For all of you that says it's illegal now: When Waldner played it wasn't illegal, so technically it's the same for every player that played during his time.

Not just his serves... He could literally block down most/many players, drive-block on his BH for outright winners off the other guy's loop... very under-rated part of his game.
He was so good that they changed the rules so the others would have a chance.

The greatest server, and one of the top 5 players, IMO, of all time. You cannot name one player the best as you cannot compare different eras. Waldner's numbers (match wins) over the years were incredible.

Amazing services. But to be honest, I'm glad these kinds of services(hidden services) are now illegal.

Why? All it did was make the serve a less viable option in a game scenario. You can literally see what kind of spin is on the ball every time if you have a good eye and a good receive. Not so fun if you ask me...

How we like to see today in day this kind of moves which today already are not made- Waldner gave table tennis that shine and brilliance that only the loved to do, and displays today continues to do them and everyone applauds! It is fantastic I personally try to imitate some things, but clearly the has a unique talent. And it also has a sense of humor that today is strange. Only have reached that level of humor lately Chuan Chi Yuan and Jean Michel Saive.

Jan Ove Waldner represents the rise and fall of the dominance of the Swedish men table tennis team. He was the man leading the Swedish men table tennis team to win the gold medals of Men's team event of World Table Tennis Championship in 1989, 1991, 1993 and 2000 (the only other time Sweden winning the gold mdeal of men's team event of World Table Tennis Championship was 1973). Wouldn't call him the leader of the 1989 squad. Arguably that was Appelgren.
Did not know him before, but I found my services technique and servicing to corners and edges like him, although I am not so good spinning.
Follow JO Waldner since his Olimpik vs France player during 1980's.
These clips make me realize that JOW isn't as much "the master of placement" as that he just looks that way because he's "The master of deceptive telegraphs"; he has this way of making you think that he's going to place the ball at one place by looking at place and moving in a certain way while in reality aiming for another place; he does this a lot in rallies too where the balls goes to a different direction you expect it to go to.
The good old times. When the ball was smaller and spin played an important role. When TT was played from hand and arm because the floor was slippery, sometimes wood, and you could not jump around like today. When players had to combine brain and decent physics. When, unfortunately, the game was mostly hidden from the spectators. Nowadays, it’s pure athletics but, yes, for the regular audience it looks more spectacular.

The original "You got Served"
J-O Waldner, best swedish table tennis-player that have been existed. Well, according to his accomplishments, he is one of the best. He should be amongst the top 10 in the world. I mean look at it. Swedish championships, gold medals and silver medals only from 1988-2010. That says alot. And yeah, most gold then silver during the time. That means, he was good even if the "hide the ball"-shit services was illegal in the sports. So nope, it was not his services that was his biggest weapon. It was his skills. Period.

GENIUS!
The best there was, the best that is ever going to be.
I miss when we could serve under our arm like this. It looked so cool and set up all kinds of crazy possibilities. If you ask me Table Tennis started going straight to hell with the 11 pt games and the nerfed serve rules. I got on board with the 40mm ball because even though it was awkward at first, you did have a lot more control eventually. But yeah, Table Tennis pre 2000 was the best. I haven't played in 5 years, so I guess....they have different materials for the ball now? And it feels different?

seems like he blocks view of ball when serving. The ball drops behind his non serving arm. Anyone have any input on this?

before the new service rules went into affect a few yrs ago you used to be able to hide the point of contact...when the ball hit your paddle during a serve....and by not seeing the point of contact it was harder for the receiver to read the spin...since he never got to see what spin was imparted on the ball
Hoje em dia sim, a regra mudou em 2000 eu acho

Many a times he used to hide point of contact behind his left hand

Waldner is the best 'gweilo' to have ever played the game.
Since the winning points of the set have been reduced to 11 from 21 I think that it the best call ittf could take by making these services illegal.Losing some points from serves back then is not the same as now with the 11 points required.

Miss old TT, I stopped watching it after they killed the craft by nerfing the rules to try and make it more rallies. Any proper fan would still enjoy the art, pongers just need to accept it's not going to be more popular outside of Asia whatever they do - people turned off by serving skill and the mental side of the game should go and play crown green bowling or darts. Same happened in Tennis making balls heavier, less pressure, bigger. I still enjoy hidden serves playing with friends and it's where the fun is.

Why didnt the others just do the same instead of QQ and make rules changed ?
why illegal? the oppenent can do it too....its just about the skill. if both side can do it , why not"?
