#Javelin148 #Blender3d #JavelinMissile
The Javelin FGM-148 is an anti-tank missile that locks on to the infrared image of a target. The soldier picks several targets and attack kinds by peering through a command launch unit.
Javelin is a fire-and-forget missile with autonomous self-guidance and lock-on before launch. When assaulting armoured vehicles, the system uses a top-attack flight profile, striking the normally thinner top armour, although it may also launch a direct attack on structures, targets too near for top attack, targets under obstructions, and helicopters. Recently it has been used in Ukraine against the Russian invasion where it has been proved as a lethal weapon. Enough said let go to the detail of its operation and how it works.
Breaking it down the Javelin Missile is divided into 7 parts,
1)The sensors which guides the missile to its Target.
2)A small "precursor charge" that can be used to overcome reactive armour or other impediments.
3)The Guidance System which is the brain of the Missile along with the Sensor.
4)The Main Charge which is detonated after the Precursor.
5)The Main Flight Motor using conventional rocket propellant.
6)The v Stabilizing the Missile.
7)And last part of the missile is the Launch Motor, engaged just to clear some space for the soldier....
The gunner carries a reusable Command Launch Unit (in addition to the Launch Tube Assembly), often known as a C L U also pronounced "clue", which is the two-part system's aiming component.
The CLU includes three views that may be used to detect, target, and fire the missile. It can also be used as a portable thermal sight when not attached to the missile.
The Launch Tube Assembly, which houses the missile and protects it from severe circumstances, is carried by both the gunner and the ammo bearer.
The tube also features built-in electronics and a locking hinge system, allowing for quick and easy attachment and removal of the missile from the Command Launch Unit.
It has a length of 1.1 metre or 43 inches with a barrel of 1.2 metre or 47 inches with a diametre of 142 mm or 5.6 inches.
The Warhead weigh around 19 pound or 8.4 KG
This can pierce armour with a thickness of 600 to 800 mm Rolled homogeneous armour.
It has a maximum firing range is 2500 metres. A variant of the Javelin with a range of 4750 metres was recently created by the company.
This is the trajectory of the javelin the soldier could assign at a push of a button, which we will elaborate later.

Credits for Video Corrections 1)Mark of Distinction I was one of the engineers that helped develop the infrared sensor in the nose of the missile, and was the responsible project engineer for about 80% of the sensors produced. This video was well done and quite accurate. I can say that its a 66x66 Mercury-Cadmium-Telluride long wavelength sensor. The long wavelength allows it to not only see in the dark, but also through smoke and fog. 2)Andrei Casiadi 2:16 You didn't mention about it's short battery life, and it can operate in seeking mode for about 2 minutes, then it has to cool off. Also the thermal imaging is only 64x64 pixels so it can be fool by something other heat source. I heard it can be fooled by aerosol smoke. It's also not very easeful in the city fight. Looks like the tank has to have 2nd layer of dynamic cover or active armor protection system. But it's a very dangerous weapon for the older tanks and if used in right hands at right time. 3)elkski Utah 2:00 very good animation.. you called them fins , some call them wings. they were originally called strakes and the rear were fins. Diameter to 5.6" from the original 5? I think 5.6 is the carbon tube diameter 4)Jonas Ingi Ragnarsson- I think the missile diameter is 127 mm. 5)MM= milimeter thanks to Myles Willis. (Changing to new Voice Over Artist) 6)Jorell Dye The whole assembly may be $250,000, but the missiles are $78,000 (Source: Pentagon 2021 budget report) 7) Colonel Terry Rowe, US Amy, Retired I was the Test Officer for 85% of the Service Test of the TOW Antitank Missile System at Ft Benning GA 1977-79 ( another officer had to complete the test because I had volunteered for a second tour in Vietnam). It was apparent that the TOW was a revolutionary improvement over the current 106mm Recoilless Rifle which was ineffective against a moving tank beyond 500 meters. It was clear to me that antitank missiles would eventually neutralize the overwhelming advantage of tanks on the battlefield (I had previously served with a US mechanized Infantry unit in Germany on the Czech border and we knew we were vulnerable to attack by the Soviet 5th Tank Guards Army). The light years improvement of the Javelin over the TOW takes my breath away in so many aspects! Incidentally, the TOW missile was considered very expensive at that time at $2,000 per! At the time I was also the Test Officer for mortar systems and I had the "crazy" idea we should develop mortar round that on a small parachute (used for illumination rounds) with an infrared source could attack tanks at their thin top armor. Nobody would listen. Anyway, a great explanation of the Javelin! Colonel Terry Rowe, US Amy, Retired. P.S Military Technology Data are a little tough to get our hands on and also classified and most of them are in a very grey area, but we will try our best as average Engineers and 3d Animators to bring out the best in a very Minimalistic or Simple Explanation. We take full responsibility for our mistakes.

@Сергей Захаров I have never heard of an active war which showed one side holding back their supposedly superior weapons for half a year to safe them for later. T-90s are being used and destroyed just like all the other tanks. There is no Russian armada waiting for the right moment to strike, while their comrades have such serious trouble on the battlefield. It’s been eight months now, face reality.

