I love when you do the first reaction and then do the lyrics reaction, but I understand that not everyone wants both. Also: this is so obvious now, but I just noticed that Yoohyeon sings "I will cross over" in the middle of the song. And the imagery shows her flickering back and forth and then stabilizing, which to me suggests the act of moving from one world to another. So I definitely think this video relates to the nightmare world she is trapped in where we see the portal closing in You & I. Then What and Piri are about her attempts to free herself and the other members to retrieve her, and Breaking Out is where they succeed. In terms of the ending, the red threads represent lines of fate (this is a common trope you'll see in kdramas). So they're not freeing themselves from fate, but rather working through the various lines to find each other so they can all be together as they walk into their future, which is what they accomplish by the end of the video. We do see one of the red threads in flames at one point. That may be because Yoohyeon has been freed and so any of the threads of fate that had her as trapped forever get burned away since she is now free.

Breaking Out continues after Piri. Dreamcatcher were left trapped and separated in the Nightmare World by the Spider Queen, the evil spirit who cursed them into being Nightmares in Fly High. After they escaped (Chase Me, Good Night), they returned into being human and living in the real world, acting as Dreamcatchers and making people's nightmares go away. However, the Spider Queen found them and trapped Yoohyeon in a barren dream world in You and I. The rest search for her in What (x4) and are eventually captured in Piri, and losing one another. In the end of Piri, we were informed that they couldn't escape in the end, but their last act was them returning, holding hands, right after disappearing. In Breaking Out, Dreamcatcher manage to break out from the Red Threads of Fate and reunite, fulfilling the last scene of Piri and ending the Nightmare. Finally, there is a nice little bombastic b-side song in their 2019 mini album Raid of Dream (Deja Vu), that's called The Curse of the Spider. There is no MV, but they've performed it live in their 2020-2021 online concerts. I think it was also in their legendary live concert Crossroads Part 2: Dystopia (watch on KZread). But this song doesn't add more to the end of the story. Breaking Out was released in their Japanese Studio Album in 2019, called The Beginning of the End. This was also their first full Studio Album ever produced (making their Korean albums Dystopia:Tree of Language and Apocalypse: Save Us actually their second and third albums). TBotE was produced in a collaboration with the big Japanese company Pony Canyon (the company behind Band Maid) and their distributor in Japan. This collaboration lasted until the Summer 2021, when DC announced that they would not renew their contract. Maybe Sony, their new international distributor, had something to do with it, or maybe they won't return to Japan. We don't know yet. For now, the amazing, incredible and super underestimated Eclipse (2021) was their last Japanese song ever.

TMI: The minimalist style in Breaking Out and What (both Japanese and Korean versions), and also in their J-Rock-Metal songs in Japanese, No More and Don't Light My Fire, is because the MV's were produced by PonyCan and the fashion was address for the Japanese market (notice the interesting difference between Korean and Japanese styling, hair and makeup). In the PonyCan MV's, the colors are simple and underwhelming and the fashion promoted and the hairstyles (like Handong's orange hair in What) was new to Dreamcatcher, who were used in wearing uniform clothing until then. Yet more TMI: I remember watching a Dreamcatcher Note about the making of the two versions of What in Japan, and I think it was either made in Tokyo, or Kobe. Everybody in the crew around them, even the hair and makeup artists, were Japanese. However, Dreamcatcher were communicating easily with them. Also, at the time, JiU and Siyeon appeared on a Japanese radio show hosted by a famous Japanese-Korean producer who interviewed them (I don''t know if it was Yoohna), and they spoke good Japanese, especially Siyeon. Japan is actually the country with the second largest number of InSomnia in the world.

A little late but for some reason I missed this video before! I think most people consider Breaking Out to be set after PIRI, but I see so many parallels between the two MVs that to me it feels like a retelling. You noticed the same things I did, they're still stuck at the end of the video. In PIRI, they're in a maze, and confronted with different fears, and at the end they're all holding hands, but they're still stuck. Breaking Out seems to be the same story, just maybe a bit more optimistic. But instead of a maze, there are the red strings, and again, at the end they have found each other, but they're still stuck. So whether or not it's set after PIRI or if it's the same story just told in a different way, and whether or not they actually escaped, the fact that they are together seems to be the most important 😊

Siempre quedó con ganas de más al ver tus reacciones de Dreamcatcher, sin duda mi favorita hispanohablante.... Y si, también interpreto que para poder salir de esa pesadilla tienen que trabajar unidas así como cuando comenzó con la maldición en chase me "juntas" si te pones a detallar hay mucha referencia de Jiu cómo liderando una carga de la cual logra soltar, y a Yoohyeon quien al recibir la maldición tras matar a la araña hizo que entrara sobre ella ( se pueden ver dos facetas de Yoohyeon a través de la serie nightmare una buena y otra mala) y logra volver a ser ella misma, acepta la ayuda del resto lo que hace que logré liberarse ella y las demás .... Esa es mi interpretación pero nunca habrá una respuesta correcta, los mismos historiadores de la saga y miembros de DCC han dicho que no darán una revelación de la verdadera historia porque perdería el interés los fans de buscar la verdad jajajaja, por lo que cualquiera que sea tu interpretación con tal tenga lógica estaría bien
