pitch!! Had a neighbor kid who works for a building contractor, along with a bunch of triends from church, help me install yhe trusses. Every time I looked over at him he was just standing there shaking his head!! I feel your pain Jay!!

Next time, just mock up a rafter on the roof you’re piggy backing onto how it would be if it were installed. Then take a scrap board and lay it on the roof next to your rafter following the pitch of the existing roof and scribe a line. That’s your angle. No math at all.

Hey Jason, I think the other part you were missing on the rafters is the back part of the heel cut/birds mouth should be 90 degrees from the other line in the cut. Even when you fixed it at 25:15 it wasn't enough because the board was not sitting flat. Cutting at 3/12 or 2/12 will only impact the length of the board needed and where the band board sits on the roof. As long as both ends of the rafter are cut to the same pitch then they will sit flush.

For the bird’s mouth to line up the way you were hoping for, I would have taken one of the 6 x 6 cutoffs and sit it on end at the outside of the deepest part of your bird’s mouth so you could put lines on the joist where you want them. The difference in the overall angle up on the garage would be negligible. Regardless, it looks great. Looking forward to seeing the completed build. FYI, I’m a DIYer. I’m about to start a 12’ x 32’ storage building (lean-to style), so I’ve been watching tons of KZread videos on lean-to rafters/joists. I feel like I’ve learned just enough to be dangerously stupid. Good luck 👍🏻

Thinking way too much, you got this! Of course I know you have already done this but I couldn't bite my tongue, disabled carpenter and I have been watching the Perkins site for a while now, mostly because it reminds me of my guys and the work we did, we were a custom home builder also and we had a 4 to 5 man grew that was very tight knit and we had a lot of fun and we even had a older gentleman that was awesome to have around just for the knowledge and experience. I was going to suggest that you nail your ledger or band board through your truss over the old roof with the caulk behind each of the fasteners. Find the first one and then you are off to the races. And you can take 5 minutes of your time and actually watch the process of figuring out the roof cuts. I like watching the two old timers that hand nail everything and they dress alike. If I find out what site it is I'll send it to you and you can see if it helps. Doesn't hurt to ask a dumb question. But good job all in all.

I didn’t have a Jamie and have been what you are going through right now. Something about figuring out yourself and those mistakes, you’ll learn from those. It’s looks great so far. Great weekend project.👍

Looks like you guys have yourself a dingo/Carolina Dog with Charlie. Looks similar to mine and has the same mannerisms. I'm keeping mental notes in case I have a project similar.

I am a finish carpenter. So, I would have put the board in place and 'winged it'. Easier.

Your idea to use "Zip Board" is a good one it would hold everything together. Poor Steph you could see that she tried to get on the roof, some people just can't. I had a neighbor that if he was on a ladder and his feet were 4 - 5 rungs high, his knees would be knocking. I used to draw all of my plans when doing remodeling and even done some for family and friends. That way it is easier to get angles right. It's looking good Jay, once the roof is on everything else just is plain sailing 👍 Take care and be safe, regards to you and the family 🔨🔨🔨🔨🔨

With all due respect. I don’t just frame for a living. I do everything!! I have only been doing this for about 5 years( I’m a real estate agent) and as far as my knowledge what I was doing was completely correct I just had the wrong pitch on my roof. I was having fun and trying to give cool content. Thanks for commenting!

@@Building_Jays_Way Hey Jay! I'm not sure why, but KZread, despite me being in Scotland, recommended the PBB channel a couple of years ago and I've been watching it since. Love just watching you guys as a team, really. I remember your own channel being mentioned at one point but never got a chance to look it up until it appeared in a link today and I have been enjoying this series on my day off. I just knew there'd be a comment like the one from Toady in the comments but I love the fact that you left it all in and explained to us your reasoning for it all. It was great to see the school geometry come to use and as someone who does DIY, the problem solving is invaluable. Keep up the good work. I'm off to plough the other 5 videos now to see the finished product. Hoping for more Charlie in the vids...what a lovely pup! (and more Stephanie too, I guess. haha!)

I like that your real and show mistakes also, most people are top round or lie about it. Looking good to be doing by yourself. Everything is 2x as hard by yourself.
