Japan's Time Attack event of the year! Attack Tsukuba 2023!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Attack Tsukuba brought the variety this year with a huge line up of entrants from Evo and Skylines to Civics and Silvias...and of course, plenty of FD3s RX7's were present as well. This event really is worth the trip and is truly special in size and venue. Tsukuba Circuit is the home of Time Attack!

    I appreciate that! I always struggle on where to land with coverage and knowing Shuboxinc and Narita Dogfight will likely have good coverage of the results, I figured it'd try to show the atmosphere and some of the smaller teams/cars in attendance. There's honestly so much there it could be a four hour video easily. And for sure, I think they doubled down on parking attendants this year versus last year. There was always a whistle going off next to you. Haha

    @@BRICKHOUSESPL that is what I appreciate about this channel. It’s a real enthusiast’s view. I also like the fact that the footage isn’t “over produced”. The production is spot on I think raw enough to convey the sights and sounds but not poorly shot or put together. I think it’s the coolest thing. Everyone knows the frustration of a busy event. Queue jumpers, people blocking your pit exit etc. Japanese culture is so cool

The event results are on the Attack website as well here: www.timeattack.co.jp/4428 A more story based approach is a good idea and would be fun to get there. They're warming up the gear oil/diff/trans/basically anything moving so that way when they go out and give it the beans there's already a little heat in the systems. There isn't much driving time to do that on track - one out lap, one or two attacks, one cool down. You see it in drifting as well - raising the rear and letting the wheels spin in gear. Drifting is a lot of sitting in the pits cold and then go out for your run group without much driving to warm things up and immediately put all the stress on the systems.

    That looked like it was titanium on the door bars. Super interesting part to make out of titanium. But yeah, that's always been the case. American/westerners obsess over pretty welds and Japan has a much more "if it works" approach, said as they flip down their non-auto-darkening helmet or hold their lens shield in one hand and mig with the other. It has definitely improved in recent years though. And for manifolds, Altrack, S&A Auto Create, etc really make some beautiful pieces. But yeah, the beauty of welds and wiring cleanliness aren't generally the strong suit of average Japanese builds.

If it's a dream, it might be worth putting together a portfolio of work and reaching out to shops. I know Japan takes licensing seriously for most businesses and trades, but I'm not sure how much that's looked at in the automotive customization world. Japanese work hours, pay, and lifestyle can be a huge transition (especially for Americans) so it might be worth coming on a 90 day tourist visa at first and volunteering if you've found a shop to potentially work with as a trial run for both of you before selling everything and moving across the world. A couple thousand in plane tickets and hotels will be worth the piece of mind.

Basically, with the size of the event and action on and off track and then the shortened day for me, I knew it would a challenge to go super in depth. And to be honest, I get a bit apprehensive about pestering people (if they're even by their car) during their biggest event of the year even though most everyone is chill (just varying levels of busy). And then subtitles double editing time so it's just a matter of landing on a formula that works. But mindset wise, I'm right there with you - that's the kind of content I want to make. Attack Fuji is around the corner and last year it had more of a regular track day feel with a fraction of the drivers in attendance so that might be a better opportunity. Appreciate the input! Yeah, aftermarket intake plenums are usually called surge tanks. What we call surge tanks (for gasoline) in English are called collector tanks. The T in Tsukuba is silent. You pronounce it sukuba.

  • @BRICKHOUSESPL

    @BRICKHOUSESPL

    Жыл бұрын

    It's not a hard T sound like in English but it's not silent either. Japanese has a separate SU (す) hiragana/sound in their "alphabet," so TSU (つ) is a separate sound and it's more like a smashing of the T and the S together (with the tongue against the roof of your mouth and forcing air through). So you're right, it's not "Teh-sukuba" but it's also not "Sukuba."

    @@Andrew_460 Do you dip "torteeya" chips or "torTILa" chips in salsa? We aren't speaking Spanish when we say "torteeya." Just like we're not speaking French when we say "buffay" instead of "buffit." Those are foreign loan words that we pronounce in a non-English pronunciation. There is no English pronunciation of Tsukuba. It's a proper noun. All English pronunciations of Japanese words are approximations using our roman alphabet to try and match the Japanese sounds. Sometimes it works out well like "sushi" and sometimes it's a terrible fail like onigiri (or anytime an "ri" is used really). Just to note, there's no silent T in front of sushi... because it's written with a different Hiragana (my point previously). I see what you're saying and get the point you're trying to make but it's not that cut and dry. Sure, "Sukuba" sounds more similar to correct pronunciation than "teh-sukuba" (as long as you're pronouncing it more like "skuba" and not "SUkuba). Feel free to timestamp where I said "Teh-sukuba" and I'll check it out but what you might be hearing is tsu said in a more Japanese way...going back to the torteeya vs torTILa example above.

    I think there's definitely a different build philosophies, budgets, and starting points. Sometimes a cars engine was built years ago and now the body is being updated and then the engine will be updated again; kind of just being built in phases. The Autobahn r33 is definitely a good example of a fresh new age build. And the Anshin Jidousha super crazy bnr32 is more of a nostalgic big twin setup. And in the Pro Stock Motorsports R32 is kind of that oem+ track car feel. Definitely lots of different reasons for why cars are built the way they are.
