January 2024 - Advaita Vedanta and the Hard Problem of Consciousness - Swami Sarvapriyananda

#advaita #vedanta #sarvapriyananda
Swami Sarvapriyananda reflects on the five great unsolved questions in philosophy published by Oxford University Press, noting that the first four are directly related to consciousness. He emphasizes the centrality of consciousness to the three main branches of philosophy: metaphysics (what is real), epistemology (how do you know anything), and axiology (values and the purpose of life). From the Advaita Vedanta perspective, Swami Sarvapriyananda asserts that Brahman (existence), Chaitanya (consciousness), and Ananda (bliss) provide a unified answer to these questions.
The discussion then delves into the recent surge in interest in consciousness studies, attributed to advancements in imaging technology, artificial intelligence, and developments in information sciences. Swami Sarvapriyananda introduces the hard problem of consciousness, emphasizing the explanatory gap between brain activity and subjective experience.
Drawing on his experience at Harvard Divinity School and discussions with philosophers, Swami Sarvapriyananda suggests that the philosophy of mind has reached a point of stagnation. He recounts a bet between David Chalmers and Christoph Koch, where Koch predicted the imminent reduction of consciousness to brain activity within 25 years. However, upon reflection, Koch admits to no progress in solving the hard problem.
Swami Sarvapriyananda explores the limitations of AI, noting its success in tasks such as creating art and generating content but highlighting its inability to possess consciousness. He questions why AI cannot be made conscious and argues that consciousness is fundamentally different from other cognitive functions.
The talk concludes with a reference to Gallen Strausen's perspective on the hard problem of matter and consciousness. Evan Thompson's acknowledgment of the Upanishads as the origins of consciousness studies in Indian philosophy is highlighted, setting the stage for a deeper exploration of the Indian perspective on consciousness in the subsequent part of the discussion.

This is one of many interesting speeches I've heard from the swami, also the most satisfying and as far as I can tell, he's not working from a prepared paper. Consciousness does appear to be qualitatively different from the the physical brain. Billions of electrical connections in a lump of grey matter do not give us the mechanism by which consciousness emerges. From the story he told of the two scientists who made a bet, one of them was indulging in Scientism, believing the sciences will provide an answer to all our fundamental questions about existence

I am sorry that the entire speech went on very brilliantly without mentioning the author or the fundamental and formidable logician Jagadguru Adishankara even after uttering his own concept Brahma Satyam Jagat Midhya. There is the greatest need to talk more about Adishankara than at any time before for, all the dialogue among several eminent modern scientists on the hard problem of consciousness was discussed at length in the Sankara Bhashya of Prasthana Traya where the extraordinarily brilliance of one human who is far more superior than any person at any time before or after that he could himself question himself which will not strike to the most modern genius and answer himself adequately and completely so that no doubt remains in the realm of the topic philosophy call it Advaita Vedanta and he is none other than Adi Shankara the Jagadguru.

No matter how sophisticated it may be, an idea is never the thing in itself. A highly complex idea about a bird neither sings nor flies. Therefore, knowledge is and will always be incomplete. It is impossible to measure what consciousness is. It is immeasurable and therefore infinite and timeless. There are no two infinities. Consciousness is one, and the instruments of consciousness reflect it to varying degrees. When all ideas become still, through the understanding that they are limited, there is pure consciousness, which is our true nature. Only consciousness is true happiness, because it is complete.

I greatly enjoy the Swamiji's wonderful talks :) Even though I disagree with him strongly on this point. There is no explanation needed for the subjectivity. The subjectivity is an illusion. Perhaps for evolutionary reasons, biological organisms evolved the skill of pretending that they are having a subjective experience. It helps genes propagate more effectively.

Hard problem of consciousness. Let us start with the definition of an Individual (I) from an Automation Engineer’s perspective: An Individual is made up of body and mind with following functions. Body functions are mainly divided into two: (1) Production and utilization of energy for existence of the Individual and (2) Protect the Individual and preserve the species. Mind functions are (1) Receive information (input) from outside world, (2) process information and understand the need (3) decide and (4) take appropriate actions (output) for supporting the body functions. This definition of an individual seems to be agreeable for both physics and Vedanta. However, the decision making processes are different. From Vedantic perspective, Individual Consciousness (Jeevathma) is the one who understands (the knower) and the decision maker. Further, Jeevathma is illumined by the Universal Consciousness (Paramathma, The Creator). While in Artificial Intelligence (AI), the decisions are made by algorithms (software). Decisions are made with help of the knowledge base accumulated through machine learning and by comparison of accumulated data (from the knowledge base) but not by understanding the issue (First person experience). No consciousness (the ‘knower’) in AI. In our personal experience, we are consciousness, understand and make decisions. Hard problem of consciousness for physics is the identity of Vedantic Jeevathma, the individual consciousness . As there is no physical property / attributes (that a sensor can detect / identify), Jeevathma can not be identified by physics. And this is the challenge and the Hard problem of consciousness. I believe, currently this problem lies outside the realm of physics.

all ques are everyone supposed to be asked oneself least once in lifetime ,Love this conversation I don't want to go in means and methods of branches such as values,reality,mind..etc already had written many thesis on branches :) but vedanta let grabbed the roots Mind rise n come to an existence only when if thers 'thinking' or ' thought occurred ' What's the thought ?or it came from ? sci, scientist, neurosurgn or philosopher can't define this although philosophy only works discussed over material physical existence With possible nearly fit solution n approximation but can't tell principal /facts base one crystal clear error free non bias conclusion that's the limitations of 'philosophy' which can just stretch the outward manner n goes forward direction ,. तत्व मसि While vedanta jumps on very roots that what was even b4 the thoughts like jungle lion grab sheep from n@ck ,by knowing the one ll know everything this is glory of vedanta ,. I do have little sweet concern n humble request plz call vedanta as just 'vedanta knowledge/wisdom' or just as 'vedanta' not as philosophy is different thing still people used to say this that's fine but philosophy is as I mentioned above is phil. hadn't reached/touched the all area with clear solution as compared to 'Vedanta' did,. philosophy is nail clippers while vedanta is sword can't use for nail when philosophy get tired ends gave up vedanti starts from Vedanta don't play role what has already been told or evey1 knows.. but plz let me end here you ahead Swamiji 🚩:)

In the realm where thoughts collide and dreams unfurl, Lies a riddle, deep, that puzzles every mind. It's the mystery of consciousness, a swirling whirl, A journey into the elusive, undefined. In the corridors of thought, where neurons dance, Where senses meet and mingle in a cosmic trance, There's a question that persists, a haunting glance, It's the hard problem of consciousness, a perplexing stance. - Chat GPT

Swamiji - by definition consciousness cannot be defined since that would make it finite. So it can only be experienced. So to even state that it IS non-dual is a category mistake. All the different models of consciousness are to be taken merely as tools to get to the experience of consciousness experiencing itself.

Sir, Arguments that machines though capable generating artificial intelligence are not endowed with consciousness may be invalid in future. Married people breed children who are of course endowed with souls and consciousness. We rear animals and grow plants and trees. What if they use bio chemical elements and produce living beings in future ? Should philosophers accept defeat for that reason ? The aims and paths of science and philosophy will always remain different .
