Another thing about the contrast of the characters on the boat, is how enjoyable it is when they start working together as team, and how Quint's anecdote makes him more likable as they bond. We really want them to just get along, but we can also see each perspective and its influence on their actions. Quint also foreshadows his own end. We also get the exposition about the tanks through conflict, so we know exactly what Brody's plan is before he fires. The tanks are also tied to the ideas of safety and Hooper's love for modern technology.

The positioning of key sequences is important - in particular, Quint's Indianapolis story. He could have laid that on us earlier in the dock prep sequence, or when Brody hires him, but it is most effective after we have had time to form our own opinions of him from his interactions with the other characters. Just when we think we know who he is and what motivates him, he drops this bomb of a story on us, which changes everything, and we gain more empathy and respect for him. Also, it provides the perfect break for the audience after the excitement of the first barrel chase. The writers and director really played chess with the audience in this movie.

The adventure nautical music makes hunting a monster seem fun

I like how the "Know What You Write" tip ties into the "Be Specific, Not Generic" tip from your videos on No Country For Old Men, Fargo, and (if I remember correctly) Forrest Gump (I never knew what I had until I lost it).

The one observation I might add is as a kid I didn't understand the point of Quint smashing the radio. All I registered was the tension it added to an already unbearably tense situation, with Brody now blowing up at Quint, calling him 'certifiable' and waving a bat. But as I saw more and more movies and TV I kept noticing screenwriters prolonging the running time by having an accident or some other coincidence ruining plans just when it looks like the hero is sailing smoothly toward their goal. I get now that breaking the radio is a way to keep the heroes stranded, but the fact that it doesn't happen by accident is wildly important: Quint smashes it by CHOICE. Plotwise this action accomplishes the same function as have it broken by accident, but accident doesn't reveal character! Others have probably been aware of this ages ago but that was a huge lesson for me.

Excellent insight!

There is an important irony in the story. Quint wants to kill the shark alone. He doesn't want help; he even smashes the phone when Brody calls for help. He is the most knowledgeable, most experienced and most confident in killing sharks. Yet, he is the one who was eaten by the shark.

@@ScriptSleuth Thanks for the reply. I just realized that it was even more ironic that Quint talked about a sailor being cut in half along the waist by a shark in the WWII tragedy. And he was killed in exactly the same way. BTW, I really like your analysis. So far yours is the best that I can find on KZread to analyze screenplays of great films. I don't understand why so few views. Is it because of SEO? When I searched key words such as screenplay, screenwriting, I didn't see your channel. I got hooked to your channel only when I searched for videos to better understand the screenplay of Casablanca. I saw your video on Casablanca, then all other great videos about great films on WGA list. I am sure if your channel can get more exposure, people will realize what a gem it is. I have shared your channel with several of my friends who are interested in understanding films. Keep up the good work.

Have you done 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind'? Can't think of a film that entertained me more - hip or not. ☺️

Biggest difference between first seeing "Jaws" in '75 and today - my empathy now lies with the shark. Spielberg and Benchley both regret demonizing him/her, as well. But the real crime? The truly terrible sequels that ensued. Veritable film felonies. :⁠,⁠-⁠)
