Спорт

Hey what’s going on guys, so I flew over to Sweden to play against who many consider to be the GOAT of table tennis, the 1992 Olympic Champion Jan Ove Waldner. We dive into his career, play some games, learn his formidable serve and test his new Donic blade, the JO Waldner Gold Edition which marks 30 years since JO won his Olympic gold medal!
Enjoy!

I’m 44 now. When I was 8-9 me and my friend went down to the basement of the apartment complex that he lived in to play table tennis - and there were Waldner and Appelgren playing. Our eyes popped out. They were our heroes. We got to play double with them for a short while. I had Appelgren on my team. It’s a memory for life. :) We never saw them there again after that. Appelgren’s father lived in that building. Fun fact: We played almost daily together with another childhood friend. His brother was two years younger than us and not as good, so he only got to play in between our matches. None of us went on to play in a club, but the younger brother did and became one of the best in his age group for a while. He destroyed me with the wrong hand a few years ago. 😂 Funny how destiny rolls out.

As a coach of mine said, that question is a misnomer: The truth is that Waldner made Ma Long possible. You can't really compare them. Ma Long is the GOAT of our time. Waldner is the GOAT of his time. Waldner showed what was possible with the game. The Chinese learned from his skills and improved on them, discovering that power could out play control, but only if that power is played with Waldner-like control in mind. I believe that if we could see Waldner in his prime play Ma Long in his prime, Ma Long would win, but with considerable trouble. In fact, they once played in an actual tournament and Ma Long easily beat him - but Waldner was already pretty much retired by then and not in his prime. I do find it interesting that he has analyzed current Chinese serve technique and uses that in his current game. Still, I have a feeling that Waldner is easily rated 2500+ USATT even at his age. You take someone like Jishan Liang or one of the young, teenagers from the U.S. who are playing at 2650 ish (look at Nandan Naresh), and I bet they'd have a hard time beating Waldner.

Absolutely amazing video. To watch the goat of table tennis give his thoughts and insights of the game is amazing. (and that get around the net was something else as well.)

The interesting part with JO is that it's just so much talent. Like the table tennis gods just blessed one particular man with everything they had. Dude is that type of player who didn't even need practice to be the best

I haven't watched Waldner before. I am kind of taken aback at the angles, grips, stroke paths and all that he uses. It is amazing frankly. My mind is open LOL. Wow!!!
