James Acaster calls out Ricky Gervais on his jokes about the transgender community.
WINNER OF THE MOST OUTSTANDING SHOW AT MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL COMEDY FESTIVAL 2019
“There’s a rush you get when you watch a routine that has been burnished to gem-like perfection, every phrase and pause chiselled and grooved to maximise the surprise; I felt drunk on it after two hours of this set. Joke after joke operates on a plane to which standup seldom ascends.”
-The Guardian, A COMEDY GENIUS AT THE PEAK OF HIS POWERS
“James Acaster already has a reputation as a comedy craftsman, but here he has surpassed even his own superlative standards…the way Acaster constructs his story, the way he develops themes and teases out humorous strands, is true genius.”

Why does he mind trans jokes if other groups of people wish to be included? All trans people I know and love like jokes about the topic, do they not matter then? I don't really get James in this one to be honest. He goes up on stage, lectures the audience about what should be allowed and what is off-limits, all to protect a group of people that probably wants the opposite of what he's suggesting. @@valhalla_1129 no one likes to be the butt of a joke, that's why petlovers comment was funny, because it highlights the absurdity of that, and absurdity is a component of humor. There is a big difference between laughing with someone and laughing at someone. James I don't think is saying anything about what should or shouldn't be allowed, he's highlighting the absurdity of punching down at a group of people, and then using the "you don't like a challenge, don't see me" copout. Feeling included is very important as you said, it is even more so if you are part of a marginalized group, but the way you are included matters.
I find it really funny how certain comedians will whine about how, "You can't tell a joke nowadays! Everybody is so easily offended now!" and, like, half of their repertoire is just them going, "HEY, LOOK! QUEER PEOPLE! *LAUGH!!!"* I mean, if your comedy is _that_ dependent on making fun of gay and trans people, than either you need freshen up your material or you just aren't that funny.

He gave a fricking moral lecture at the end, haha. That isn't my idea of good comedy, I didn't laugh once during this entire thing. Maybe you Brits have a different sense of humor? Or would he be equivalent to a Hasan Minajh in the US, only appealing to hyper partisan leftists? And since he opened the can of worms, what the hell is he talking about "until everyone is equal"? Equal in what way? Because quite literally, that has never happened in the history of the human race and it will never happen in our future. This idea that we need to discriminate against some people because other people aren't "equal" is a juvenile way to look at the world. It is like a kid friendly dumbed down version of Marx, and Marx was already a bad source of information if you care about the truth or effective solutions. The progressive ideology developed after socialism fell in Russia and therefore the world. These new progressive ideologies are like all sequels, they are cheap knock offs of the original,. This is basically communism from the back door, trying to make sure everyone is "equal" through discrimination and force of law.

@@jacobmatthews7524Not talking about jokes, that's apparently something you're concerned with. I'm more referring to real life stuff, like jobs and justice system. For example, even in the most progressive countries we know, a simple anonymous poll showed that over 30% of those in charge of hiring think differently about someone when they're female, or if they have a non-native name, or if they have a different skin-color. All these people have equal rights by law, but obviously there's no true equality. You can't just flip a switch and say "welp, equality exists now". At that point at best you can hope to create true equality among the next generation that is being born. For the already existing generations, who grew up with the prejudice and bias, you need to nudge it in the right direction. You need to artificially compensate for it. To just pretend that equality exists because some laws got passed, and to pretend those biases suddenly no longer exists, that's disingenuous. You should know better.

Throwing a temper tantrum over people exhibiting prejudice, tribalism, or different opinions is just idiotic. People should be allowed to express themselves so long as no one gets physically hurt and no damage is done to property.

His blind contempt for the audience is one of the most outstanding comedic devices of the modern era. He literally tells the audience - to their face - as pointedly and unabashedly as possible, how much he absolutely hates them, and it gets the biggest laugh of the entire show. The work you have to put in to get to the point that delivering that line is an openly appreciated crescendo is astounding. He sprinkles in just enough moments of relatable insight into his lived experience as a comic - in particular he gets you to “root for the villain” with the Mr. Bean bit and the support hotline material - that you’re so sucked into his point of view that you can’t jump on board fast enough with absolutely hating comedy audiences, and by association and without realising it, yourself. A comedy duo I loved growing up in Sweden had a 20 year anniversary tv special where one guy went, “Of course it was better back in the day! Back then a woman was a woman and a man was a man, and now there’s a goddamn alternative! It just makes it (dating) so much harder…” That was it. That was the whole jab at transgender people. And it wasn’t even a jab! As a trans man this jokes still is funny in context, I grew up with outdated comedy and yet I still don’t like these conservatives who feel the need to explain themselves by complaining. Had that comedy duo done that this joke would have felt like it wasn’t a joke a crude remark. Jokes like Ricky’s weren’t funny because they were offensive, they weren’t funny because he made a point of taking people’s reaction seriously and get offended. I saw pieces of his jokes online and found them funny-ish, but then I got the context and realised they weren’t jokes but remarks that no one asked for.

@Capt Shiny Says the people who think white males are more oppressed than females when they say they are women. Acaster claims to be a comedian yet is lecturing other comedians on 'transphobia'.
Wait, 4:21, he reminds me a lot of the Team Fortress 2 engineer with that "Nope".
More please!

@The Stonefish Such a common argument but so flawed. Treat everyone equal in terms of respect, sure, but there's such thing as punching up and down and it's extremely prevalent in comedy. It's not fair or equal for someone to "make fun" of marginalised and vulnerable groups in the way they can make fun of majority groups. See, a joke about white straight people is usually punching up or at least ahead, but a joke about black gay people is usually punching down and contributes to decades of marginalisation and bigotry under the guise of harmless fun.

@@heythisanimalcantalk and who chooses what is marginalised or vulnerable? What do the words even mean? To even attempt to think a trans person is "marginalised" means you have no concept of anything, or what words mean. Which margin? Who nudged you there? Vulnerable to what? From whom? Basically, unless you start specifying what you mean, it's all just meaningless. We are individuals, not groups. A CIS white man, for example, who has been maginalised and made vulnerable by pro-trans hiring practices and massively supported schemes and funds is not better off because of his "membership" of the CIS white man group. In fact he is treated unjustly because of it, even though these are inherrent properties he is born with. Social justice IS individual injustice. Individual injustice is always wrong.

@@miff227 Miff I'm sorry but you are talking gibberish. No one has "decided" who is vulnerable. Society has slowly (and not necessarily always deliberately) marginalised groups of people. Certain groups have been in power and certain groups have been made vulnerable by those groups in power. This is how society works. If you don't know what those words mean ("marginalised" and "vulnerable") I can explain them to you.
