Jane Goodall's message of hope

Famed naturalist Jane Goodall has dedicated her life to protecting wildlife and the environment, and at age 87, she continues to reach out to as many people as possible to advocate for a more sustainable future. She talks with correspondent Seth Doane about her new book, "The Book of Hope: A Survival Guide for Trying Times," and about how everyone can contribute to reversing mankind's destruction of our only home.

She's not gentle. I was 9 when she came to our school in sierra leone, aisf (american international school of freetown). She seemed so nice and all, then she asked if we had any questions about chimps. I was 9 then, and asked a quite technical question for a kid that age... and imagine anyway, stripped from country and brought into a severely disabled country, alone... ''if you trained them with exercises, would their muscles pump out like in a bodybuilder manner, becoming more bulged and apparent?''.... instead (probably because she didnt know) she turned the question into something else.... and answered in a demeaning and patronizing way ''pfffft.. don't u know that chimps are already immensely stronger than men''... in such a good acted way, with dissing laughter... she made the whole class laugh at me and make me feel terrible. That was the end of the question. So there is your perfect gentle human. A good person doesn't do that. Continue making the world believe you are this image, but I have seen you. 20-25 years have past and I still remember you crystal clear. I also tried to rectify the question, but you clearly avoided the contact, as you clearly knew you had created a false situation.

She already has a pile of cash and it means nothing to her. She gave us more knowledge than most other scientific studies. She can't take it with her, she is a philanthropist and will most likely leave it for more studies to occur after she is gone. To secure the only home WE, all animals, the earth as it once was because as she said "finite resources" and "the world is falling to pieces." She hasn't had enough time out of the jungles, her studies to spend cash. When she did spend cash, so be it, she earned it by a real job not a sport, singing a song (writers make less money than singer they wrote the song for 🤦‍♀️), etc. She doesn't showcase her wealth....her wealth is of knowledge and her ability to educate the world, if one listens. Let her have her whiskey. She deserves every sip 🥃🥃🥃 and more.

We need more people like Jane Goodall in this world. People don't know that the usual actions by humanity is hurting or destroying our own world, our ecosystem, the very planet Earth that we all home and it's not just affecting animals, but it's affecting our planet and the humans that live on it. Jane Goodall, David Attenborough, Steve Irwin, Fred Rogers. All of them part of the greatest generation of people who dedicated their lives to the creatures that share this planet we live on as our home. But this planet is not owned by us. As Jane Goodall has said: No one anointed us ruler of this kingdom. It's not ours to own. We are simply one of the animal species on this planet, not separate, not superior. We hold in our hands a responsibility to preserve harmony in the natural world, to demonstrate compassion towards all who call this home. So many living creatures have feelings, know loss, suffer pain. We must understand the mutual dependence between humans and animals. Only if we understand, can we care. Only if we care, can all be saved.

I’m glad she mentioned that our planet is finite. This is exactly why we can not have infinite population growth because we are all consumers of this beautiful planet. She is also right that we can all do something. Use cloth shopping bags and cotton mesh bags for produce rather than using disposable plastic bags from the store, eat less meat, buy humanely raised organic meat when you do eat it. View it as an occasional luxury item. Be conscious and wise when using utilities in your home and conserve as much as possible. Buy or make cloth napkins rather than buying paper ones. Refrain from eating fast food as much as possible because of the environmental damage done by factory farmed products sold in fast food establishments and the paper and plastic garbage they generate. Grow some of your own food on a balcony, patio or garden bed. Feed the birds and provide them with fresh water every day. Plant a wild flower meadow which helps pollinators, birds and butterflies. I am sure there is a million more others could think of, but these are just a few things I have challenged myself to do this year. Thank you Jane Goodall for bringing this issue to our attention!

Thank you so much for sharing this interview on utube. I don’t watch much TV anymore…too depressing. This was so inspiring….what an amazing woman, so ahead of her time. Wish we could have at minimum several million more people like her. Let’s all commit to just doing one or two things as she recommended. Love you so much Jane, friend of the planet.

She has had so much wonderful experience with animals. The Chimps and other endangered species and in her elder years is doing so much still. I often wonder what happened to her son. Did he follow in his parents' footsteps? I think they called him Grub. I have had students who volunteered with Roots and Shoots as kids and later went to Africa. Her influence is enormous.

I have two heroes and they look so much alike they could be sisters: Children's Book Illustrator Tasha Tudor out of Vermont and Jane. Tasha has passed on at age 92 June 2008. Both incredible naturalists and the ability to capture one's attention. Jane's efforts will pay off. To all sisters and brothers please wear your masks, get your shots and be well and happy.

What a beautiful lady! She is so right about her message ! We as individuals must each try to do better ! We need to wake up and realize our destructive path and change it to something that is Positive ! After all Mother Earth is Home and deserves to be treated better!

We all found out during the first quarantine, when no one could drive anywhere unnecessary, our smoggiest cities suddenly had clear skies again! So why wouldn't that serve as impetus to do more? Impetus to chuck the car, use bicycles, scooters, buses, and trains more! Keep our clean air!

Most people are so selfish to consider making at least one change in their lives. Most people are not even interested in hearing Jane’s message. I do as much as I can and I know is still not enough. I’m raising my daughter to be conscious of her choices and acts, but I know that’s not enough. I’ve been mocked who knows how many times. People are bothered to hear this kinds of things 🥺
