James Robinson: Institutions, development economics and modernization theory

James Robinson is the University Professor and institute director of The Pearson Institute for the Study and Resolution of Global Conflicts at the University of Chicago.
We talked about "Why Nations Fail", the current state of development economics, why economists started writing books, modernization theory, coauthorship with Daron Acemoglu, why British universities are lagging behind American ones and whether Milton Friedman is overrated.

I really liked that Pr. J.Robinson was sincere about the criticism and limitations to his book. Unlike some academics, Professor James Robinson didn't push his argument as the only valid source of the truth. He acknowledged that the economic development in developing countries is a complicated process that requires a deep knowledge of the context and it is foolish to act blindly according to some hand ready-made textbook. Also, I am very pleased with how Begzod and his team are trying to generate useful content to Uzbek media. Such interviews help us to listen to other opinions, widen our horizon of knowledge and go beyond the mainstream Uzbek mass media and biased newsmaking. Keep up the good work, Begzod

It came to me as a huge surprise and, I should confess, a very pleasant one that an Uzbek scholar sat down to interview the co-author of what is regarded as the most well received scholarly piece of literature of our generation. Kudos for all the hard work you did! Nonetheless, I have some little friendly remarks concerning both the content of the interview and your peculiar manner of conducting it. Let's start with technicalities; as a person who is well familiar with Professor Robinson, I had no problems with diving into the conversation, whereas the general audience who were not clued in might have been alienated by such an abrupt start of the interview. What also seemed awkward is how oddly inimical your starting position was. I will ascribe that to the fact of you not being an interviewer by training, but you definitely should learn how to make your guest get used to their assigned role first. So if you had taken some more time talking on neutral topics, such as presenting Robinson to your audience, both aforementioned issues could have been avoided. What also put me off is how poorly timed your injections were. It spurs me to think that you say things just for the sake of coming across as a sufficiently educated interlocutor and not to bring something of a true value to the conversation. When it comes to the content, you did a decent job of laying out the critiques of the guest's scholarly perspectives by shedding an important light on the egregious parochialism of the institutional argument. Yet still, I was hoping that you would address the book's prediction of the upcoming economic collapse of China attributable to the lack of inclusive political institutions. It seems to me, Robinson himself has changed his outlook on China's future and now referring to meritocracy as the source of the Chinese economic miracle. Also, no justice was done to the issue of limitations incurred on the intellectual enterprise by the left-dominated higher education in the West. I actually have some solid reservations about your adherence to such ideological blindness, too. In fact, anyone being refined by an American educational system is prone to have that, so I'm not putting the blame on you but rather your educational background. Anyway, best of luck on your further scientific and journalistic endeavours!

Actually an interview was quite fascinating... What really impressed me a lot the fact that James Robinson has such an huge experience on third-world countries... He worked in Africa and he knows an real economic climate both in terms of economical theories and real-life experience.... Your questions were really diverse and it really created a scenario like you had to fight in different fronts... (Is Friedman overrated ? Yes ) Unfortunately , Ama not satisfied... * It is really complicated to know answers to the creation of good institutions with statistics, economic theories.. we have to look at the background and cultural and moral behaviour of society... And to my mind it would be better to made an interview with Yuliy Yusupov after this one cuz you asked alot about Institutions in that talk .... And the statement that free trade has a list of advantages was absolutely true but in Uzbekistan especially in car industry we are doing all to restrict free trade .... Paul Krugman's theory or Friedman's speeches about free trade should be taken into consideration.... in an effort to fight against monopoly... And the idea of meritocracy that's what we need in our everyday life...(both social and economic institutions) I really appreciate that he said maybe we have a "latent potential" .. I do believe in this statement... We've gotta learn live without "excuses"... Lee Kuan Yee said let us recognise that Singaporean are a champion grumbler .... Maybe now we became also like this ... Time to think and change the value system.. Just Keep it up . Mr Hoshimov... good luck...

Just an awesome interview with incredible professor. I actually didn`t read much about him but quite a lot about professor Achemoglu. I read just small part of the book, however I have eagerness to start from the scratch. As for interview, I liked the professor`s reaction to the questions first. The question about economists and antropologists was something new for me. In addition, it was very useful to compare the higher education in the UK and in the USA, which is my own favourite topic nowadays. Now I am awared of very important points of this matter. Professor`s answer to the question about Consulting seemed strange, as most economists are doing so nowadays. He is disagreeing with the mainstream, but with well explained reason. One more thing is that his opinion about the people who want to change something. Yes there are lots of them. I liked especially last part - short answer session, however we have different opinions about professor Friedman. Mr.Hoshimov good luck to you and the project.