Regarding 4:06, the metal liner at the front of the Shaped Charge is a cone usually made of copper. The cone shape forms a hollow cavity at the front end of the high explosive charge. The cone shape is there to achieve the Monroe Effect by which the blast energy of the high explosive charge becomes focused for concentrated penetration through the point of contact of the target. A shaped charge works like an explosive lens.

Very important details: the CLU's thermal sight is a line scan camera, basically a line of pixels getting scanned across the scene rapidly. The seeker on the missile however, is not a linescan camera, but instead a starring array sensor. It has the same imaging principle as a modern visible light camera. I believe the pixel count on the seeker is either 64*64 or 80*80, and is faster than 60 Hz; still have to dig up the files

I am also interested in the framerate of the sensor in the missile head. It is probably over 60 fps (but it is usually a military secret) The US has always banned IR thermal sensors operating at more than 9 fps. I'm into programming and electronics as a hobby, and for civilian use, it's very hard (legally impossible) to get a decent IR sensor with long range and decent fps in the west. All thermal cameras work at 7 to 9 fps or if they have higher fps, then they are of poor quality and cannot see beyond 7 to 10 meters. I deliberately mentioned "IR thermal" sensors, so that no one would confuse them with Near IR (near infrared) sensors, which are easily available and cheap.

I'm located in Canada and it is equally hard to get these sensors/cameraa, how ever if you wanted to get an uncooled microbolometer one for projects i could help out :) I have been collecting them for the past decade... good job on clarifying the wavelength of these sensors! For other nerds or soon to be nerds, the *rough* range of detectable wavelengths are listed as follow: "Normal" cameras: 400-800nm Intensified night vision: 500-1100nm Laser range finders: 905nm (pulsed semiconductor), 1024nm (pulsed Nd:YAG or YVO4), 1550nm (pulsed erbium) Laser guided missiles: 1024nm or 1550nm (1550nm lasers are modern and are undetectable by night vision goggles which make them extremely deadly) Javelin and most heat seekers (cooled quantum detectors): 3000-5000nm Thermal scopes (uncooled microbolometers): 7000-14000nm

The missile knows where it is at all times. It knows this because it knows where it isn't. By subtracting where it is from where it isn't, or where it isn't from where it is (whichever is greater), it obtains a difference, or deviation. The guidance subsystem uses deviations to generate corrective commands to drive the missile from a position where it is to a position where it isn't, and arriving at a position where it wasn't, it now is. Consequently, the position where it is, is now the position that it wasn't, and it follows that the position that it was, is now the position that it isn't. In the event that the position that it is in is not the position that it wasn't, the system has acquired a variation, the variation being the difference between where the missile is, and where it wasn't. If variation is considered to be a significant factor, it too may be corrected by the GEA. However, the missile must also know where it was. The missile guidance computer scenario works as follows. Because a variation has modified some of the information the missile has obtained, it is not sure just where it is. However, it is sure where it isn't, within reason, and it knows where it was. It now subtracts where it should be from where it wasn't, or vice-versa, and by differentiating this from the algebraic sum of where it shouldn't be, and where it was, it is able to obtain the deviation and its variation, which is called error.

It is only the United States and some English speaking countries that refuse to use the KPS measurements. PS I am Australian and learned physics from an American book that did use the Metric measurements. It is just that the USA is so backward in not using it. By the way mils is a volume measurement being 1 mm cubed. Not the same as a linear mm.

You didn't mention about it's short battery life, and it can operate in seeking mode for about 2 minutes, then it has to cool off.

No it doesn’t. Just because tanks can be killed doesn’t make them obsolete. Lots of other battlefield assets can be killed but they are still used. Ask yourself how an army is supposed launch a full scale attack without tanks as a spearhead? What other battlefield asset can engage the enemy as quickly with as much heavy firepower as a tank? What other weapon system has as much firepower on a mobile platform? Time and time again when military technology moves on, ‘experts’ declare that tanks are obsolete as the battleship, yet somehow they keep coming back into relevancy. Make no mistake, tanks are an important component of the combined arms manoeuvre of the modern battlefield.

Random fun facts about the javellin system. The soft prelaunch system is similar to tge airbag inflator in a car. Sometimes it will fail to ignite the main rocket motor giving a bit of a scare but no worries it wont arm unless a minimum G and distance from the CLU is detected. The CLU is powered by a battery with a small argon cylinder in it the argon cools the sensor and the battery is just that. The missile itself also has an argon tank that is activated once the first trigger is pulled enabling lock- use it or lose it. You have about 3 minutes to launch, plenty of time. The second trigger actually launches it. Once it has lock and launch is sucessful, it is 100% gonna hit the target unless something intercepts it physically, they are a very confident system. 🤓

$250,000 for one missle might seem like a lot but if it takes out a 10 million tank then its worth.

I still don’t understand one thing through, if the precursor charge has to make a contact against the reactive explosive armor to detonate, wouldn’t that cause the explosive armor to react and explode? Would that explosion not damage the rest of the javelin missile and cause it to fail? How does the javelin survive this explosion long enough to activate the main warhead? Thanks

Good Question. Yes that's the trick the Javelin wants the reactive amour to explode for the second stage of Explosive to do it's job and passed though the armour of the Tank
