Japanese Jujutsu vs Brazilian Jiu Jitsu(NAGA Championships)

Спорт

I am Japanese Jujutsuka with incorporated Judo newaza. I went in with 4 months of training against more experienced Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioners. I came in 2nd place. The last match is not in this film. But I lost stamina due to my ill preparation with no sleep and driving 4 hours and going straight into competition that morning. I lost the last match due to the point system of BJJ since the fight went to decision. I had a last second sankaku jime(triangle choke) that I did not have time to complete.
Hopefully I can take home the gold if I decide to do competition again. It was very fun and full of tough opponents. Much tougher than I expected.

Natalia REG i have done both, JJJ has a focus on throws, joint locks and striking. It also has quite a few submissions. Like my teacher likes kimuras and trngl chokes. But bjj has a lot of submissions, sweeps and a few takedowns. Personally, i would reccomend JJJ for a street fight, but Bjj helps a lot if you happen to be weaker *(i am not saying JJJ doesnt, i am just saying Bjj is better for that situation.)

Anybody saying size does not matter is wrong. But a good BJJ practitioner can negate size advantages. Or as the Gracies put it: 20lbs or 20 years equal one belt level. A 50-year-old 150lbs black belt might still lose to a 30-year-old 170lbs physically stronger purple belt. (unlikely though) but he might easily have beaten the same person 5 years earlier when the now purple belt was a white belt.

Jiu jitsu is developed to have advantage over stronger or bigger people than you( Street fight). In competition where both guys know jiu jitsu is like any other sport, you fight in your class division. I did a very similar thing at a NAGA tourney like 10 years ago, as an orange belt in JJJ but I lost badly. I could have won, maybe, but I panicked and forgot all my techniques. In JJJ you'll have the stand-up advantage from randori practice, and on the ground it can really go either way in the early ranks. I think once you start taking on blue belts though your JJJ will fail you.

bjjj came from jjj and judo. jjj was originally designed for Samurai, for the battle field, and had lethal moves. It also had many disciplines, such as kate, striking, grappling, wrestling, weapons use, etc. BJJ only took one of these disciplines and focused on it; the grappling. Much of BJJ techniques originate in JJJ; but BJJ took it a step further incorporating new moves and techniques. Russian Sambo also had its birthplace in Judo; incorporating it, with at least 6 different grappling and wrestling ars from across the former Russian Empire.

Those bringing up "size", or "level of competition". Both grading's for JJJ and BJJ differ. Technically speaking the Jujutsuka went in as white belt, as he was at a BJJ Competition and was representing his Art. This guy went in representing his style of JJJ and solely relied on technique, so size is out the equation. JJJ and BJJ are not entirely similar. While BJJ focuses on groundwork, JJJ is designed for (self defence), which primarily focuses on stand up, leverage, pressure points, lethal blows, and basic ground work. Some aspects within the art can be used for competitions, even though its not geared towards combat sport. I guess it just depends on how you train. BJJ fanboys need to realize no style is superior to another.. It depends on the practitioner as well as level of commitment. respect to the Jujutsuka well done for coming 2nd place.

Japanese traditional Jiu-Jitsu goes way back to the samurai, maybe even to the chinese monks.. but.... "Jiu-Jitsu" is an older romanization that was the original spelling of the art in the West, and it is still in common use, where as the modern Hepburn romanization is "jūjutsu". When Maeda left Japan, judo was still often referred to as "Kano jiu-jitsu",[14] or, even more generically, simply as "jiu-jitsu".[15][16] Higashi, the co-author of "Kano Jiu-Jitsu"[14] wrote in the foreword: Some confusion has arisen over the employment of the term 'jiudo'. To make the matter clear I will state that jiudo is the term selected by Professor Kano as describing his system more accurately than jiu-jitsu does. Professor Kano is one of the leading educators of Japan, and it is natural that he should cast about for the technical word that would most accurately describe his system. But the Japanese people generally still cling to the more popular nomenclature and call it jiu-jitsu.[14] Outside Japan, however, this distinction was noted even less. Thus, when Maeda and Satake arrived in Brazil in 1914, every newspaper announced their art as being "jiu-jitsu" despite both men being Kodokan judoka.[3] It was not until 1925 that the Japanese government itself officially mandated that the correct name for the martial art taught in the Japanese public schools should be "judo" rather than "jujutsu".[17] In Brazil, the art is still called "jiu-jitsu". When the Gracies went to the United States to spread their art, they used the terms "Brazilian jiu-jitsu" and "Gracie Jiu-Jitsu" to differentiate from the already present styles using similar-sounding names. In a 1994 interview with Yoshinori Nishi, Hélio Gracie said, that he didn´t even know the word of judo itself, until the sport came in the 1950s to Brazil, because he heard that Mitsuyo Maeda called his style "jiu-jitsu".

