    🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷👏🏻, Awesome video from Carver. Great skater, for sure. These videos used to get me so stoked. I own like 12 carver skate boards, they are all amazing. I kid you not, carver skateboards awesome, one of the best brands for surf skating. I also own some Loaded boards and all, for going somewhere or even some down hill small actions etc, but carver is always going to be for surf skating one of my favorite brands..

    You sound like a bit of a fanboy. Have you ever tried other brands? I have two Carvers (CX and C7 trucks) and they're nice, well made boards. But are they better than Smoothstar, YOW or Swelltech? Hell no! The C7s will be up for sale because they just don't cut the mustard in comparison.

    I saw that Carver also made Kai Lenny a pro skater. I grew up skating, and that wasn’t a title you just got. I feel like Carver is taking upon itself free license, in a sense, to undermine pro skating. I guess SurfSkating is a newer genre and the bar hasn’t been fully set, but shouldn’t a pro rider certainly have to be setting that bar? I’ve watched about all there is to see on SurfSkating on KZread, and with regard to Kai, I’m not sure it’s merited. He’s probably the greatest big wave surfer of all time. Probably a top pro in a handful of water-sport disciplines, but skating? At least JOB has put down some clips on a SurfSkate, enough so to prove he’s at least where the bar currently is. Even in Kai’s video, you could kind see he felt like he needed to live up to the title yet. Idk. I think it’s kinda disappointing frankly, as SurfSkating isn’t exactly surfing, nor skating, yet $$$ is coming before progression merits it, which will stagnate the sport. Personally, I’m curious to see where SurfSkating can go. I don’t believe this $$$ first by association method engenders that. And like a commenter below, I too would’ve preferred to see Carver put the $$$ back into R&D to keep making the product line better. Has Carver even tried to investigate where SurfSkating can go? Or is it all just about SoCal sales and Malibu money? I mean, I spend hours on these things daily, I have a few suggestions at the very least.

  • @mikeuptegrove

    @@aaronjones5220 I think that’s kinda happening more organically on KZread already. It’s a small community, not a lot of real talent emerging yet. Lots of people riding their names in SurfSkating from careers in surfing. But most serious SurfSkaters aren’t looking towards surfers for inspiration in their practice. In fact, surfers with SurfSkate pro models do very little, if Nothing, to highlight what’s possible in SurfSkating. They get paid for saying they have one and doing basic turns in their driveway, then giving their stamp of approval.

    @@mikeuptegrove Agreed. I've seen a couple foreign kids getting really good on them, but haven't seen much else apart from a couple surf turns in bowls from JOB and Felipe Toledo. I'm really curious to see where it will go, but the best riders i find on youtube are the guys that make Surfskate tutorials. I haven't seen a lot of people really getting into it yet besides that. But I enjoy that too, because I'm able to have a unique skate style because I mainly ride Surfskates, as well as a unique longboard freeride style for the same reason. Would love to see a more developed community that really pushes the possibilities of surfskating as well though

  • @mikeuptegrove

    @mikeuptegrove

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@aaronjones5220 yeah. I’m feeling the same way. I like that there’s yet possibility seemingly. I also like that it’s a rather limited, niche, “community”, yet. I left skating over 20 years ago because it sold out. It started to attract people who didn’t embody the spirit or essence of the sport, because all of a sudden it became popular. So I guess I better be careful what I wish for. As far as the people doing tutorials, I’m not impressed. Most seem to embody the spirit that replaced the one I recall skateboarding representing. Yes, I have seen a few kids in Spain who seemed to be better than decent, but when I look at the publish dates for the videos, they are a half decade old. I sorta think SurfSkating was introduced at the wrong time frankly, and that many just dropped out of it seeing it had no real intrigue yet behind it. Or maybe those guys still skate but don’t make videos. I’ve gone through most, and am pretty unimpressed overall. There’s one guy in South East Asia who had some style. A few in SoCal. And a few in Spain. What’s kinda bothered me is that SurfSkate companies market pro surfers as pro skaters. And when I was a kid, becoming a pro skater wasn’t just a marketing device driven by things other than raw talent and one’s ability to do all the standard tricks, plus having excelled at pushing them to the next level. So for me, Carver, as a skateboard company, breaking these rules, is a bit taboo. But like I said before, skating was sold out, sadly by my heroes, to a poser class of nerds who didn’t embody the non-compliant counter aspect of the roots of the sport. That’s my view anyways. Let’s see where this goes and if the timing is better now. Let’s hope it doesn’t become dominated by a pop-culture poser class like surfing and regular skating.

    So this is where our money goes 🙄. Hey Carver, how about using some of that cash to develop a truck that can compete with the Swelltech, the Smoothstar Thruster and the YOW S5/Meraki. Although well made, your C7 is outclassed in performance. Squeeze another 10-15⁰ rotation and it might come close.

    The other brands turn very unrealistically they turn wayyy easier than a surf board carvers don't allow you to do a wiggle motion to do turns and generate spoed and the boards that turn super easily allow you to do super rotated turns with no speed creating bad habits

  • @Dough29

    @Dough29

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@aaron_jordaan Interesting perspective. That wiggle motion is called using torsion. It's one of the key skills that a surf trainer teaches you. Of course if you're using it just to wiggle then you've got a long way to go, but a board that encourages it is a good thing. Of course if you feel that your board is too loose you can tighten the spring (or change it on a YOW), but the more range of motion IMO, the better. The Carver C7 locks out way too early, disrupts your flow and no matter how much torsion you put into it, it's not going to let you finish the turn.

    @@Dough29 Ya I don't like the c7 I prefer the cx but swelltech doesn't feel like surfing even though it looks like a surfboard, the smooth star on the other hand is probably the best board for flat land surf training but for training on an incline which is more like an actual wave trucks like the cx (not those rubbish smooth star wanna be c7s) are better for that at least that is what my surf coach told me when he recommended a board for me and I agree with his opinion spending a day on the swelltech, carver and smooth star

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@aaron_jordaan not true. All the best surfers generate speed in flat spots from the, “wiggle”. They just do it so well it almost goes undetected. But it’s definitely very crucial to surfing well, and more importantly having style. You cannot compress and extend on every wave. You need to learn how to, “wiggle”, aka use your fins to generate speed through proper technique.
