She was older than me, but we had the same high school English teacher and I attended school with her brother. The day after Janis died, in class, our teacher shared several pieces of art that Janis had done. She was a talented visual artist. Our teacher said she created this character, Pearl, and then "became" that character. She spoke highly of Janis. Once in a lifetime talent.

It is the original pattern of opium addicts ( troubled ) . She would also drink "Southern Comfort" from the bottle. No wonder her liver was shot. She was better off dying from that fix as dying from liver failure is painful, miserable and slow. She did appear a little masculine, in her aggressive performances ; she was showing us her anger and her sadness. I thought her voice was scratchy and vulgar, but there were times when it was just what we wanted to hear. She was unique.

John Cooke (Joplin's road manager) went to Joplin's motel room after producer Paul Rothchild phoned and said Joplin had not arrived for her recording session that day. Cooke said that upon entering Janis's motel room, "I got a strong feeling that nobody was there. Then I came round the corner and saw Janis lying on the floor next to a bed. But that strong feeling that nobody was there, it was absolutely right."

I just felt so sorry for her, died too young. From what I've read and some perceptions of mine, she was a kind, smart, vulnerable person who was lonely - rock life style doing your music doesn't leave you much time for finding relationships. Passed one day after my birthday - Oct. 04, 1970. RIP

That bullying was a death by a thousand cuts long before the heroin and alcohol, which was just self-medicating to give her short-lived pain relief. The arrested development you mention has a lot to say about being emotionally stunted by the bullying. The bullies just could not stand that she made it and made it great, as their bullying is most surely deep seeded from their own childhood

It never fails to amaze me how nasty people can be. High school seems to be harsh for anyone any more, but she was treated so badly most of her life. I mean you'd think the classmates that she had would have grown up by the time she went to her reunion. Great vlog Jordan and my heart really goes out to Janis Joplin. She was one of the greats. I read quite a bit on her life and it was heart breaking knowing how much she got bullied. I read that the only one she would let interview her was Dick Cavett and I don't know why. I can only imagine the hurt and rejection she felt. So sad. Thank you for another great vlog. Your the best...

Sad story. I like Janis' voice and knew 'The Rose' was loosely based on her life, but didn't realize how sad it was. Don't know if you are a country/folk Dan, but Lacy J. Dalton has been termed the 'Janis Joplin of country music' because of her voice, which has that whiskey-soaked quality. Definitely worth a listen...

great and thoughtful content as usual, thank you! I'm new to your channel and recently moved to LA, i'm very curious (and pardon me if you've covered this previously), have you done any vlogging about Mike Watt / Minutemen / D. Boon history? I know Mike still plays a lot around here. D's picture in the beginning of this vlog got me thinking! Thanks so much for your thoughtful content and hard work.

Such a sad story of a special and talented woman. Shallow people always ostracize and ridicule people because they are different. She was different and that's why we loved her. Also,to tell you the truth, I never understood everyone calling her ugly. She may not have been movie star beautiful, but I always thought she was sexy and someone that I would have loved to meet.I started listening to her when I was 11 and still love listening and also watching her video performances 45 years later.

The 27 club Tragic. Janice Joplin heart en soul boomed outta that voice. Isn't it strange that the talent of the onez that die early because of how impactive they were feels like the lived a full life, theres so much of there music still alive out there.

Isn't it sad how people can be so terrible to others! She was a totally unique in her singing style. For her own class mates to not except her after she became famous, and cut her down must have been devastating to her! Messed up! She also died so tragically that her whole life became an enigma. RIP Janice!