A great discussion. This book - Why Nations Fail? (around 500 pages)- is on my reading lists. Dr. Robinson has probably given a great doctoral dissertation topic to Behzod: "Why is Uzbekistan poor and/or why is Uzbekistan making slow economic progress?" Look forward to future interviews by Behzod.

Before watching the interview I expected more discussions about equality in growth, the importance of property laws and some other key issues in the book. However, I liked the professor's opinion on free trade: not many people see the benefits of free trade in a way that economists actually do. In case of Uzbekistan, general knowledge of free and open trade is pretty low, including its benefits, such as free movement of capital and labour, attraction of more foreign investment, comparative advantage in production and so on. So maybe it's probably helpful to raise public awareness of benefits of free trade massively by all instruments, which may result in decrease in attempts towards monopoly, and even push the government to seek for beneficial free trade agreements with other countries

Great book by James Robinson - Why Nations Fail! I have an idea, which may have already tickled your minds, as well. The idea lies in teaching this book in our high schools or at least at Universities, to make students and people realize the truth about why nations fail whilst how others succeed..! This might somehow bring transparency for our country. Cause I think, most people have almost no clue about the problems and "tricky" situations happening in Uzbekistan. Anyway, Great talk! Good Luck Hoshimov Bro!)

Very informative and useful talk to understand the aspects of making a good institution. Indeed, a high literacy level and good infrastructure can be an explanation of making good institutions, since society will demand it. However, from my perspective, one of the main factors of building a good institution could be a good cabinet of ministers, because it directly impacts on policy-making and further government strategies. Even though the population is literate and will demand a good institution but if the cabinet ministers will not use its resources efficiently, it will definitely fail. It can be seen in North and South Korea's case, Mexico and the US and even Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan case. Uzbekistan had the highest literacy level in Central Asia and it had good infrastructure compared to other central Asian countries, however, at present Uzbekistan is not the country with highest GDP in Central Asia as predicted 30 years ago.

Ushbu ko'rsatuvga so'nggi vaqtlarda taklif etilayotgan mehmonlar asosan ingliz zabon bo'lganliklari sababli, uni omma (oddiy xalq) ko'rib tushunishda biroz qiyinchiliklarga duch kelmoqda. SUBTITL orqali qilingan tarjima esa o'ta noqulay. Sababi tomoshabin ushbu yozuvlarni o'qib, tushunib ketishga ulgurmaydi (ya'ni suhbatdosh tez gapiradi va shunga muvofiq yozuvlar ham tez tez aylanadi). A very informative discussion of development, modernization theories with one of my favorite economists of modern times. Behzod aka, I, almost in every intervew, see an eager interest of you in why Uzbekistan, despite having all the “basic” aspects of development like infrastructure, almost 100% schooling and etc., hasn’t been able to make the growth it could have. The same was asked from Professor Murtazashvili; I personally think the answer lays in the education of populace in what it takes for a sustained growth to happen. Plus, the open “at-times” countering to James Robinson’s ideas made the discussion even more on fire 🔥 I would like to end with a little question for you: Have some of your views of the views from Why Nations Fail changed after the talk with the co-author?

"ko`p sohalarda rivijlanish bor, bizni davlat iqtisodi yaxshi, reytinglari yaxshi, mana bizdanda battarlari bor, shu boriga shukur qilaylik" deydigan odamlar oramizda ko`p uchraydi. o`ylamaydiki hozir axvoli o`rtacha, yoki yomonroqdir, ammo kelajakda nima bo`ladi, balki bundanda yomon ahvolga tushar, balki iqtisodimiz rivojlanmay qolar, turli xil tashqi tasirlar, ichki tasirlar doirasida rivojlangan davlat bo`lishimizni balki pensiya yoshida kutib olarmiz, vaqti nomalum... shuning uchun hozir, yangicha emas kerakli dunyo qarashga ega bo`laylik, kerakli bilimni o`rganaylik, kerakli ma`lumotlar bilan boyiylik, shunchaki ma`lumotlarlardan chegaralanaylik, va bunday vaziyatni yaratishda siyosiy maydonda, yetarlicha kuch bo`lmasa, nur sochyotgangan yulduz topilmasa, faqat prezident topshirig`i bilan yurib, shaxsiy fikriga ega bo`lmaganlar, jamiyatda o`zgarish qilishga, odamlar fikrini, hayot tarzini, g`oyalarni o`zgartirishga qurbi yetmaganlar o`rniga, balki, maydonni iqtisodchilarga berish kerakdir, iqtisodiy manfaatlar bo`yicha biron tashkilot kerakdir... davlat chiqargan qonun kim uchun xizmat qilmoqda, kimni manfaati ko`proq bo`lyapti, kim ko`p zarar ko`rmoqda... zarar ko`rganlar uchun, aybdorlarga qanday choralar ko`riladi...
