Now in 2021, this is a beautiful reminder of a great conductor, Bernard Haitink. Here in Brahms together with Janinne Jansen and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. Wonderful performance!
Haitink is one of the best Brahms interpreter; Janine's fragile tone is so captivating, and don't let the name of the orchestra fool you, it's a full blown orchestra.
Rest in peace, maestro Haitink 👏👏

Haitink's Brahms symphony performances with the COE are just as wonderful as this 2013 concert; they should be collected in an audio cd-box.

a DVD set would be even better, as goes for his Beethoven Cycle with the COE
unbelievable mastery of the instrument and of Brahms intentions as well.Baravissimo
This symphony speaks to the soul, and promotes spiritual uplift and awakening , and activates the soul
The part from 21:13 till 23:02 is demonstrating an unbelievable level of control and virtuosity ... mind-blowing !

This woman is ferocious - only Heifetz plays this thing better. (This must have been one of Haitink's last gigs. He does such a good job of accompanying her.)