The thing a lot of traditional martial artists don't take into account is that when you do the sports version of something the sparring becomes a very large proportion of the training and for that reason the training usually gets you closer to the feeling of a real fight. While JJJ guys are wasting time learning hand manipulation techniques and kata's BJJ people are rolling on the ground and Thai boxers are sparring in the ring. I don't want to hear that your Aikido techniques work on the street and a grapplers rolling experience doesn't. Nothing could be further from the truth. What is this stupid situation you are preparing for where you don't want to be on the ground because there's more than one guy? If there's more than one guy you're f*cked anyway no matter what you do. I would say at least 25% of your JJJ training would be completely useless to you in the street even if you could implement everything you were taught perfectly.

@@mikeylitchfield4651 @Mikey Litchfield I guess you know more than Rickson Gracie lol. Even though this is a 10 year old post haha. Still to dumb it down for you if you were to simply get the traditional guys doing the sparring where they learn what a punch feels like and all the other fun stuff sparring brings problem solved. As much as mma has made people stupider about fighting for those who recognize an mma guy who trains 6 days, usually follows a diet supplement plan, sometimes peds adds conditioning weights cardio whatever vs the traditional guy who trains 6-8 hours a week its clearly an apple to oranges comparison. Idc though those who know know.

@@Leonidas3888 Hold on there pal. Richard Gracie was not a JJJ guy. He was BJJ. I've been doing BJJ for two years and JJJ for eight. I don't claim to be an expert on anything but I know the difference between these two styles since I train in both. You're not getting the point of what I'm saying. I would agree I haven't seen a JJJ gym that offers lessons 6 days a week. but even if there is one If you do a side by side comparison the BJJ guys would spend more time on the mat anyway. BJJ focuses on situation sparring for almost half the lesson. The typical JJJ class spends one hour 20 minutes doing drills and kata's and ten minutes on the mat. I don't know how anyone thinks that JJJ has the edge on self defence since this is the case. Also yeah I agree it would be problem solved if the traditional guys made sparring a larger component of their training but they're not going to are they? Instead they're going to continue to j*rk themselves off with their perfect Kata's and forms because actually learning to fight is hard.

Oh boy where to start. NAGA forbits small joint manipulation so no wrist, no toes, no ankles, no knee bar locks, no back sisccor locks, and of course no finger locks making the japanese jujutsu guy fight under these rules is a disgrace. Allow the Japanese jujutsu its entire syllabus of waza in these tournaments and you will see BJJ practioners with broken knees shoulders and wrists. BJJ is judo new-waza and nothing more. Go on Gracies go challange Daito-ryu, Fusen-ryu, Yagyu shinkage-ryu to a match and by a match im not talking with rules im talking about the Koryu way as in fighting the guy as if you were in the Edo period. This is where sport martial arts disgrace themselves to their war ancestors by butchering the technique then having the sheer arrogance to claim the old ways (where their technique even came from) doesnt work.

  • @chaos_omega

Small joints are only fingers an toes... Wrist locks are still legal, most ankle locks are still legal, knee bars are fine (why would you think the knee is a small joint?) Who cares what martial artists call themselves? If you can deliver the goods then the name is unimportant.

+Chaos Omega apparently and twisting of joints is illegal aside from locking of pelvis joint via a leglock but a good old knee twist and break is not allowed I've asked by bjj buddies around town. In koryu jujutsu it's anything goes punches kicks and whats known as "dirty tricks" which gurantee victory over he or art that doesn't have em as bjj is kodokan judo new waza as maeda was not allowed to teach his jujutsu. Seoi nage in jujutsu breaks the elbow shoulder and rotator cuff yet bjj has no nage-waza so another technique they will lose to if they drop all the rules

Chaos Omega some maybe but the majority follow mma rules for insurance reasons while in Japan said nonsense was never an issue in Japan. My issue with bjj is it claims to be jujutsu when it spends all its time in guard thus it's not jujutsu it's judo new waza as jujutsu you never go to the ground or spend that much time on it. Tachi waza and nage waza first along with kansetsu and katame waza for control followed by shime waza for a finish all while standing is real jujutsu which few use anymore aside from us koryu practioners whom don't wanna kill hence why koryu are war arts while bjj like judo are grendai budo and compete

Corey Gravelle I don't believe you (or I) get to say what is or is not jiu-jitsu. BJJ is called jiu-jitsu because when it was taught to the Gracies, judo was still known as Kano jujutsu. Judo is just a modern form of jujutsu, just like BJJ. If you're going to get all worked up about semantics, maybe you are playing around with the wrong hobby. Being hung up on what people call their martial art doesn't seem like something you should waste your time on as a martial artist. As they say, "shut up and train!"
