I loved the mysteryiousness of the pursuing posse. We barely see them but the way they're spoken of creates such thick palpable tension.

In 1969 I read William Goldman's novelization of the screenplay before seeing the movie. The book is fast-paced and I finished it quickly. After some of my friends had already spoiled (not that badly) the movie for me by sharing the details of the film, William Goldman's book was a good influence and aided in my enjoyment of the movie. I've still got the book.

Brilliant work. This is my favorite film of all time. Redford stole it for me. He really didn’t care much for what you thought of him, and his introduction remains as one of the most bad ass in movie history.

@@ScriptSleuth I think Redford was a very underrated actor because of his good looks, Robert Shaw said he could easily out-do Redford when they appeared on screen together in The sting but could not out-do Newman in the same way, what do you feel he meant?

@@markant9534 Good question! It sounds like he was saying Paul Newman was a better actor than Redford. Speaking of The Sting, that will definitely make its way into the Script Sleuth analysis!

The knife fight scene is one of a few in the movie in which the actors do not quite speak the dialogue as the screenplay has written it. In film, the adaptation is an evolutionary process wherein certain things don't quite translate with the directorial vision or the acting. In that way it is its own form of the old saying "The map is not the territory". Exceptional work guys.

I watched this film with my then 13 year old son. After the movie, I asked him his view, on when their execution at the end became inevitable. After a quite interesting discussion, we were talking about their life choices as far back as school. Quite the discussion! Choosing the life of a bank robber, it was done already. What led to that choice in turn. We are most of us hemmed in or directed, by decisions already made.....

I really enjoyed the insights of this analysis. But I think when you discussed the fatal flaw of Butch's character, you may have gotten it wrong. You said Butch's fatal flaw was his thinking. I don't agree. His thinking is what led them to continue their enjoyment of robbing banks. Both Butch's and Sundance's fatal flaws were their enjoyment of bank robbing. It was not only exciting, but the rewards of cash money were immediate. To them it beat the toiling of something like ranching that didn't end up in monetary success. Their fatal flaw -- robbing -- ended up killing them. They not only didn't know when to stop, they couldn't. Just my opinion. But thanks for this great video.

You're right: I should have been more clear. Perhaps it's actually the lack of thought and proper planning that's Butch's problem. He flies by the seat of this pants when it comes to money.

Does someone else have this problem where the footage shown and the audio don't match? For example, when he's talking about the train in the antagonist section, the footage showing the train doesn't appear. Edit: Nevermind.

Do think this was plot driven or character driven? What clues helped you decide? What are the secrets to writing chracter driven plots? My struggle to stay with the characters, not force them to decide anything sort of worked...then I insisted on a emotionally satisfying ending...the character figured out how. This is my favorite film of all time becasue each scene has huge emotional rewards...can you guide us how to achieve that? (you already have but I want more) Thank you for your empowering work!

Character drives plot, but you can only reveal true character through actions. Never forget that your characters are human beings (usually). How do they feel in each scene? What do they WANT more than anything? And the big ingredient in this film: stakes. If Butch and Sundance fail, they die. And yet they bring all the problems upon themselves.
