@@radjedi2010 back in 1997 players were allowed to hide the contact of their serve using their other hand, which is something Wang and waldner were using. By the 1997 top players were taking advantage of it and as a result many points were lost directly from the serve. Bigger ball has also helped to increase length of rallies however it's not as big of a change as the service rule.

While with the 11 scoreline, most of matches nowadays last for less than 100 rallies unless they played 7 sets. And Ive seen many matches with more than 15 of 10 strokes rallies and even matches with more than one 20 strokes rallies. Based on the time it takes for one match to finish, it still show that nowadays rallies are longer in general.

Wang Liquin had notoriously crappy return of serve. There's a match in 1999 against Kreanga and once Kreanga starts serving backhand serves to Wang's forehand he totally collapsed. As you may know it's pretty much impossible to hide the backhand serve. His short game was simply crap for the 38mm ball. He almost lost to an Australian at the 2008 Olympics because he couldn't read his tomahawk serve. Waldner wasn't even the worst match up serving wise for him 'cause he was particularly vulnerable to guys who liked to 3rd ball attack with their backhand like Wang Hao and Schlager.

@@maxk880 unfair? No it’s called a SKILL. Table tennis with a smaller ball, hidden serves required 10x more skill to play. It’s not unfair and people were actually good or bad at it. It was dumbed down to extend point length and rallies in the hopes it would bring mass appeal, which it still has not. Beyond that waldners real strength was in his point construction and strategy and variation in what he could do. The serves were just another strong point

Including a ball change from 38 to 40 mm. Mozart of table tennis was not my saying. World top ten for 20 years. The Chinese newer bothered to try to read him because they knew they could not. 13 years older still he could beat Wang. Given the opportunity of the same age and no bad back, no question.

While Waldner could beat Wang Liqin while both in their primes it would be tough still and maybe only a 50/50. Waldner was great but he definitely wasn't invincible even back then. People like Liu Guoliang gave him a lot of trouble and Jan was even feared by him and his serves during his time, he even stated this himself. Ma Lin was also way ahead of him in terms of skill and ability. But who knows for sure...

groudon4616 Well, Waldner in his prime was the 1989-1992 Waldner that won a WTTC, got a silver medal in the WTTC and won the Olympics easily. If Ma Lin was way ahead of him in skill, then why did Waldner beat him 4-1 in 2004?

I don't think so. The real TT game should be like this. The 40mm ball took spins away from TT.
