JAPANESE ANTI-TANK RIFLE vs BOB SEMPLE TANK | 20mm Type 97 AT Rifle Armour Piercing Simulation

The Bob Semple tank was designed by New Zealand during WW2, intended to help defend against a potential Japanese invasion. A threat it may have faced was the Type 97 Automatic Cannon, firing the 20mm Type 100 Armour Piercing Round. The simulation shows what would happen if the round hit 2 different points of the corrugated armour.
The gap between the corrugated plate and main armour creates a simple type of spaced armour, which is known to be effective against AP bullets. This type of armour works via the outer layer shattering the core, making it easier for the main armour to stop the fragments. This theory was used for the Panzer III/IV Schurzen and on modern IFVs with applique armour.
As far as I know, the Bob Semple had the same armour layout around the whole tank (except areas without corrugated armour) so the simulation can be viewed as the Type 100 AP round hitting anywhere on the vehicle with a 10° horizontal angle.
For the simulation the hardness of the components had to be approximated, with the manganese steel being ~400BHN (possible after shot peening or heat treatment), the armour plate being ~300BHN, and the projectile being ~550BHN. It's unclear if this was the intended final armour layout, or just a placeholder until thicker armour plates could have been obtained.

What is shown is a 'production' version of the tank -assuming proper armour plates could be sourced. It would definitely stop 7.7mm rounds and could probably stop this 20mm at 1000m range or >30° angle.

This seems a silly assumption as the entire reason for the corrugation was because proper armour steel couldn't be sourced. If they could source proper armour steel it wouldn't be corrugated as that would be much more difficult to achievem

First of all, I've been watching this guy for such a long time now and I know for a fact he tries to make these simulations as accurate as possible, he wouldn't even let himself post a flawed simulation, hell let alone even exaggerate the penetration or weaken the armor. Second, there's nothing wrong with a 20mm going through a Bob Semple. I firmly believe that the Bob Semple isn't a tank, it's just a weird ass looking tractor with some guns attached. The only thing protecting the crew is some simple sheet metal that at best will stop a 50 BMG at most angles. Anything bigger than that will penetrate with ease. And mind you, the explosion of a 18 inch shell from Yamato is enough to turn all the crew inside the tank into minced meat from 10m away, even if the tank itself doesn't get penetrated. (For those of you wanting to prove me wrong and bitch about all your reasons on why the Bob Semple is the best tank in the world, I know this is a joke, and I had nothing better to do than to add some realism to this comment section.)

I must confess I didn't expect to see this today. And assuming the effective armour values are correct this doesn't bode well for the notion of a 2cm AT rifle round being unable to penetrate the Bob Semple. Wonder what a Bob Semple would stop? M2 Browning? A .50 cal AT rifle? A Pidgeon?

I think the issue about the Bob Semple's armor is not just because it has a spacing rather due to it lacking layers. Curious though what the 20mm Anti tank rifle Japan uses would do against Bob samples armor if it was doubled. 1 Angled plate, flat, angled plate. Would it help at all.

Why do you think NZ was able to stop the US Nuclear Navy from docking here? It wasn't the private Flotilla of yachts. No, it was the fear of the Bob Semple being struck into the heart of the most steadfast of Admirals.

Inaccurate, the armor of the Bob semple is literally made of depleted uranium and empowered by the kiwis, Tests show it can survive a thermonuclear blast at point blank range, APFSDS from modern tanks and a direct Hit from a Maverick. It is by far the most based tank in history. (nigh indestructible)

We all know that the bob semple is capable of stopping up to a hellfire missile, a 250 Megaton Nuclear Explosive, and any known tank round ranging from a T-72 from an Abrams due to it's forcefield, New Zealand didn't send it into battle only because they felt too much pity for the enemy, therefore this simulation is innacurate!

why? it was a good effort given the circumstances, and even at the time they were fully aware it wasn't practical. but they were forced to build it because they needed to know what they *could* build if the situation went that way. remember, this was a country that didn't have the industry available to even build cars at the time.

It is unfortunate that Bob Semple tank cannot survive a hit from an anti tank rifle. Maybe just few more mm of flat armor would had been the key difference between insufficient and barely adequate protection. To me, the unfortunate thing is that people are eager to either criticize or meme about this tank. However, it was genuinely impressive and technically solid vehicle built under war time shortages and haste. What Bob Semple managed to do is nothing short of extraordinary. Instead, people are criticizing it, preferring to do nothing and hope that some higher power saves them. Or in Bob Semple's situation, people would prefer that he would just sit and do nothing to help the army when Japanese are landing on his nation's shores.

Can you also handle ammunition? Not long ago, I happened to find out through a magazine that the Russian 9.3x63mm 254grain (16.5g) 7n33AP is known to penetrate armor of 10mm at 200m. However, it is questionable that the subsonic ammunition, 9x39mm 250grain (16.2g), sp6, can penetrate armor at 100m to 8mm. 9x39mm has only 754J (556 ftlbs) of energy at 305 m/s (1000 fps), while 9.3x63mm is 4890J (3606 ftlb) at 770 m/s (2524 fps). The two ammunition has more than twice the speed of each other and more than six times the kinetic energy difference, but they have almost the same penetration capability. I don't quite understand this. If you don't mind, could you review this as well?
