    How lucky we are as humans to have evolved from a primordial soup into a species that can revel in such beauty as this requiem by Maurice Duruflé. What a gift we have been given.

    I'm not a qualified musical critic and admittable not one to give an opinion on classical works. That being said, dare I say it, Bruckner's music seems to ramble on and on but never goes anywhere. Could someone enlighten me as to why I should be as enthralled as so many others seem to be. This is a serious question and could someone help me.

    My dear friend had this playing at his funeral, along with Piano Trio (Shostakovich), and Piano Concerto No.2 (Rachmaninoff). He had a full orchestra in a cathedral, even though he wasn't religious. He likes these three Russians, as he would call them. "The golden trio." He was an exceptional young fellow, a gentleman. Always dapper, always spoke well, and read a lot too. He was 19 at the age of death, and he knew it was about to happen. Handled it very stoic. When people came around, he asked "Have they swept away the gravel?" (After winter). Or "Did the postman come as usual today?" He knew we all were in grief, but somehow I think he enjoyed it. But the funeral was beautiful, he had structured the songs in a particular order, first the Piano Trio (haunting violin tragedy), then this, and lastly Piano Concerto. He made someone read from the Illiad and some own poems. One of them was: We leave nothing to this world. Our life is for ourselves. And another one about a love of his, I don't know whom: So you look out for the stars Pay attention to the birds And the oceans And hope to glimpse her there And that constant hope Becomes you very reality. He had so many friends you never thought about. It was us at his age, from school and childhood. But then there were people all around the world. Young as old. Men, women. He had a dozen people flying in from Italy that I never knew existed. And they all had such beautiful stories about him. There was a girl too, from the west coast. She loved him uncontrollably, and I knew this would never end for her. For me, the whole thing was so beautiful I wanted to die too.

    It is so amazing from someone like Mahler to be so effective and at the same time so joyful and romantic in his music. Difficult life , lose of a child, difficult marriage to speak of and still at a young age produced such a fantastic symphonies for the whole world really to enjoy. Rest in piece Mahler and maestro Haitlink.

    Here is a little story: I participated in a winter camp where everyone chose a camp name. Some chose "monkey" while others chose "swifty" or "goofy", etc. I chose the name "Grieg" solely because of this very piano concerto. This is a beautiful romantic concerto unlike anything else.

  • @jamescpotter
    @jamescpotter17 күн бұрын

    I cannot think of a more perfect piano concerto than Grieg's. It's note perfect and no wasted notes.

    The problem here is that Bach wrote this specifically with organ type registrations in mind. Even with a simple registration, a single organ key can be playing 5 to 10 or even more pipes. Add more keys, and then pedal, and you can easily have 50 or more tonally varied pipes sounding together. Thus the score is in fact relatively simple to avoid a massive atonal wall of noise. But take that "simple" score to the piano, and the only way you can try to fill in that organ "color", is to make use things like octave doubling (think Busoni). But it still sounds brutally thin. It takes a special kind of genius to transcribe other forms of Bach instrumental works to the piano, and actually add real tonal color. Like Godowsky. His transcriptions of non-piano works to the piano are incredible, and often so difficult, one rarely even hears them in concert.
