Oh I’m so grateful for this. The film seems seriously neglected by the YT essayists. Great video

Thanks. I want to cover the great films that have great writing!
The Wudan sisters fighter such a good scene. Showing the difference between youth and natural talent VS age and experienced skill. Good showing of "Novice with a sword VS a master with anything else". Shu is clearly the superior fighter and would have beaten Jen multiple times if Jen didn't have the "magic special sword". Ending with that great scene of Shu figuring out she can't beat Jen but she can out smart her. Going for a move knowing Jen would break her sword and using that moment to push the broken blade past Jen defense. That one scene could easy be a master class in how to structure a fight scene.
I never saw Jen and Lo as a love story, more of a youthful, passionate sexual affair that they THINK is love. IMHO, what Jen and Lo have Lust. It's like a candle- it burns hot and burns out just as fast. The Love Affair is between Li Mu Bai and Shu Lien. It's understated, but powerful. Intimate yet relaxed and comfortable. It is selfless and self sacrificing. It is a bond that cannot and will not break. It's the Eternal Flame. Li Mu Bai, as He's dying, declares that he would rather haunt Shu Lien then attain the Enlightenment he has always sought. As he says himself, he wasted his whole life not telling Shu Lien how much he loves her. I don't think Lo and Jen ever said "I love you" to one another.

That's true. Besides that, Li Mu Bai also was sexually attracted by Jen as well. There was a hidden desire for him wanting to be her "master", which can also be characterized as "lust".

@@huqiao Li Mu Bai is certainly not without desire, but I don't think his intentions towards Jen were motivated by lust.
Really informative video! I recently watched this movie yesterday and really enjoyed it. Its sad that it doesnt have as much recognition in the youtube essay community.

If you're ever going to do a video for April fools, (2022's has already passed, of course) you should do The Room. Either that or Morbius. I know it's probably a crazy idea, but it would definitely be crazy for next year's April fools.
Such a powerful video and can't wait to watch you bring us some Korean film like Memory of Murders (2003), Oldboy (2003) and The Handmaiden(2016)

Nice summary. Regarding macguffins: The Green Destiny drives the action in CTHD but remains a potent symbol throughout of what is coveted, what it promises its bearer and what it costs. I really like the hair pin at the end, especially when Shu Lien puts it in Jen's hair while sending her off and telling her to always be true to herself. Despite everything that's happened, it's Shu Lien giving Jen her blessing. Because of this, I'm in the minority of those who put a more positive spin on the ending. Jen leaves Lo with his wish that might come true, then plunges forward seeking her own true destiny.
Great Video!

I'd like to recommend covering basically anything from Park Chan-Wook! Sympathy for Lady Vengeance is my personal favorite that I've broken down over the years with friends, but The Handmaiden is also astounding in its plot and pacing, walking a delicate line between the different stories that are woven together. JSA is a great character study tinged with regrets. Although if I'm to suggest one other film from a different director, it would have to be A Bittersweet Life by Kim Jee-Woon. A tragic tale with plenty of symbolism, character building, and consequences. A truly Shakespearean story in my opinion. Absolutely recommend it if you haven't seen it. If you end up reading all of this, thanks so much, this video was great!

Certainly a thousand times the modern marvel, we see the heart of china symbolized by the wielding of a weapon. The symbolism here is who ever holds the main force of china, the emperor, the military, controls the destiny, hence the green jade destiny.
For the sake of nitpicking, that wasnt the Wudan compound, that was Sun Security.

What? Jen killed herself by flying off from the mountain in the end scene? I don't think so.
