Joji grew up in Japan, but he studied at a Canadian school. Only moved to the States when he was 18. So Japanese is definitely his first language, and English was something he must have picked up super early on, and probably used among his friends.

Using "zo" "ze" is an informal way of saying something. Its like an identifier that another person is your friend or family member. Its especially prevalent in Southern Japan where my family is from. There is also "Kei" It's like how Canadians use "Aye" when they talk. "How ya doing there aye?!" Wow I think German is the most beautiful sounding language. I've always wanted to learn it. I went to school for linguistics, journalism, and literature. I know that because German and English are 1st cousins, I would have an easy time learning it.

@BladeCast It's hard to explain. My best advice is to forget watching anime and watch Japanese drama. There you will listen to both formal, and informal Japanese. But prepared to be bored. Japanese drama is like an Italian Opera. An episode will last a week and everyone dies at the end.

Adding zu or ze at the end of the sentence in Japanese is more akin to establishing dominance. Which is why only male would use such form. To use it in real life, the most appropriate way to use it is during a battle in war or as an emperor declaring a statement. Which is very rare. Papa Franku does it to establish dominance as a character he plays which is part of the comedy.

My dad was born and raised in Germany until he was 18-19. His step dad convinced him to come to America. He's been drowning in English and he still pronounces english "th" with like just "t". Told me that "th" isn't used very commonly or at all in Germany.

@@anyan1925 We were all used to his accent didn't really notice it until all the teachers that had teacher conferences with asked about my dad if he was foreign. We were all like: I don't know? We were so used to his accent that it was like a norm. I think I said this in a different comment but he grew up in Reutlingen. Still a die-hard soccer fan. When he moved to the states and was the kicker in a football team for his senior class because he can kick a football I think like 60 yards or something like that. He was getting pissed because XM had shit soccer channels and when Spectrum cable charges him for sport packages and he still has to like dig through ESPN to find games.

I thought the Japanese for "I love you" was "aishiteru" or "aishiteru yo"? Is this a dialect thing as well?

No it's not a dialect thing, you're right! If you were to literally translate "I love you", that's probably what would come up, but it is VERY rarely used in Japanese. As I mentioned before, Japanese people generally dislike being direct, so they'll go with "Suki da yo" to express that they like/love someone. "Aishiteru" expresses a much deeper form of love and isn't used casually in Japanese.
