James Brown stated walked up to the Apollo Theater and the crowd out side did not know him. He shouted out I am James Brown and these are the Famous Flames. I want to state James Brown said won his first amateur contest in 1948.

Two things: 1. James Brown never performed at the Apollo amateur night. 2. He did 20 minutes for this show and they only showed 3 minutes. A disgrace to the man who sold more tickets at the Apollo than anyone else.

This story is a lie, JB never did amateur night at the Apollo. JB first performed at the Apollo back in March of 1959 as an opening act for his labelmate at King records Little Willie John.
