Exactly. Panting your face to mimic a black person is different from blackface. Context and meaning is key. The issue is that 99.9% of the time it's just blackface. The role of Lincoln Osiris was an example of that 0.1 percent.

@@Zerocyde The issue is it isn't the make up that should be considered offensive, it should be the negative portrayal of that ethnic group that should be. If do a blackface routine without the makeup, it would still be offensive. If you did a serious role grounded in respect and love with the makeup, it shouldn't be. But most people can't think that nuanced.

It means a piece of work that doesn't get the credit the person speaking about it thinks it deserves and is usually not acclaimed on the whole by the mainstream. Tropic of Thunder gets cited by every meat head pundit alive it is rated more than enough. Infact I'd call it overrated if anything.

There is no other race that Black people can be turned into and portray on the screen that would be considered believable by the audience. When my wife, and I first watched Tropic Thunder. She went to do something in the kitchen. Warming up pizza, or what ever. She ended up missing the fake opening credits, and a few other scenes. She came in during the scene where Stiller got his hands blown off, and he couldn't cry. As the movie went on she got more, and more pissed. She only wanted to watch the movie to see RDJ. She kept saying "When the hell is RDJ gonna show up?" After like the 5th time of her saying this I told her "RDJ has been in almost ever scene so far" She didn't know he was the black guy until he did the I'm a dude playing a dude disguised as another dude. And then he broke the mirror, fell on the floor, and took his wig off. Her face! That was the funniest thing every.

RDJ and Cruise each had two of the best performances of their lives. The kid who was the opium lord also did an equally great job. I think that helps put RDJ, when you have an amazing talent, many of whom put in some of their finest performances it's not a movie being carried by RDJ's blackface performance, that's simply one aspect of it.

Robert NEVER played a black man, he’s never said anything racist, he’s never come against black people! The reason why the black community never came for him, is because we understand the freakin plot of the movie! I’ve watched Tropic Thunder so many times and it’s one of my top 3 favorite movies from Robert Downey Jr. You can NEVER make me hate him!

The arc of his character was realising how ignorant and arrogant he was and apologising at the end. Problem is today it would be called out before people give it a chance and actually finding the meaning in it.

But professionally that role earned mad respect from me, cause he didn't half ass it. He went all the way in it. And I know for damn sure a couple uncles he reminded me of. Yes and the fact that his character who stepped way over the line in Tropic Thunder realistically and appropriately got major called out from his furious black co star in the film they were making that he deserved helped too. The filmmakers said the intention of that confrontation was to openly address and gave voice to that anger and criticism so it left none to be given by anyone else .Then there was also that characters emotional breakdown later that added a depth to and sympathy for the character . The role was a comedic satire on overly serious method actors and not a racist statement which was made clear. This distinction made all the difference of why RDJ got raves and not blowback for that role .

I will watch whatever character rdj play.

He did blackface correctly. He showed how utterly ridiculous it is and it was beautiful

This is the comeback of the year, and he’s a standup guy. He is an alumni of the same rehab I completed from 2 years ago. He bought all 130 new beds (temperpedic) and bought 6 new transport vehicles for the place. He worked hard to turn his story around, and he always gives back.

Jack Black's character, thinking noone knew of his addiction problem, when it was so obvious to everyone... but to himself, was pretty funny too!

Rdj is very respectful on how he actually plays these roles and I really like his movies

Not EVERYBODY. There are people to fill every personality type possible- and the Hate RDJ section is represented in these comments. The Hate for Ironman was a little surprising to me- but shouldn't have been, for the reason stated above. I agree, Roberts comeback was such a surprise. Rather interesting that a movie he made before his legal trouble- Restoration- foreshadowed what would happen in his own career.
