Japanese TYPE 74 Main Battle Tank Overview | THE TOO LATE TANK

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Development of the new Japanese MBT to supplement the Type 61 commenced in the early 1960s, when it was realized that the Type 61 would not be able to counter the threat posed by the latest Soviet designs such as the T-62. The new Japanese tank was designed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. The first prototype was completed in 1969. The first production vehicle was completed in 1975. This tank uses a number of best features of contemporary Western designs, placing it in the same class as the M60 Patton and Leopard 1. However it saw widespread use only in 1980s, when more capable Western designs were introduced. So the Type 74 was generally out-dated even before it entered service. Production ended in 1989 and about 890 tanks built. Japanese Ground Self Defense Force is the only operator of this MBT, as this county laws do not allow to export military equipment.
A cast turret of the Type 74 is broadly similar to that of the French AMX-30. This main battle tank is armed with a fuly-stabilized 105 mm rifled gun. It is the British L7 gun, manufactured in Japan under license. Prototype of the Type 74 was fitted with an autoloader, however it proved too complex and expensive, and was removed. Initially the Type 74 used HEP rounds. These were later upgraded to APFDSD and HEAT-MP. A total of 55 rounds are carried for the main gun. 14 rounds are stored in the turret bustle and are ready to use. Remaining rounds are stored in the hull.
Fire control system of this main battle tank was very advanced. For the first time in the world a tank was fitted with advanced computer for ballistic calculations. It also had a laser rangefinder. In service tanks were later upgraded with infra-red imagers.
Secondary armament consists of coaxial 7.62 mm machine gun and a roof-mounted 12.7 mm heavy machine gun.
The Type 74 has an all-welded hull. It fitted with NBC protection and automatic fire suppression systems.
This MBT has a crew of four, including commander, gunner, loader and driver.
The Type 74 is powered by Mitsubishi 10ZF Model 22 air-cooled turbocharged diesel engine, developing 750 hp. This main battle tank has a high power-to-weight ration of 18.9 hp/tonne. Vehicle has a hydropneumatic suspension, allowing this MBT to "sit", "stand", "kneel" or to "lean". This feature was incorporated from the canceled German-US MBT-70 design. The driver can adjust the suspension to suit the type of terrain. It can be fitted with a deep wading kit for crossing of shallow water obstacles up to 2 m deep. Some tanks were fitted with a front-mounted dozer blade. Mine rollers can be attached at the front. This version with mine clearing rollers is referred as the Type 74F.
In the early 1990s the Japanese Ground Self-Defense forces received the new Type 90 main battle tank, which supplemented the Type 74. The ageing Type 74 MBTs are due to be replaced with the latest Type 10 in the JGSDF inventory.
Hope you enjoy!!

@Ronaldo Mendoza Jr because Japan is never gonna sell their arms. To anyone period. Though the actual guns and armour may be old their fire control systems and general combat systems is literally top of the line. The type 90 had the best combat systems in the world until recently. Where the type 10 came out and beat it. The type 16 though it's design is old (it's more or less a 50 year old design) still works well thanks to the fact every western tank can't fight in southern Japan so at best the type 16 is gonna face ifva and afvs. Both of which is not gonna tank a dm 33 shell.

Type 74 is a good tank and would still be useful for some forces today. It is light and mobile enough to provide fire support in rough terrain. Personally I think that Japan should sell all of them to the Philippines for a bargain price (scrap metal equivalent cost). Of course they are dated for tank on tank battles but can still destroy other armored vehicles, fortifications, and soft targets. Type 74 has been well liked by Japanese users and deserves a second life somewhere where it can be of some use.

  • @stupidburp

Japan should build more Type 10 with an active protection system added in lieu of some of the modular add on armor. It could replace the Type 74 and Type 90 still in service. Supplementing with their wheeled gun platform is fine but they also need to modernize their tank force.

MBTs are pretty much jack of all trades tanks anyways so they just incorporated many other features of the old norms for tanks and the separate tank destroyers which were specifically made to kill tanks, it's just that the MBTs are capable of either infantry support or Anti-tank, making them better than previous generations of tanks

@@poikoi1530 not really? I mean tanks do support infantry but that's not really what they're made for anymore, it would be more accurate to say they also support infantry. Hell depending on the doctrine, sometimes it's the infantry that support the tank. An MBT's job is usually to break through enemy lines or to set up in a defensive position

Japanese naval ammo in WWII and the armor made for its warships had extremely high levels of quality control (not necessarily the best designs, but they made them to the accepted standard very closely) -- better than most foreign manufacturers in some categories, such as the extremely thick face-hardened armor plates made for the YAMATO Class battleships, which had a very uniform hardness pattern, most especially difficult with plates as thick as 26" (!!!!) that were well above the thicknesses made by any foreign manufacturer. The unusual resistance of some experimental Japanese armor (made after battleship production had ceased during the middle and end of WWII and the naval armor engineers could now experiment based on their own modern ideas) was so profound that in the reports on it by the US Naval Proving Ground, Dahlgren, Virginia, after their own penetration tests in the latter half of 1940s, the US test personnel actually said that since they did not know how such good results were even possible with plates made of standard metals (the Japanese were using regular armor steels and just trying out new ways to strengthen and manufacture plates by various unusual heat and mechanical working treatments), the final paragraph in the final report on the US Navy testing of Japanese heavy naval armor was forced to state that it was now obvious that the US Navy experts on armor design did not understand how face-hardened armor works, which was an amazingly honest (and profoundly embarrassing) thing to say in an official report! THAT is the level of Japanese engineering and is a true warning about what the Japanese were going to do to several US industries post-war...

Well I think this could definitely surprise soldiers not familiar with it on an initial engagement. Most tankers and antitank teams are familiar with roll-forward-roll-back pop up fighting positions. They aren't expecting a tank to tip sideways to clear it's gun around a hill to fire at them.
