Actually this is called monomane in Japan where they try to imitate someone. And whether they are imitating a Japanese person or a foreigner if you ever watch these shows you will notice a lot of them will do an overexaggeration of the person regardless of whether they are Japanese or not. Still, the act of painting the face black and stuff I guess could be considered offensive to some, but I never felt this to be a problem as they are imitating the person often times because they loved that artist.

I am Japanese. Japanese people have a characteristic of feeling that people from outside of Japan are rare, whether they are white or black. I don't know the exact reason, but it may have something to do with the fact that we have been closed the country for many years and we are an island nation. It is an unusual existence, but there is no negative feeling about it. It's like the celebrities on TV. At the Osaka Expo held in 1970, there were even Japanese people who asked ordinary foreigners to take their picture. Far from being racist, most Japanese people respect foreigners, whether they are white or black. The performance in this video is also done in his honor.

I didn't know this was Koichi Yamadera
It's funny seeing him struggle to imitate Louis armstrong. He'll get really into it and then hit a word Japanese people have a hard time with, and the Japanese just comes bleeding through, and at 0:28 you can see him trying to fight through it.

VerdiKtagrad Forget the clowns, white folks have played indians in movies since movies started, I never heard one person ever complain about white folks painting their faces red but put black paint on a face and people cry racism. Any person on this earth with grey hair remembers when being black was illegal, so don't give me any "it was so long ago" stuff. He did a dope impression for an Asian person, but you have people who were alive back then who would and could find this offensive. Just because YOU don't doesn't mean somebody else doesn't.

No.. im black and i can confirm that this is racist. Black facing was made to made to make fun of us. Like we're unusual or freaks. Doing black face nowadays and saying it isn't racist is like brandishing the confederate flag, imperial flag or Nazi flag and saying you're not racist. That action was used in a racist and disgusting way during it's creation.( and to participate in that action now is still bad.)
