@@TheOneAndOnlyVaYnE Horrific take that demonstrates your clear lack of knowledge on how salary caps work. Lions didn't have a choice but to pay their 3 core guys the amount they did because of A) how much other teams paid their own core guys and/or B) how much the other teams *will* pay their own guys when it's their time to extend their contract in the near future. Lions were actually very smart paying their guys right now, because if they waited any longer and waited until other teams paid their guys, Lions would have had to pay their guys even more. Salary caps also always go up, and in 2-3 years you'll look back at what Goff got and think it's very reasonable when other QB's like Dak for example who get 60-65+ million/year deals.

The Packers are a solid team that will have good seasons and probably season split a lot with the Lions but I’m sorry, the Lions overall roster is way more talented than the Packers and they finally have good ownership, a smart front office and a coach that actually created an identity and team culture. Interesting how similar those stats were since the trade. I remember thinking stats wise, the beginning of both of their careers was kinda similar too and I wondered at the time if Jared would grow into being just as viable as Matt. Seems like the Rams put too much emphasis on that SB loss to the Pats and that pushed them over the edge on wanting him out of town. Reminds me of when the Vikes cut their rookie kicker Carlson because he missed a bunch of kicks at the beginning of the season and cost them a rivalry win in GB, which Spielman says was his greatest regret as GM. Public opinion loves gut decisions based on small sample sizes in the moment, but hindsight has never had to wear glasses to date.

$60 million per year? That's insane! I get that the QB position is the most important position in football. But it's a team game. Overpaying at one position means the team will be underpaying at all the other positions. It's as simple as that. Goff is a pretty good quarterback and certainly deserves to be paid well. But 23 percent of the total of all the salaries foe a 55 player roster? It is far more likely that this move will hamstring the rest of the team than put the Lions in a Super Bowl.

Jared Goff had ABSOLUTELY NOBODY TO THROW TO DURING HIS first year. Being a 4th round draft pick it took Wide Receiver Amon Ra St Brown half his rookie season to get on the field waiting for other Wide receivers to be benched or injured to get PRACTICE TIME let alone GAME TIME. Look up other wide receivers and tell me there was a starting wr that year other than 4th rounder St Brown. He started late in the year and we started winning games. Goffs rookie year he had no offensive line due to injuries but they drafted not 1 but 2 future All-Pros in Sewell and St Brown. It took a year for Goff to get on a roll and another half year for the Lions defense to do their part as well.

@@charsiniganhoodish I understand what you’re saying but those were the weapons and not bad ones. Swift was never really leaned on in Detroit either. He was banged up a lot but would play usually not just that one season. Im not a huge Swift fan but that’s the truth. Hockenson is a Top 5 Tight End in the NFL. Didn’t Brady efficiently run an offense consisting of David Patten and Troy Brown as his weapons? Both I think under 6’. Nobody would say they were superstar weapons. But elite QBs can elevate average talent. Goff isn’t quite that. He doesn’t have as strong of an arm as Brady and can’t utilize deep threats the way Brady can. If any bit of the timing of the route is off by the receiver Goff tends to struggle on improvised throws especially deep. Hence his struggles with JAMO. Im happy for a great season though and excited yet nervous for the future.

But I have always been a Lions fan catching crap from bears and packers fans in the area and now I feel like I have been helping shovel the coal into engine of this tank that everyone is trying to jump on now. Nope, they overpaid for Goff by a lot, its going to hurt them long term because they can't afford to keep all their players. Paying for one WWR and one Offensive linemen is not going to be enough. They are lucky they are in a weak division.

Goff has improved, I'd say. He's a guy who definitely needed some time to bake and get into his prime. But he's not going to carry a franchise. His previous contract was pretty good for the lions. It was ridiculous at the time he signed it, but in today's market Goff was pretty reasonably priced. Now he's right up there with the top of the market at 53/yr AAV....you can't win with Goff at top QB money. You can win with Goff at middle priced QB money
